Phillies stay or go: A look at the bullpen

Phillies Bullpen Puzzle: Which Arms Make the Cut?

The Philadelphia Phillies' 2025 bullpen was a paradox - two sides, vastly different in performance and reliability. The early-season unit was a disaster, with signings like Jordan Romano proving to be regrettable decisions, while the late-season team shone bright with trade deadline acquisition Jhoan Duran leading the charge.

Despite being mediocre overall, with a 4.27 ERA (21st) but top-10 strikeout rates, the bullpen's innings pitched total was remarkably low, thanks to the incredible starting pitching that carried the team throughout the season. As we head into 2026, several key arms will be returning, while others will be deciding their fates.

The returning bunch includes Jhoan Duran, who'll remain under contract until 2028; Orion Kerkering, who'll reprise his role as a late-innings righty; Tanner Banks, the lefty specialist with options still intact; Matt Strahm, another lefty reliever set to return in 2026; and Max Lazar, whose minor league options give him flexibility. The big question marks are two relievers: JosΓ© Alvarado and David Robertson.

Alvarado, a complex case due to his steroid suspension and subsequent performance issues, had a promising start before letting the team down. Despite this, Phillies President Dave Dombrowski has indicated that Alvarado's return is still possible, but it's hard to justify paying him considering the abundance of young talent on hand.

Robertson, meanwhile, returned to Philadelphia mid-season but failed to impress. With his age and performance falling short of expectations, he'll likely be a free agent, making his future with the Phillies increasingly uncertain.

On the other end of the spectrum are arms like Seth Johnson, Tim Mayza, Lou Trivino, and Jordan Romano and Joe Ross, who were highly touted but ultimately failed to impress. Daniel Robert, Michael Mercado, and Nolan Hoffman will likely be back in 2026 as well, with all four under team control.

As the Phillies navigate their bullpen puzzle, it's clear that some arms will need to step up or face an uncertain future. Will they find a way to solidify their rotation, or will the pressure mount on those returning from 2025? Only time will tell.

I'm thinking that the Phillies' bullpen is like a big puzzle with some pieces missing πŸ€”. They've got some great guys coming back, but others are like, what's the deal with them? I mean, Alvarado has some baggage and Robertson just didn't live up to expectations. And then you've got these guys who were supposed to be superstars but ended up being meh. It's like they're trying to build a new team from scratch, but they're using old parts πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ. The only good thing is Duran and Kerkering are gonna be solid, so I guess that's something 😊. Maybe they can find some hidden gems in the minors or make some smart trades? That'd be cool πŸ‘

πŸ€” man I'm not holding my breath for this bullpen though... they got some legit guys comin in but also some question marks that I don't think are gonna pan out. like Alvarado, he's had his chance and still can't get it together... and Robertson's old, what's the point? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ we'll just be stuck with a bunch of mediocrity again next season...

Wow 😊. The Phillies' bullpen conundrum is crazy, right? I mean, you've got all these talented arms who were touted as game-changers, but they just didn't deliver. And now they're wondering if guys like Alvarado and Robertson are even worth the investment. It's like, you want to give them chances, but at what cost? The team has so much young talent, it's hard to justify keeping these veterans around. But hey, maybe they'll surprise us again πŸ€”.

ugh i dont get why baseball teams cant just pay people more lol and make it easier for themselves? like romano was basically terrible but we're still trying to figure out if he's worth keeping. and david robertson is old so yeah id say hes done πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

πŸ€” I'm like, totally stoked for Jhoan Duran's return πŸŽ‰, he was a total game-changer in the 2nd half and his contract until '28 is, like, a huge plus πŸ™Œ. But at the same time, I don't know if it's worth paying him considering all the other talented young guys we've got on hand πŸ’Έ. Like, what's the point of keeping someone who had major issues last year when you could be giving someone else a shot? πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

And then there's Robertson πŸ™…β€β™‚οΈ, I mean, he was decent at first but it just fell off a cliff mid-season and I'm not sure what the team is even thinking keeping him around πŸ’”. It feels like they're gonna be letting him walk in free agency and that would be, like, totally justified πŸ€‘.

But honestly, I think our starting pitching is gonna carry us through next year and we won't need to rely on our bullpen as much ⚾️. Like, let's be real, the guys who were total busts last year are probably gonna make way for some new faces in '26 πŸ”₯.

Ugh, I'm so done with the Phillies' bullpen situation 🀯. It's like they're playing a game of musical chairs, but instead of chairs, it's arms and pitchers. They gotta figure out who's reliable and who's not, and fast. I mean, Jordan Romano is still out there? What was thinking signing him to that contract? And don't even get me started on Alvarado, he's got some serious baggage 🚫. I'm not sure if the Phillies can trust him enough to make it worth paying him. And Robertson... yeah, his age is starting to show ⏰. It's gonna be a long offseason for them figuring out who's in and who's out πŸ’”.

I'm so over these bullpen puzzles πŸ™„. Can't teams just figure out who's gonna work and who's not? I mean, it sounds like they've got a good core coming back but then you gotta question the guys who didn't make it through. I get it, we all have ups and downs in our careers, but 2 years is kinda long to be benching a guy just 'cause of some early season struggles πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. What's the point of having options if they're not gonna get utilized?

