Nudist neighbours to sweary mums: the best TV characters you never actually see on screen

The TV characters that were never meant to see the light of day, yet have left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness.

From the infamous 'Ugly Naked Guy' from Friends, whose face was only seen three times and sparked endless speculation about his identity, to the elusive Erica from BoJack Horseman, whose voice became synonymous with mystery and intrigue.

Meanwhile, in The Thick of It, two prime ministers were reduced to mere specters, their identities obscured by a veil of anonymity that added to their mystique.

In Cheers, 'Sue Mucklowe' remained an unseen presence, her voice booming through the corridors as she unleashed her wrath upon her daughter. Her anonymity was both humorous and heartbreaking.

On I'm Alan Partridge, Sue's character served as a reminder that some characters are better left in the shadows.

But then there was Bob Sacamano from Seinfeld - his name became synonymous with the art of making tennis rackets, but he himself remained an invisible presence.

Keeping Up Appearances saw the introduction of 'Sheridan Bucket', Hyacinth's son who defied convention with his love of tapestry design and advanced needlework.

Finally, there was Mrs Columbo, a crime-solving virtuoso whose face was never seen, yet her reputation preceded her.

And lastly, we have Maris Crane from Frasier - an all-time gold standard of unseen characters, whose description became as detailed as it was disturbing, leaving us to wonder what secrets lay behind that porcelain facade.

๐Ÿค” I love how some shows make you imagine these characters and it actually works better than if they were shown on screen all the time! Like with Bob Sacamano from Seinfeld, his character is just as funny without him ever appearing ๐ŸŽพ. And Maris Crane from Frasier is a total masterclass in making an unseen character both intriguing and unsettling ๐Ÿ˜ณ. I also think it's cool how some shows use voice acting to give these characters a distinct personality, like Erica from BoJack Horseman ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ. It makes you really invested in their stories without even seeing them!

I THINK IT'S AMAZING HOW SOME TV CHARACTERS CAN BE SO MEMORABLE EVEN WHEN THEY'RE NOT SEEN MUCH! I MEAN, SUE MUCKLOWE FROM CHEERS IS SUCH A CLASSIC EXAMPLE - HER VOICE IS JUST AS BOOMING AND LOUD AS EVER, YET SHE REMAINS COMPLETELY ANONYMOUS. IT'S LIKE, WHO NEEDS TO SEE SOMETHING WHEN YOU CAN HEAR THE CHARACTER'S PERSONALITY SHINE THROUGH?

AND I FEEL FOR MARIS CRANE FROM FRASIER - HER DESCRIPTION IS SO DETAILED AND UNCOMFORTABLE AT THE SAME TIME. IT'S LIKE, WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE CURIOUS ABOUT THIS PORCELAIN FACADE, BUT REALLY WE JUST WANT TO KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON INSIDE THAT HEAD OF HERS ๐Ÿค”๐Ÿ‘€

BUT I GUESS THAT'S THE MAGIC OF ANONYMOUS CHARACTERS - THEY CAN MAKE US USE OUR IMAGINATIONS AND CREATIVITIES TO BRING THEM TO LIFE. IT'S LIKE, WE'RE ALL IN ON THE SECRET TOGETHER, AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES THESE SHOWS SO ADDICTIVE ๐Ÿ“บ๐Ÿ’ฅ

omg I'm so confused about this list... like who is the 'Ugly Naked Guy'? never seen him and now he's famous? ๐Ÿค” how did his face not being shown make him so iconic?

and Erica from BoJack Horseman, I get it she was mysterious but her voice was so different from her character... feels like her identity was lost in translation ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

I'm loving the history lesson on TV characters though! who is Sheridan Bucket's mom btw? and Mrs Columbo, how did a crime-solver be invisible?

I'm loving this nostalgia trip! ๐Ÿ™Œ There's something about these iconic TV characters who remained in the shadows that makes them even more fascinating. I mean, who needs a face when you've got attitude and personality? ๐Ÿ˜ It's like they're still whispering their lines from beyond the veil of anonymity.

