'Name and shame' plans for community sentences in England and Wales ditched

Labour's plan to name and shame offenders ordered to complete unpaid community work in England and Wales has been scrapped just weeks after being announced. The policy change comes as Keir Starmer faces growing criticism from his own backbenchers over a string of high-profile policy reversals that have deepened unpopularity.

Under the now-abandoned plan, individuals convicted of minor crimes would have had their details and community work publicly displayed on government websites and promoted through local media. However, after concerns were raised about the potential impact on the families of offenders – particularly children – – the Ministry of Justice has accepted an amendment to the sentencing bill that will remove the right to publish offenders' names and photographs.

The plans were met with opposition from senior figures within probation services, including HM chief inspector of probation Martin Jones, who warned that publishing offenders' images could lead to more people dropping out of community work. Napo, the probation officers' union, also expressed concerns about the policy's potential effects on innocent family members.

The decision has been welcomed by some, but others have expressed frustration over Labour's handling of policy changes. The prisons minister, James Timpson, said that the current delivery of unpaid work would be sufficient to achieve its intended goals without the need for the proposed measure.

I'm not entirely surprised by this U-turn 🤔. While I think publicly shaming offenders is a decent deterrent, I can see how it might disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, like children 👧🏻👦🏻. It's essential to consider the ripple effects of policy changes, especially when they involve sensitive topics. The removal of publishing offenders' names and photos is a pragmatic move, but one that might be seen as watering down an otherwise well-intentioned initiative 💧. I'm curious to see how this decision will impact Keir Starmer's approval ratings – it's clear his party needs to navigate these policy reversals more carefully 📈.

man i feel bad for keir starmer 🤔, he's just trying to help society and whatnot but his own ppl are hating on him lol. like, yeah it makes sense to keep the family of offenders out of this situation, can't have kids getting bullied or stigmatized because their parents did something wrong, you feel? 😊 anyway, i guess scrapping the policy is a good move, who knows if it would've actually worked and just created more drama 🤷‍♀️. at least now we know that james timpson thinks the current system is doing enough, let's keep an eye on how things play out 👀

🤔 I'm kinda disappointed about this, think it's a shame they had to scrap the plan. I get where they were trying to hold people accountable, but I also see why families might be worried about their loved ones' details being out there. 🙅‍♂️ The idea of community service was supposed to help people turn their lives around, not cause more stress for those around them. 💔 Removing the names and photos will make it less punitive, which I can get on board with. But at the same time, it's a bit gutting that they had to pull it back after just weeks. 🤷‍♂️ I guess it's a reminder that even good intentions need to be carefully thought through and adjusted as needed. 👍

OMG, THIS IS SO FUNNY!!! 🤣 I KNEW IT WAS A BAD IDEA FROM THE GET GO! WHO PAYS ATTENTION TO WHAT LABOUR'S DOING ANYWAY? 🙄 THEY'RE JUST TRYING TO WIN VOTES AT THIS POINT. BUT SERIOUSLY, NAMING AND SHAMING OFFENDERS IS NOT THE ANSWER. IT'S LIKE THEY THINK IT'LL BE SOME KIND OF PSYCHOLOGICAL TIP-OUT FOR CRIMINALS TO REALIZE THEIR MISTAKES. NEWSFLASH: IT WON'T WORK. 🤦‍♀️ I MEAN, WHO DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO HIDE THEIR FACE ON THE INTERNET ANYWAY? 😂 AND WHAT ABOUT ALL THE INNOCENT PEOPLE WHO WOULD BE AFFECTED BY THIS Policy?! 🙅‍♂️ GOOD JOB, LABOUR, YOU'VE MANAGED TO MAKE YOURSELVES LOOK EVEN MORE OUT OF TOUCH. 👎

Aww, this is a really tough one 😔... I can imagine how hard it must be for people who've been sentenced to community service, especially when there's a chance they might get their names and pics out in the media 📰... Like, what if you're trying to get back on your feet after making a mistake, but everyone's staring at you? That can't be easy 😓. And it's not just the offenders themselves who are affected – think about how worried the kids could be when they see their parents' faces online 🤯... It's like, we want people to take responsibility for their actions, but do we have to shame them in front of everyone? I don't know, man... I just feel bad for everyone involved 💔.

just heard about this news 🤔 and i gotta say, naming and shaming people doesn't really solve anything 🚫. it's like, yeah maybe it deters some people from committing crimes, but what about the actual rehabilitation? shouldn't we be focusing on helping those who make mistakes get back on their feet instead of just publicly embarrassing them 😔? and also, what about the impact on families and loved ones who don't even do anything wrong 🤷‍♀️? i think this policy change is a good step in the right direction 👍

🤕 just heard about this policy change and i gotta say, it's a bit disappointing 🤔 labor had big plans to shame people doing community service but now they're backing down 👀 what's next? are they gonna scrap the whole unpaid work thing too? 💸 the gov needs to find better ways to hold people accountable than just making 'em do more community service 🙄

ugh i cant even believe this just happened 🤯 like whats going on keir starmer i thought you were better than this 😔 so your plan to name and shame people who are just trying to pay their dues wasnt good enough but now its too much for everyone else 💔 what about the ppl who need a chance to turn their lives around? all because of some backbenchers whining 🙄 and now we have to deal with the fallout...it just feels like labours not listening to anyone anymore 🤷‍♀️

this is a big u-turn from labour... i think they just got caught out by their own backbenchers and now they're backing down 😐. it's understandable why they changed their mind, though - I mean, who wants to see their relatives' names out there? that could have been really harsh on the families of offenders 🤔.