I'm so done with Jordan Romano πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ. I mean, who thought it was a good idea to sign him in the first place? And now he's basically irrelevant because of his poor performance. I get that injuries and stuff happen, but come on! The Phillies have some amazing young talent coming back like Duran and Kerkering... they should be the focus πŸ€”. And can't we just cut loose Robertson already? πŸ˜‚ He was always a bit of a wild card. The whole bullpen is kinda stressful, especially with those decision-making days approaching πŸ•°οΈ. Guess only time (and Spring Training) will tell what's gonna happen next 🀞.

I'm still salty about how Romano did it to us last season πŸ€•... I mean, who thought signing Jordan Romano would be a good idea in the first place? The guy was a disaster. And now they're even thinking about bringing him back? πŸ˜’ It's like they want to repeat the same mistake. At least Duran and Kerkering are decent, but can we trust anyone else? I'm not holding my breath for Robertson or Alvarado to come back and impress. They gotta do a lot better than that...

OMG I'm so hyped for the Phillies' bullpen situation next year 🀩! The fact that they're bringing back Jhoan Duran and Orion Kerkering is a total win πŸ’―, but also kinda scary because what's going on with Alvarado? 😳 I mean, I get it, everyone has ups and downs, but the suspension was super shady. Still, Dave Dombrowski seems to think he can come back around, so fingers crossed for him! 🀞 As for Robertson, idk man... he just didn't impress in Philly last year πŸ€”. Guess we'll have to wait and see if they can turn things around or if he's a done deal 🚫.

I'm thinkin' the Phillies should give Jhoan Duran all the credit he deserves for his amazing performance in the late season πŸ™Œ. That dude was like a different pitcher altogether! He really showed what he's made of. I hope they can keep him under contract and get more guys like that on board, 'cause it looks like the rest of the bullpen is gonna be all over the place 😬. Can't say much for the signing of Jordan Romano tho... was that a huge mistake? πŸ€”

I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened in Philly last season 🀯 their bullpen was like a seesaw, one day it's lights out the next it's shutout πŸ˜‚ and I'm curious to see how they'll shake things up in 2026. They've got some legit options coming back like Duran and Kerkering but I'm still skeptical about Alvarado πŸ€” he's got too much history with the team to be a certain thing. And can't even blame Robertson for being done, he's had his shot at it. On the other hand, guys like Johnson and Romano were supposed to be the answer and they just didn't pan out πŸ’” hope the young blood brings some stability to that pen 🀞

I'm telling you, this is exactly what we're seeing with our education system - too much emphasis on individual stars (like Jhoan Duran) and not enough focus on building a strong foundation (starting pitching). I mean, think about it, if they had invested more in their starters, would Jordan Romano's contract be a regrettable decision? πŸ€” It's like, we need to think about the big picture here, not just patching up our bullpen with last-minute fixes. And let's be real, the guys who struggled (like Robertson) are gonna be a free agent and it's gonna be tough for them to find another team willing to take a chance on them. Meanwhile, the young talent is just sitting there waiting to step up...or get stuck in limbo like Alvarado 🚫

I'm skeptical about JosΓ© Alvarado's return to the Phillies' bullpen πŸ€”. His history of performance issues and suspension raises significant red flags 🚨. While it's great that the team is willing to give him another chance, I think the investment might not be justified πŸ’Έ. The young talent in the organization is looking for opportunities to shine, and paying Alvarado might divert resources away from more promising arms πŸ”΄.

On the other hand, I'm curious to see how Max Lazar will fit into the bullpen πŸ€”. His minor league options give him flexibility, which could be a great asset as the team navigates its pitching puzzle 🌐. It's also interesting that the Phillies are bringing back several arms from 2025, including Orion Kerkering and Tanner Banks πŸ’ͺ. Will they be able to replicate their performance from last season?

I'm still trying to figure out what happened with Jordan Romano πŸ€”... I mean, I get it, he's not our ace and we signed him to a decent contract thinking he'd be the answer, but it just didn't pan out. Anyway, I do love that Jhoan Duran turned things around for us - the guy was on fire towards the end of the season πŸ”₯! And it's cool that some guys are getting another shot next year, like Orion Kerkering and Tanner Banks... those guys were always good in relief roles. What's got me worried is JosΓ© Alvarado πŸ€•... I know he had a rough season, but what happened to his game? And with Robertson being a free agent now, that's just not ideal... we need some consistency on the backend of our bullpen!

I don't usually comment but I gotta say, I'm kinda surprised they're bringing back Matt Strahm πŸ€”... I mean, he's had some decent seasons in the past, and his stats aren't terrible 😐... But at the same time, the team has got some young guns brewing like Jhoan Duran and JosΓ© Alvarado... it's like they're stuck between a rock and a hard place πŸ’₯... And what's up with Robertson? I don't get why Dombrowski is even considering paying him πŸ€‘... Maybe they just feel bad for the guy? πŸ€—

so like the phillies had this crazy bullpen situation last season right? two units that were super different and one was like totally crushing it while the other was like complete trash πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... i mean, jhoan duran is a beast though 🐯 and it's cool that he's sticking around for 2028. but like, jose alvarado? unsure about him man πŸ€”... he had some good starts before tanking and i feel like the phillies need to be realistic here. david robertson was just meh last season too 😐... i hope they can get some new arms in there who actually live up to the hype πŸ’ͺ