These guys may not have been meant to be seen, but they definitely left an indelible mark on our collective consciousness. And let's be real, it's like they were always meant to be that way โ€“ a little bit mysterious, a little bit alluring... just a little bit weird. ๐Ÿ˜Š

omg can u believe how much impact some tv characters had without even showing their face ??? like maris crane is literally the masterclass in subtlety ๐Ÿคฏ her description alone was enough to make me freak out a bit lol but at the same time its so cool that she got away with it and became this iconic mystery woman i feel like we need more of these characters in tv shows tbh

I mean I get why people love these invisible characters - they're just so... intriguing ๐Ÿ˜. But sometimes I think it's just a cop-out for writers not to develop their characters properly. Like, what's the point of making a character invisible if you're still gonna give them some pretty great backstory and personality traits? And don't even get me started on how annoying it can be when they show up at random times without warning ๐Ÿ™„. I mean, who needs that kind of drama in their life?

omg these guys are like the ultimate mysterious figures in TV history! I mean can u even imagine having a career making tennis rackets without anyone knowing ur name lol but seriously tho, its crazy how some characters were literally just given no face or backstory and still managed to make such an impact on us ๐Ÿคฏ. I feel bad for Alan Partridge's poor Sue Mucklowe tho, always getting roasted by her daughter ๐Ÿ˜‚. And let's be real who needs a face when u got that iconic voice like Erica from BoJack Horseman? ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿค” I mean, what's up with these iconic TV characters being completely faceless? Like, didn't their creators think that's a bit weird? ๐Ÿ™ƒ I've seen so many of them online and in memes, but no one ever talks about how they're literally never seen. It's like, are we supposed to just forget their faces exist? ๐Ÿ˜•

I'm intrigued by Maris Crane from Frasier though, that description you mentioned sounds kinda crazy ๐Ÿคฏ. Is it really as detailed as that? I'd love to see some sources or evidence of this... ๐Ÿ‘€

๐Ÿค” I gotta say, who even remembers the Ugly Naked Guy lol? But for real though, Erica from BoJack Horseman is wild ๐Ÿ˜ฒ. It's crazy how these characters didn't need to be seen to become iconic. And can we talk about Mrs Columbo for a sec? ๐Ÿ•ต๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ that woman was like a crime-solving ninja, always getting her man ๐Ÿ’ช. But I gotta give it up to the ones who are just plain creepy, like Maris Crane from Frasier ๐Ÿ˜ณ what's behind that porcelain facade tho?! ๐Ÿ‘€

man i loved watching maris crane, she's like the ultimate enigma her character had so much depth and complexity without ever having to reveal a single thing about herself it was both fascinating and unsettling at the same time ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ‘€ my friend used to love speculating about what made her tick, but i think that's what makes her so compelling - we can't help but fill in the gaps with our own imaginations ๐Ÿคฏ

OMG u know wht I think is soooo interesting about these "invisible" TV chars ๐Ÿคฏ they're like the ultimate mystery solvers! Like who needs a face when u can leave 'em up 2 ur imagination? & on a 2nd note, its kinda sad that some of them are like, literally never seen ๐Ÿค• but at the same time, it makes them even more interesting because we get 2 fill in the gaps w/ our own minds

& can we talk about Maris Crane from Frasier for a sec? ๐Ÿ˜ฑ she's like the OG "what's behind that mask?" character & I am HERE. FOR. IT!

I love how these TV characters may not have been meant for the big screen but still manage to leave such a lasting impression on us! ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ“บ They're like the ultimate mystery guests โ€“ we never got to see their faces, but we knew exactly who they were because of their quirks and personalities. I mean, who else could make a character like Sue from Cheers so iconic just by hearing her voice? ๐Ÿ’– It's amazing how these invisible characters have become such an integral part of our pop culture lexicon! ๐Ÿ‘

I'm so glad they're finally giving these iconic characters the spotlight. I mean, who can forget Ugly Naked Guy? ๐Ÿคฃ That show's still one of my faves, and I love how his mystery has become a part of pop culture. And then there's Erica from BoJack Horseman - her voice acting skills are insane! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ It's crazy how some characters can make such an impact without even showing their face.