I'm not sure what labour was thinking with this plan in the first place... it seemed like a pretty blunt instrument 📊. and yeah, it's definitely good that they're taking into account the concerns of people who work in probation services 🙏. but at the same time, I feel like labour is losing some credibility on this one 💔.

anyway, what do you think about this u-turn? should labour have stuck with their guns or was it a pragmatic move? 🤷‍♂️

I'm kinda lost on this whole thing 🤔. It seems like no matter what the government does, it's always gonna be a losing battle when it comes to public opinion. They're trying to shame people into doing community work, but really they're just making it harder for offenders to reintegrate into society 👎. And now they've chickened out and scrapped the plan altogether 🙅‍♂️. It's like they're saying "oh well, maybe we can try again another time" 🕰️. But what does that even mean? Are we just gonna keep switching back and forth until we figure it out? That feels like a waste of resources to me 💸. And I wonder, is the real goal here just to make people look bad instead of actually fixing the problem? 🔍

omg I'm like totally disappointed in this decision 🤕! naming and shaming people is already so harsh, why do we need to make it even worse? 🤝 community service should be a way to give back not a public embarrassment 😔. I get that there were concerns about families but didn't think the solution was just to remove names & pics 🙅‍♀️. hope they find another way to deal with low turnout in community work 👍

😊 omg i'm so sad to hear this 🤕 can u imagine how stressful it must b 4 a family whose member is doing community work already? they dont need more drama in their lives 🙅‍♀️ at least james timpson says the current delivery of unpaid work is enough which makes me feel better 😊 i guess its all about finding solutions that work 💡 what do u think tho? should we have more transparency or not? 🤔

OMG, like, can't believe Labour scrapped their plan to name and shame offenders 🙄👀. I mean, it's a good thing they did, though - those poor families' feelings gotta be considered 💔. But now that it's been abandoned, people are all like "what's going on with Labour's policies?" 😂. Senior probation officers were totally right to sound the alarm about publishing offenders' pics 📸. It's not just about the offenders themselves, but their loved ones too ❤️. And honestly, who needs a public shaming campaign anyway? Just stick to making sure people serve their community time and move on 💪. I guess James Timpson is right, though - maybe it wasn't needed after all 🤷‍♂️.

I'm not sure what's more concerning - the fact that they scrapped this policy in the first place or how it was even announced 🤔. I mean, can't you just tell someone they're required to do community service without drawing all that drama out? And now we know it wasn't even a well-thought-out plan... I don't get why Labour couldn't work with their own backbenchers and probation services to make this thing work better in the first place 🤷‍♀️.

Like, super surprising they scrapped it just weeks after announcing 🤦‍♀️. I mean, who needs publicity stunts when you're trying to rehabilitate people, right? It's all about accountability... said no one ever 😒. Anyway, glad they changed their minds on this one. Poor little offenders and their families didn't stand a chance of being shamed in public 🤷‍♂️. I guess that's what happens when the plans were just too much for even Labour to handle 🙅‍♀️.

I've seen a lot of policy changes in my day and I gotta say, this one seems like a good decision 🤔. I mean, what's the point of shaming people for doing community service when it's supposed to help them turn their lives around? I get why the government wanted to make an example out of people who break the law, but this approach just seemed too harsh 🚫.

I'm glad they changed their minds and decided not to publish offenders' names and pics. I can imagine how tough that would be on innocent family members 🤕. It's always better to take a step back and think about the consequences of our actions before we act.

ugh i dont get why they had to scrap it in the first place 🤔. i was kinda interested in seeing how it'd affect people's behavior like would it really make them think twice about committing crimes? and what's with all these policy changes happening right now 🤯 its like labours trying out different ideas without thinking it through 🙄. and can we talk about the loophole where they removed the name and photo but not the community work itself 💁‍♀️ i mean whats the point of doing unpaid work if you cant even take a selfie to post on instagram 😂

I gotta say, this whole thing just feels like a massive waste of time & resources 🤦‍♂️. Like, I get it, Labour wanted to shake things up, but naming & shaming people in public? That's just a recipe for drama & unnecessary stress for the families involved 🙅‍♂️. And on top of that, they scrap it after like 2 weeks because some backbenchers are giving them grief? Boo hoo, can't even get policy changes right without causing a ruckus 😒.

And honestly, what's next? Are we gonna make all policy changes public too? "Hey, look at me, I changed the law... again!" 🙄 It just feels like Labour is having some major identity crisis mode. Can't they just stick to what works instead of trying to reinvent the wheel every five seconds 🚗.

omg what just happened lol i was all about this naming and shaming thing but now it's out the window 🙅‍♀️ i mean can u imagine having ur name and pic on a website just cuz u did some community work that u couldn't afford ? like, isn't that just extra stress for innocent ppl? 🤯

i was wondering if this policy change would've actually worked tho... would ppl have done more community work or just stopped doing it altogether? 🤔 and what about the families of offenders who were worried about their pics being out there? did they feel safer now that the plan's been scrapped? 🤗

i think james timpson makes a good point tho, maybe the current system is enough... but i'm still curious about how it all went down 🤔 was it just a case of too much pressure from backbenchers or what? 😂
