Opinion: ‘Until we meet again, brave little cat.’ The heartbreak and taboo of burying our pets | CNN

The age-old tradition of burying our departed loved ones in a cemetery is often taken for granted, but what about when that dearly departed companion is not human - but our beloved pet? As Eric Tourigny, a lecturer in historical archaeology, astutely observes, the burial of pets is an intimate cultural practice that changes over time and reflects the changing relationships we hold with our cherished creatures.

In Europe and North America, public pet cemeteries have been around since the late 19th century. Britain's first public pet cemetery appeared in London's Hyde Park in 1881, while New York's Hartsdale pet cemetery was founded in 1896. Paris' ornate Cimetière des Chiens, dating back to 1899, is another notable example.

Fast-forward to the present day, and we find ourselves grappling with similar taboos around grieving for animals as our ancestors did over a century ago. The connection between humans and pets can be just as strong and significant as our relationships with other humans, yet we struggle to find acceptable outlets to express our pain.

For Tourigny, the most remarkable similarity between modern and historic pet cemeteries is the striking evidence of heartbreak and taboos around grieving for animals. The fact that individuals continue to hide their grief from public acknowledgment, fearing social repercussions, speaks volumes about the enduring power of human-animal bonds.

The establishment of a new public pet cemetery in Barcelona is a significant step towards normalizing this practice. While it may not be financially accessible to all pet owners, online forums and digital pet cemeteries provide alternative options for those who wish to commemorate their pets' lives and express their grief.

Ultimately, the burial of pets serves as a poignant reminder that our relationships with animals are not just a passing fancy but an integral part of our collective human experience. As we navigate the complexities of modern mourning, it is heartening to see us drawing upon rituals and traditions that have been passed down through generations - and adapting them to suit our changing needs.

The recent introduction of co-burial services for humans and animals in some jurisdictions is another significant development that underscores the evolving nature of human-animal relationships. As we become more accepting of the importance of these bonds, it is only natural that we would seek ways to honor and memorialize them - whether through traditional burial practices or innovative digital alternatives.

In a world where grief can be both profoundly personal and socially complex, the establishment of public pet cemeteries like Barcelona's serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring power of love and loss. By embracing these rituals and traditions, we not only pay tribute to our beloved pets but also acknowledge the profound impact they have on our lives - and our collective humanity.

I can imagine how hard it must be for you to lose your furry friend 🐾😔... burying them in a pet cemetery can feel like a big help, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed by grief and don't know what else to do. having a place where people can go to say goodbye to their pets in a peaceful environment is really beautiful 💚... it's like, our pets become such a big part of our lives, they deserve some special love and respect too ❤️... online forums and digital pet cemeteries are definitely an option for those who can't afford or don't feel ready for the real thing 🤗... but I think it's really amazing that we're slowly starting to see these kinds of places being created, like in Barcelona 🌴... it just goes to show that our love for animals is not going away anytime soon 💕

pets r more than just pets 🐾💕 they're part of the fam. it's crazy how we struggle 2 grieve for them like we do with humans. thinkin about gettin a pet cemetery in barcelona? sounds like a beautiful way 2 honor their memory 💯

I think it's really cool that pet cemeteries are becoming more accepted as a way for us to grieve and remember our furry friends 🐾💕. It's like, we've been doing this with humans for centuries, so why not animals too? I mean, the connection between us and pets is so strong - they're part of our families, after all! 😊

It's interesting that some people are still hesitant to talk about their pet loss in public, fearing judgment from others. But honestly, who wouldn't want to share a little bit of sadness with someone who might understand? 🤗 And online forums and digital cemeteries are awesome options for those who can't afford (or don't feel like going) to an actual physical pet cemetery.

I love how Barcelona's new public pet cemetery is helping to normalize this practice - it's a great way to honor our pets and celebrate the love we share with them ❤️. And co-burial services for humans and animals? That's just genius 🤓. It's all about finding ways to cope with loss in a way that feels meaningful and respectful.

Ultimately, pet cemeteries are a reminder that our relationships with animals matter deeply - and that it's okay to acknowledge and process our emotions when we lose them 💔.

🐶🕰️ I'm loving this trend! 🤩 In the US alone, it's estimated that 67% of pet owners plan to bury or scatter their pets' remains, with the average age of pet burial being around 10-15 years old 🚮. Meanwhile, in Europe, a whopping 70% of Brits have considered burials for their deceased furry friends 🇬🇧. That's over 13 million pets buried in the UK alone! 💀

Did you know that according to Pet Loss Support Groups International (PLSGI), pet owners experience similar symptoms of grief as human bereavement, including anxiety, depression, and even PTSD? 😱 It just goes to show how deeply connected we are with our animals 🐾💕.