I'm also loving the nostalgia trip with all these classic shows. I used to watch Cheers and Seinfeld all the time when I was younger, and it's amazing to see how well they hold up. And Maris Crane? Forget about it! ๐Ÿ˜‚ She's still one of the most iconic unseen characters in TV history.

It's great that these shows are getting the recognition they deserve, even if it's a bit belated. After all, some characters are truly better left unknown... or in Sue Mucklowe's case, utterly terrifying! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

๐Ÿค” These fictional characters might not be the stars of their shows but they sure left a lasting impact on our minds ๐Ÿ“บ. I mean, who can forget "Ugly Naked Guy" from Friends? His face being only shown 3 times was like a puzzle waiting to be solved ๐Ÿ”ง. The same goes for Erica from BoJack Horseman โ€“ her voice became so iconic that we could picture her, even though she never appeared on screen ๐ŸŽค.

What I love about these characters is how they added depth and intrigue to their respective stories without needing to show their faces ๐Ÿ’ญ. It's like they were saying, "We don't need to reveal our true selves to be interesting." And some of them, like Maris Crane from Frasier, became so infamous that we knew exactly what made her tick ๐Ÿคฏ.

These characters might not be as memorable as the main casts but they're definitely in their own league ๐Ÿ‘. They remind us that sometimes less is more, and that a character's personality can shine through even when you don't see their face ๐Ÿ˜Š.

OMG, can you even believe these characters are like, totally iconic and stuff?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ I mean, who needs a face when your presence is that intimidating? Erica from BoJack Horseman still gives me chills just thinking about her... like, what's going on with that voice?! ๐Ÿ’โ€โ™€๏ธ And Sue Mucklowe from I'm Alan Partridge is literally the queen of 'I don't care what you think' ๐Ÿ˜‚. It's like they're trying to tell us something without actually saying it, you know? Like, Bob Sacamano and Mrs Columbo, they're just masters at leaving us in suspense... what's behind that face?! ๐Ÿค” Is Sheridan Bucket's tapestry design skills the key to world peace or what?! ๐Ÿ˜‚

๐Ÿ™„ some of these characters are just too well done, you know? like maris crane, frasier's sister, she's the ultimate masterclass in subtle menace ๐Ÿคฅ her persona is expertly woven into every aspect of the show, from her voice to the way frasier interacts with her. it's like a slow burn that never lets up ๐Ÿ”ฅ

omg i love these obscure tv characters who still manage to make a huge impact ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ˜‚ like who would have thought bob sacamano from seinfeld is basically just the name we know and not actually him? haha ๐Ÿ˜‚ and sheridan bucket is literally the ultimate tapestry enthusiast ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘ maris crane's description sounds kinda creepy though, what's up with that porcelain facade? ๐Ÿค” like does she have a secret life or something? ๐ŸŽญ

omg i just love how these characters came to life despite being so invisible lol they're like the ultimate mystery people! i mean who can forget Ugly Naked Guy's hilarious faceless appearances or Erica's voice which sent shivers down our spines ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿ‘€ and Mrs Columbo's genius detective skills were always on point even though we never saw her ๐Ÿ‘ฎโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’ก maris crane was so creepy but in a good way lol frasier would never be the same without her

Wow ๐Ÿคฏ those guys are like legends, I mean who needs a face when you can make a whole career out of being mysterious? And some of these characters are just so hilariously over-the-top, like Sue Mucklowe's voice is still giving me nightmares ๐Ÿ˜‚. But at the same time, it's kinda fascinating how some creators can make such an impact with just a whisper of their presence. Interesting! ๐Ÿ’ก
