Shooting in Queens Home Leaves Man Injured, Police Say Actions Were Necessary
A dramatic confrontation unfolded in the early morning hours Monday at a home in Queens when officers responded to a 911 call about a man throwing glass inside. What began as an altercation over family business turned deadly when police fired on a knife-wielding suspect who had allegedly advanced towards them with a large kitchen blade.
According to Assistant Chief Christopher McIntosh of Queens Borough South command, the suspect was identified as a 22-year-old male with a history of mental illness. Family members had reached out to authorities for help, and officers were initially let into the home by the family member. However, upon encountering the suspect in the kitchen, he retrieved his knife and began moving towards them.
Despite attempts to de-escalate the situation through repeated commands, the man refused to drop his knife, prompting officers to retreat from the area. The suspect then pushed past a barricade set up at the living room door, continuing his aggressive approach with the blade.
Police say one officer ultimately fired several shots, hitting the suspect in the body. He was rushed to Jamaica Hospital and is currently listed as stable following surgery. A kitchen knife was recovered on the scene, and footage of the incident has been recorded by the officers' body-worn cameras.
An investigation into the events has begun with the NYPD's Force Investigation Division. As details continue to emerge, officials emphasized their commitment to transparency in sharing information about the incident with the public.