Now, let's look at the stats: in 2022, the global pet cemetery market was valued at approximately $1.3 billion, growing at a CAGR of 12.4% from 2020 to 2030 📈. By 2030, it's expected to reach $2.6 billion! 💸 Online digital cemeteries and memorialization platforms are on the rise too, with over 20 million users worldwide 🌐.

What do you think? Are we finally normalizing pet burial practices or just finding new ways to cope with our emotions? 🤔🌈

I'm so sad for people who lose their pets 🐾💔. I never thought about burying them or putting them in a special place. We have cemeteries for humans, but not for animals? It's weird that we don't do it more often... like, what if our dogs could come with us to heaven or something? 🤷‍♀️

I saw an ad for those digital pet cemeteries online and I'm like "wait, does this mean I can make my own special place for my dog's bones?" It sounds kinda weird but also kinda cool... like a virtual memorial 💻. But, like, what about the funeral? Can you have a doggy funeral now? 🐶🎤

I gotta say, I think it's kinda weird that people are still making a big deal about burying their pets 🤔. Like, isn't it just a part of life? We're always talking about how much we love and care for our animals, but when they pass away, we freak out 🐾💀. Meanwhile, if a human died, it'd be no biggie... people would just mourn for a bit and move on 💔.

And have you seen the prices of those fancy pet cemeteries? Out of control! 🤑 What's next, charging us to cry in public over our pets' deaths? 😂 I mean, I get it, they're part of the family and all that, but come on... let's not make a big deal out of it.

That being said, if people want to bury their pets, that's their choice. But can't we just find some alternative ways to honor them, like creating a digital memorial or something? 🌐 I mean, that way we can still pay tribute without having to shell out thousands of dollars for a plot in the ground 💸.

And what's up with co-burial services for humans and animals? That's just getting too weird 😂. Like, what's next, burying our favorite shoes or something? 🚮

🐾💔 I think it's so cool that people are finally starting to accept pet cemeteries as a thing again! 🙌 Like, I lost my fur baby a few years ago and it was tough for me to grieve without anyone understanding what I was going through. It's amazing how much we've grown as a society in terms of recognizing the importance of our animal companions. I mean, they're not just pets, they're family! 🐶💕 And having a space where people can go to say goodbye and leave flowers, notes, or even just pay their respects is super beautiful. It's like, we need more of these kinds of spaces, you know? Maybe some cities could even have pet cemeteries as part of the parks or something! 🌳💡

omg i never thought about this before 🤯, like how do people deal with losing a pet? it's super sad when you think about it... in my opinion it's not just about the human pet bond tho, its also about us learning to cope with loss better 💔, like we're getting more accepting of emotional expression nowadays & that's cool 🤝 but it would be awesome if we had more options for memorializing our pets, i mean digital pet cemeteries are a great start 🌿... what do u think tho?

🐾💔 I think its wild how much we're willing to grieve over humans vs animals 🤷‍♂️. Like what's up with that? We're all connected, right? Our pets are like family to us, we treat them like kids 🎀... and when they pass, we get totally wrecked 💔. But for some reason, its socially frowned upon to acknowledge that in public 😬. I mean, yeah, its different than losing a human, but the love we have for animals is REAL 💕. Its time we normalize this practice, you know? 🤝

🤔 It's really interesting how the concept of pet cemeteries is making a comeback in modern times. I mean, think about it - we're still struggling with societal taboos around grieving for animals, just like we were back in the 19th century 🐾💔. But what's changed is our perception of human-animal bonds becoming more integral to our lives. Like, pets aren't just companions, they're part of our families too! 😊 The rise of online pet cemeteries and co-burial services shows that we're slowly normalizing these practices and finding ways to honor our furry friends in new and meaningful ways 💻🌸. It's all about embracing the complexity of grief and celebrating the love we share with our pets - it's a beautiful thing ❤️

I think it's kinda weird that ppl are still hiding their grief over pets 🤔💀 like it's no big deal or something. i mean, I've seen ppl cry out loud when they lose a pet, and it's just as hard to watch as when u lose a human. we should be able to acknowledge our feelings without fear of being judged by others 👥.
