Police are on the hunt for three teenage males who allegedly tied to a fatal shooting that left 16-year-old Khyon Smith-Tate dead at a Chipotle restaurant near Temple University. The incident occurred during dinner rush on Monday night, when Smith-Tate entered the bathroom where he was shot.
According to investigators, surveillance footage shows Smith-Tate entering the bathroom with another person before being shot. One shell casing was found in the bathroom, and police have been reviewing security footage from nearby cameras.
Police are seeking three suspects, all 16- or 17-years-old, each described as wearing distinctive clothing items. The first suspect has dreadlocks and wore a black coat, pink hooded sweatshirt, and black pants at the time of the shooting. The second suspect was also wearing a black coat and carrying a black backpack. The third suspect had dreadlocks and wore a black coat with a blue hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored pants.
Temple University's leadership released a statement condemning the violence and expressing support for the victim's family. "The loss of life to gun violence is a profound tragedy and there are no words that can make sense of it," President John Fry said.
The Chipotle restaurant, located at 1100 Montgomery Avenue, has been temporarily closed as police continue their investigation. Employees were provided with counseling services by the company, which stated it is cooperating fully with authorities.
As the spring semester begins, Temple University's campus and surrounding community remain in shock following this devastating incident.
