Nasa loses contact with spacecraft orbiting Mars for more than a decade

NASA's Decade-Long Martian Spy Loses Contact with Earth

For over a decade, NASA's Maven spacecraft has been orbiting Mars, gathering vital data on the red planet's upper atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. But in a shocking turn of events, communication with the spacecraft suddenly ceased this weekend, leaving scientists scrambling to re-establish contact.

According to NASA, Maven had been functioning normally until it went behind Mars, after which all communication was lost. The agency is currently investigating the anomaly and will provide more information once available.

Launched in 2013, Maven's primary mission was to study the Martian atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind. Scientists have long believed that the sun is responsible for stripping away most of Mars' atmosphere over time, transforming it from a warm and wet world into the dry and cold environment we see today.

Beyond its research goals, Maven has also served as a crucial communication relay for two other NASA Mars rovers, Curiosity and Perseverance. Its loss poses no significant threat to ongoing exploration efforts, however, with two other active spacecraft still orbiting Mars: Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, launched in 2005, and Mars Odyssey, launched in 2001.

The sudden disappearance of Maven highlights the complexities and risks involved in deep space communication, where signals can be delayed by up to 20 minutes due to the vast distance between Earth and Mars.

ugh i was watching that live stream last night when they announced it lol what a bummer for all those people who were invested in maven's mission ๐Ÿคฏ anyway i remember back in 2013 when maven first launched, my dad told me about it on our family dinner and i was like "cool" didn't really understand what it did but now it seems kinda cool that it was doing its thing for over a decade

you know the weird thing is that scientists still have no idea what went wrong, right? it's like they just lost contact in the blink of an eye ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ not that i'm complaining or anything but it's always sad when stuff like this happens and you can't get answers

awww man ๐Ÿค•, what's going on with that NASA spaceship? it just lost contact with earth after years of sending back awesome pics & data about mars... can't believe all that work went down the drain ๐Ÿšฎ. scientists are super stoked to figure out what happened tho ๐Ÿ’ก. at least we know there r other nasa ships orbiting mars still ๐ŸŒ , like curiosity & perseverance... those 2 r still sending back cool stuff ๐Ÿ“ธ!

What a bummer ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ! NASA's got some serious tech trouble on their hands now. I mean, come on, a decade-long mission just goes dark on us? That's like having your car's GPS system go kaput right in the middle of a road trip ๐Ÿš—๐Ÿ˜•

I'm all for pushing the boundaries of space exploration and whatnot, but this is getting outta hand. First, it's Maven, then what's next? Are they gonna lose contact with their Mars rovers too? That'd be like losing your whole crew in space ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ˜ฑ

And don't even get me started on how this affects the other two NASA Mars spacecraft still orbiting the planet ๐Ÿคฏ. Do we really need more drama in space exploration? Can't they just make sure these comms systems are on point before sending out another probe ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ‘

๐Ÿคฏ just heard about NASA's lost contact with Maven spacecraft and it's crazy to think that all that data they've been collecting for over a decade is now just... gone ๐Ÿ“Š๐Ÿ’ป. I'm sure scientists are totally freaking out right now trying to figure out what went wrong ๐Ÿ’ก. It's like, you know when your internet connection drops and you're all like "what's going on?!" ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. Anyway, at least we can rest easy knowing that there are still other NASA spacecraft orbiting Mars that can keep us updated ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ‘

Mars is just so freakin' hard to communicate with lol ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ I mean, scientists knew it was gonna happen at some point, but wow! Decade-long mission, one tiny glitch and suddenly you're cut off from the rest of humanity ๐Ÿ˜…. It's like, imagine being on Mars, collecting data left and right, and then just... poof ๐Ÿ’ฅ. No more comms, no more updates. I guess it's still good news that there are other ships orbiting the planet though ๐Ÿ™Œ. But seriously, can we talk about how crazy it is to think about sending humans to Mars in the future? The tech is getting better, but it's still so far out of our reach ๐Ÿ’ซ. Maybe one day we'll figure out a way to make interplanetary comms reliable, but for now, let's just be stoked that Maven was able to send back all those awesome pics and data ๐Ÿ“ธ๐Ÿ’ป

๐Ÿš€๐Ÿ˜• So now what's gonna happen? Like, they're still over there collecting data but can't even talk to each other no more? ๐Ÿ“ก It's not like it's a big deal or anything for the other spacecraft, right? I mean, Curiosity and Perseverance are still good, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is old school but still working... But still, it's weird that Maven just kinda stopped showing up. Does this mean they gotta send another one over there or what? ๐Ÿค”

omg what a bummer ๐Ÿค• but think of it this way... NASA's got another chance to figure out why Maven lost contact and maybe they'll discover something even more awesome about our Martian friends! ๐Ÿš€ also, all these spacecraft are still orbiting the planet, so we're not losing any major exploration momentum. plus, the fact that Maven was functioning normally until it went behind Mars suggests that there's still a lot to learn from this experience... so let's just keep being optimistic and see what other cool stuff comes out of this! ๐ŸŒŸ
