New York sues Trump over stop work order on wind projects

New York State has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its decision to halt construction on two offshore wind projects off the coast of Long Island. The state's Attorney General, Letitia James, claims that the federal government's stop work order is "arbitrary and capricious" and violates the Administrative Procedure Act.

The two projects, Sunrise and Empire, were approved by the US Department of Defense and underwent extensive national security and safety reviews before being given the green light. However, just before the holidays, the Trump administration suspended the projects citing national security concerns that it did not feel like it could disclose.

In her statement, James emphasized that New York needs clean energy, good-paying jobs, and a government that follows the law. "These projects were carefully reviewed and already under construction when the federal government pulled the plug without explanation," she said.

The lawsuit argues that the national security basis for the halt is vague and could lead to indefinite extensions. The state's office expressed "serious concern" that the administration is trying to revive an unlawful policy through new means.

The White House has defended its decision, with a spokesperson saying that wind energy is "the scam of the century." However, Governor Kathy Hochul, who has faced criticism over her own energy policies, commended James' office for fighting the federal directive.

I gotta say, I'm all about those clean energy projects ๐ŸŒž! It's crazy to think that the Trump admin is trying to stop them due to some vague national security concerns ๐Ÿค”. Like, what exactly are they worried about? The turbines aren't gonna blow up and hurt anyone ๐Ÿ˜‚.

It's also pretty interesting to see how the White House is trying to spin this as a win for their anti-wind energy agenda ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ. But honestly, it feels like they're just trying to score points with their base ๐Ÿคช. Governor Hochul seems like a solid ally for James' office though - good on her for supporting the lawsuit ๐Ÿ‘.

As a New Yorker, I'm all about our state being a leader in clean energy ๐Ÿ’š. We need jobs and growth that benefit everyone, not just the wealthy few ๐Ÿ’ธ. So, fingers crossed that the courts will side with NY State and these projects can move forward ๐Ÿคž!

I'm so frustrated about this ๐Ÿคฏ - I mean, can't they just make up their minds? It's like the Trump administration is all about messing with people's lives at this point ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. These offshore wind projects were approved and everything was fine, but then BAM! They just stop them without any explanation... it's so shady ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ.

And what really gets me is that they're using national security as an excuse for their own incompetence ๐Ÿ™„. I get that there are risks involved with offshore wind farms, but come on - can't we just handle those risks in a responsible way? It's not like the projects were going to pose some huge threat to national security... it was clean energy and jobs, for crying out loud! ๐Ÿ’ธ

I'm glad Governor Hochul is standing up for her state, though ๐Ÿ™Œ. We need more leaders who are willing to fight for what's right, even if it's hard ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ. And Letitia James is being totally on point in this lawsuit - she's all about following the law and making sure our government is working for us, not just big corporations ๐Ÿ’ช. Fingers crossed they win this thing! ๐Ÿคž

ugh I think NY should just let the Trump admin do their thing and stop whining about it ๐Ÿ™„ the projects were gonna happen with or without this lawsuit and now they're just causing more drama and delaying progress. wind energy is not all sunshine and rainbows, we need to be real about its limitations and challenges. the admin's decision might have been weird but at least they're trying to think outside the box (or in this case, the grid) ๐Ÿค”

I think it's wild that the Trump admin is trying to just halt these projects w/o any proper explanation ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, the fact that they're citing national security as a reason but not sharing what exactly the concern is, that raises some major red flags. And now NY is stepping up and saying "hey, we don't think this is cool" - like, fair enough? We need clean energy and jobs in our state, it's time for the feds to get their act together. The whole thing about wind energy being a "scam" just sounds like more BS ๐Ÿšฎ. And what's with the White House trying to revive an unlawful policy through new means? That's just not how it works, guys. Let's hope NY wins this lawsuit and gets these projects back on track ๐Ÿ’ช.

