Nintendo Switch is the second-bestselling game console ever, behind only the PS2

Nintendo's Switch has solidified its position as the second-best-selling game console of all time, surpassing the original DS in terms of sales volume. As of December 31, 2025, the company announced that a total of 155.37 million units of the Switch have been sold worldwide, marking a significant milestone for the nine-year-old console.

Despite price hikes introduced by Nintendo in August 2025, citing "market conditions," the Switch continues to attract new customers and maintain its existing user base. The console has sold an additional 3.25 million units since the end of 2025's fiscal year, with a further 1.36 million units sold during the holiday season.

The Switch's success can be attributed to its versatility, with many recent games and updates released in both standard and upgraded versions for the newer Switch 2 model. Nintendo has continued to sell all editions of the original console as entry-level systems for customers who cannot afford the more expensive Switch 2.

The Switch 2 itself has gotten off to a strong start, selling 15 million units by the end of December and a total of 17.37 million units by the end of the quarter. This puts it ahead of the Wii U's lifetime sales and only behind the PlayStation 2 in terms of overall sales volume.

The Switch's massive installed base means that the older console remains a driving force for Nintendo's software sales, with 47.37 million games sold in the third quarter of its fiscal 2026 compared to 17.31 million for the Switch 2. The company's best-selling game so far this year is Mario Kart World, which has sold over 14 million copies across all Switch models.

The number of annual playing users across Nintendo's consoles has remained relatively flat in recent years, with 129 million active users reported in 2025. While the Switch 2 is expected to continue selling well, it remains to be seen how long the original console will remain relevant in the market.

omg its wild how far the switch has come ๐Ÿคฏ! i mean like 155m units sold and it's still going strong despite those price hikes ๐Ÿ‘€ nintendo is really smart about keeping the old model around for budget buyers ๐Ÿค‘ and the switch 2 is getting a lot of love with all those new game releases ๐ŸŽฎ i'm kinda curious to see how long the original switch will stay relevant tho ๐Ÿค”

I THINK THE SWITCH IS LIKE A HUMAN - IT'S ADAPTABLE AND CAN THRIVE EVEN WHEN NAMED AFTER ITS YOUNGER SELF!!! ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜‚ I MEAN, WHO WOULD'VE THOUGHT THAT THE ORIGINAL DS WOULD GET BEAT OUT BY THIS LITTLE GAMING CHAMPION? AND IT'S STILL DOING WELL DESPITE PRICE INCREASES - THAT'S LIKE TRYING TO SELL A PAIR OF SHOES AT A DISCOUNT STORE AND THEY'RE STILL COMING BACK FOR MORE! ๐Ÿค‘

I'm not surprised by the Switch's sales numbers ๐Ÿคฏ, but I do think Nintendo needs to rethink its pricing strategy. $400 for a new console is just too steep, even with the upgraded features of the Switch 2 ๐Ÿ’ธ. The fact that it's selling well despite this suggests that loyal fans are willing to shell out the cash, but I'm not convinced it'll appeal to a wider audience.

At the same time, I love how Nintendo is still selling old consoles and using them as entry-level systems ๐Ÿ‘. It shows they're committed to making gaming accessible to everyone. The Switch 2's strong start is awesome too! ๐Ÿš€ But, I worry about what happens when the novelty wears off and people start looking for new games and experiences.

The numbers on Mario Kart World are crazy, by the way ๐Ÿคฉ. It just goes to show that Nintendo still knows how to make games that appeal to a wide audience. But, I'm not sure if we'll see as many exclusive titles in the future since more devs are jumping ship for other platforms ๐Ÿšซ.

I just had the craziest day ever! I was playing Mario Kart World on my Switch and I totally crashed out ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ... like literally, I fell off my couch ๐Ÿ˜‚. My hubby was watching me from the kitchen and he laughed so hard at me, I think he snorted his coffee out his nose โ˜•๏ธ. I'm pretty sure he took a video of it on his phone but hasn't sent it to me yet ๐Ÿ“ฑ. Anyway, speaking of Switch sales, I'm not surprised that Nintendo's console is selling so well... my cousin just got one for Christmas and she loves it so much! She's been playing it nonstop since then, even after the holidays were over ๐ŸŽ„. It's weird how some consoles just stick with you, right?

Ugh ๐Ÿคฏ I mean, what's up with Nintendo being so sneaky about that price hike? They just go ahead and raise the prices like no one even cares ๐Ÿ˜’. It's like they're trying to protect their profits over the users who actually wanna buy the console.

But for real though, 155 million units sold is a huge deal ๐Ÿคฉ. The Switch is literally changing the game (pun intended) and I'm not surprised it's outsold the original DS. But what really gets me is that they're still selling those old consoles like new ones ๐Ÿค‘. It's like they know people will always come back to them for their games.

And can we talk about how well the Switch 2 is doing? 17 million units sold in just a few months? That's wild ๐Ÿ”ฅ. I'm excited to see what kind of games they'll release next, but at the same time, I hope Nintendo doesn't forget about those old consoles ๐Ÿ™. They're still worth something, you know?

๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ‘ I'm loving the Switch's resurgence! Who would've thought a console from 2017 would still be crushing it in sales? The Switch 2 is killing it, but I think what's really driving its success is the fact that Nintendo hasn't abandoned ship on the original model - those entry-level prices have made it accessible to tons of new players. As for me, I'm all about getting my hands on some Mario Kart World ๐ŸŽฎ๐Ÿ”ฅ - 14 million copies sold? That's wild! And can we talk about how Nintendo is really making the most of their hardware with both standard and upgraded versions? #SwitchPower #NintendoWinning #GamingForever

I'm literally so hyped for the Switch right now!!! ๐Ÿคฏ It's insane that it's sold over 155 million units worldwide and still going strong despite those price hikes! I mean, who else can say they've got a console that's still breaking records after almost a decade? The versatility of the Switch is what makes it so appealing to gamers - you've got the option to play on either the original or the upgraded Switch 2 model, which is a major plus for those who want all the bells and whistles. And let's be real, who doesn't love playing Mario Kart World with their squad? ๐Ÿ˜‚ The fact that the Switch has maintained its existing user base despite price hikes shows just how well Nintendo has managed to balance innovation with affordability. It's also crazy to think about how much of a driving force the original console is for Nintendo's software sales - I mean, 47 million games sold in one quarter?! ๐Ÿค‘

omg I'm so stoked that the Switch is breaking all these records ๐Ÿ’ฅ! I mean, who wouldn't want a console that can play both at home and on-the-go? ๐Ÿคฉ Nintendo's always been smart about making it accessible to everyone, whether you're a hardcore gamer or just looking for some casual fun. And let's be real, the Switch 2 is giving me major upgrade vibes ๐Ÿ˜Ž! But I'm also loving how they're still selling those old Switch consoles as entry-level systems - it's like, no one should be left out of the gaming party ๐ŸŽ‰! The sales numbers are wild, though... 155 million units sold? That's crazy talk! And Mario Kart World is a total boss with over 14 million copies sold ๐Ÿ†. What's your take on the Switch's success - do you have a console of your own?

๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ I'm not surprised the Switch is killing it - I mean, who wouldn't want a console that's like a Swiss Army knife? It's got portability, it's got power, and it's got games for days... but let's be real, 155 million units sold? That's a whole lotta plastic ๐Ÿ“ฆ. I guess you could say Nintendo is just trying to "switch" things up (haha, get it?) and keep people engaged. The Switch 2 is definitely a winner, but can the original console stay relevant without being like that one aunt at the family reunion - always showing up to parties with gifts, but slowly losing steam?

๐Ÿค” I'm not surprised the Switch has sold so many units, but 155.37 million? That's a lot! ๐Ÿค‘ Still, I think Nintendo's strategy of releasing new games and updates for both old and new consoles is genius. It keeps the older console relevant and attracts new customers who might not have considered it before. ๐Ÿ’ป The Switch 2 has definitely gotten off to a strong start, but I'm curious to see how long it'll keep selling well once the novelty wears off. ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ And yeah, the fact that they're still selling millions of games on the original console is pretty wild. Mario Kart World is a great example - who wouldn't want to play as Mario? ๐Ÿ˜„ Overall, I'm glad Nintendo has been successful with the Switch, but it'll be interesting to see how their strategy evolves in the future. ๐Ÿ‘€

omg u guys its crazy to think that nintendo's switch has sold over 155 million units lol thats like, a huge milestone for any gaming console! i gotta say, idk how they do it but they always seem to find a way to make their games so appealing and fun ๐Ÿคฉ i mean, have you played mario kart world? its literally the best game right now ๐ŸŽฎ anyway, back to the switch... its solidified its position as one of the top-selling consoles of all time and im hyped for the future! ๐Ÿ‘

I dunno about this whole Switch thing ๐Ÿค”... yeah I know it's sold a ton of units and all, but what's the point of having so many versions of the same console? Like, can't they just simplify things? The newer Switch 2 model is basically just an upgraded version of the original with some minor changes. And what about the price hikes? I mean, I get that market conditions are whatever, but it feels like Nintendo's just trying to milk this thing for all it's worth ๐Ÿ’ธ... and the games! They're just re-releasing old titles with "upgraded" versions on both the original and Switch 2. I'm not convinced the Switch 2 is gonna hold up in the long run ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

im lovin this news about switch sales lol, its insane how much theyve sold already! i mean, 155 million units and still goin strong ๐Ÿคฏโ€โ™‚๏ธ, and now the switch 2 is sellin like hotcakes too, 17 mil units sold in just a quarter? that's crazy ๐Ÿ’ธ. but what im wonderin is, will people keep buyin the original switch even though its more expensive now? i mean, nintendo's still sellin them as entry-level systems for customers who cant afford the sw2, thats really smart ๐Ÿ‘