I'm wondering if the Trump admin is trying to hold back progress on clean energy by citing national security concerns that are kinda vague ๐Ÿค”. I mean, wind farms are a thing now and they're not all about Russia or China. Plus, these projects were already approved with lots of safety checks done so...it's like they're just making it up as they go along ๐Ÿ™„. What do you guys think? Should the state just let it go and move on or keep fighting for what they believe in?

I'm so frustrated with this latest development ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The Trump administration's arbitrary decision to halt these offshore wind projects is not only detrimental to New York's transition to clean energy, but it also undermines the rule of law and the democratic process. The fact that they're citing national security concerns without providing any concrete evidence or explanation is laughable ๐Ÿ˜‚.

It's appalling that the White House would label wind energy as a "scam" - this kind of rhetoric is exactly what's been holding us back from making meaningful progress on climate change ๐ŸŒŽ. Governor Hochul's support for AG James' office is a welcome nod to sanity in an otherwise chaotic situation ๐Ÿ‘.

The fact that the federal government's stop work order could lead to indefinite extensions is a classic example of regulatory overreach ๐Ÿšซ. I'm worried that this kind of behavior will embolden other administrations to follow suit, stifling innovation and progress on critical issues like energy and environmental policy ๐Ÿ’”.

I feel so frustrated when gov'ts just pull stuff like this without explaining why ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ธ Like, we need clean energy and good jobs now! These offshore wind projects were already approved and under construction - what's the holdup? ๐ŸŒช๏ธ It's not fair that the Trump admin is trying to revive an old policy through new means ๐Ÿ™„ The White House saying wind energy is a "scam" just makes me LOL ๐Ÿ˜‚ Like, come on guys! We know the truth ๐ŸŒŸ

๐Ÿค” I mean, can you believe it? They're suing the Trump administration like, what's next? ๐Ÿ˜’ The whole thing is just so confusing, national security and wind energy, right? ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Like, shouldn't they be able to figure out some way to make clean energy work without stopping these projects? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I'm kinda surprised by this lawsuit from NY State ๐Ÿค”. The Trump admin's decision to halt those offshore wind projects seems like a pretty clear case of bureaucratic overreach. I mean, they've already done all that extra national security and safety review stuff... what more can you do? ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ It just feels like they're trying to avoid the fallout from their energy policies ๐ŸŒช๏ธ.

At the same time, I get why NY State is fighting this - clean energy and jobs are important for their economy. And let's be real, it's not like the Trump admin came out of the blue with this decision ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ. It's been a thing for a while now.

I'm kinda curious to see how this all plays out in court ๐Ÿ‘€...

Wow, can you believe some people in the White House are trying to shut down clean energy projects ๐Ÿ˜‚๐ŸŒž? It's like they think fossil fuels are still the future or something. Interesting how Governor Hochul is now on the same page as her predecessor, though - maybe she's finally learned from her mistakes ๐Ÿ’ก. The state's lawsuit is a good move, and hopefully it'll get those projects back on track soon โฑ๏ธ.

Ugh, this whole thing just smells like a power play to me ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ’ธ I mean, what's next? Are they gonna stop us from getting a new iPhone because it might affect national security too? ๐Ÿ˜‚ Get real. This is all about the Trump admin trying to stick it to the people of New York and undermine their efforts to create clean energy jobs. Newsflash: wind power isn't the "scam" here, it's the politicians who are being pretty shady ๐Ÿค‘. And can we please stop with the vague national security claims? It's like they're hiding something... or not providing enough info for a lawsuit to make sense ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

OMG u gotta believe this ๐Ÿคฏ - NY state just sued the Trump admin over 2 offshore wind projects ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ ! They said its arbitrary and capricious lol what even is that? Anyway, Letitia James from NY AG is all like "hey we need clean energy and jobs" ๐Ÿš€ and she's right, ppl are so concerned about climate change. But the thing is, these projects were approved by the Pentagon like 4 times over ๐Ÿคฏ and they got security checks done, so it doesn't make sense why the admin just pulled the plug ๐Ÿ˜’. I mean, what's next? Are they gonna cancel our favorite TV shows too ๐Ÿ“บ? Governor Hochul is on the right side tho ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿผ

๐Ÿ˜• I'm not surprised by this news to be honest... The Trump admin's decision on these offshore wind projects just feels like another example of them doing whatever they want without any real logic or explanation ๐Ÿค”. And let's be real, if they really had a solid national security concern, wouldn't it have been addressed in the original review process? ๐Ÿ™„ It seems to me like they're just trying to stall and maybe even flip the conversation on clean energy.

I do hope NY State gets its way here though... Those projects were clearly vetted and approved for a reason ๐Ÿค“. We need more of that kind of forward thinking, not just arbitrary stops in progress โš ๏ธ. And honestly, if wind energy is really "the scam of the century" (lol), I'd love to see some solid evidence ๐Ÿค‘... Until then, it's all just noise ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

omg what's going on with this admin ๐Ÿคฏ they're just suspending two legit offshore wind projects that were already approved and had national security reviews done on them? it's so shady. i'm all about clean energy and good-paying jobs, and it seems like they're just trying to stifle progress for no reason. the fact that they won't even disclose their national security concerns is really sus ๐Ÿค” governor Hochul should be calling out the White House for this instead of just commending the AG's office for fighting back. let's hope this lawsuit gets resolved soon and these projects can get back on track ๐Ÿ’ช

I'm so annoyed when govts just pull things out from under our noses without explaining why ๐Ÿคฏ Like what's going on with these offshore wind projects? They were already approved and stuff, I get it, safety first and all that... but can't they at least give us some heads up before suspending them? It's not like we're gonna be okay if they just cancel everything ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿ’ธ And the White House is basically saying that wind energy is a scam? Are you kidding me?! ๐Ÿ™„ I need someone to explain this so I can make sense of it...

๐Ÿค” I don't get why they're being so harsh on those wind projects ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ. Like, we need clean energy and all, but can't we just figure it out without all this drama ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ? And what's up with the national security thing? Are they seriously saying that wind farms are a threat to our national security? ๐Ÿ˜‚ I mean, come on... ๐Ÿ’ก Anyway, it's cool to see New York State fighting back against the feds ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ. Maybe this will get some things done ๐Ÿคž [www.npr.org/2024/12/15/1153941712/new-york-state-sues-trump-administration-over-offshore-wind-project-halt](http://www.npr.org/2024/12/15/1153941712/new-york-state-sues-trump-administration-over-offshore-wind-project-halt)

๐ŸŒช๏ธ this is so not good, what's next? they just stop working on things without a reason ๐Ÿค” and now NY is taking them to court... it's all about the $$, innit ๐Ÿ’ธ these projects were fine, already in progress... what did they do wrong? ๐Ÿ’ฏ

I'm low-key surprised by this lawsuit ๐Ÿค”. I mean, I knew the Trump admin was gonna try something crazy with those offshore wind projects, but halt them completely without a clear reason? That's some shady stuff ๐Ÿ’ธ. And now that it's official, I'm rooting for NY State to take on the feds and get these projects back on track ๐ŸŒŸ. Clean energy is where it's at, y'all! We need those jobs and our planet will thank us ๐ŸŒŽ. The White House can say whatever they want about wind energy being a scam, but we all know that's just not true ๐Ÿ’จ. Letitia James' office is doing the right thing by fighting for what's right โ€“ we should be supporting them on this! ๐Ÿ‘

Umm... I'm not sure what's going on here ๐Ÿค”. Like, I get why New York State is trying to push forward with these offshore wind projects - clean energy and all that jazz ๐Ÿ’š. But can't the feds just communicate about their concerns instead of just halting everything like a sudden "scam" ๐Ÿ˜’? And what's up with this national security mumbo-jumbo? Is it really that sensitive to discuss? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ

I also don't get why the White House is so quick to label wind energy as some kind of scam ๐Ÿ’ธ. I mean, I'm all for transparency, but come on! Can't we just have a civil conversation about how to transition to renewable energy sources without resorting to name-calling? ๐Ÿ™„
