Prospect Lefferts Gardens day care shut amid 'horrific' child abuse allegations

Brooklyn Daycare Shut Down Amid Allegations of Child Abuse and Neglect

A daycare center in Prospect Lefferts Gardens has been closed indefinitely after numerous allegations surfaced of child abuse and neglect. Parents claim that their children were physically mistreated, including being grabbed and tossed by an employee, while also eating lunch on the floor without proper supervision.

The closure came after a former employee sent videos to parents showing their children's alleged abuse, sparking outrage among parents who validated the footage. The daycare's owner, Shareese Dukes, has denied any wrongdoing, stating that she had taken "all necessary measures" after learning of the incident.

However, city officials say that the allegations are "horrific and unacceptable," and an investigation is ongoing to determine the extent of the abuse. Parents who once trusted the center claim that their children were enrolled in excess of the licensed capacity, with at least 14 children seen in a video taken during one session.

Critics are calling for stricter regulation and greater oversight of childcare providers in Brooklyn. Councilmember Crystal Hudson expressed her dismay, stating that parents do not expect such traumatic experiences when sending their children to daycare.

An attorney for the daycare center stated that an employee accused of abuse was immediately terminated, but questions remain about how the allegations were initially handled by management. As the investigation continues, officials are exploring whether they can issue fines or penalties despite the center's closure.

The case highlights a concerning trend in Brooklyn's childcare system, with many parents left feeling shaken and uncertain about their child's safety.

🚨 This is absolutely horrific what's been going on at this daycare center. I can only imagine how scared those kids must have felt when they were being physically grabbed and tossed by an employee. And eating lunch on the floor without proper supervision? That's just basic neglect.

I don't think Shareese Dukes knows what "all necessary measures" even mean in this situation. How could she not know about these allegations going on in her own center? It's like she was living in a bubble, oblivious to what was really happening behind the scenes.

And don't even get me started on the whole licensing thing. If they were exceeding capacity and putting extra kids at risk, that's just a huge red flag right there. I'm so glad the parents spoke out and got those videos to prove it.

This case needs to be taken seriously and some real changes need to be made in our childcare system. We can't just keep sweeping these problems under the rug and expecting everything to magically get better. Our kids deserve so much better than that 😡

Ugh, this is so messed up 🤕. I mean, can't you just trust that the people running these daycare centers are doing their job? Apparently not. I've got two younger cousins who go to daycare and I'm always worrying about them getting hurt or neglected. This Prospect Lefferts Gardens place is literally the worst example of what's gone wrong. 14 kids in a room with one staff member? It's like they're just winging it over there 🤦‍♀️. And now parents have to deal with the trauma of their kids being abused and then finding out that the owners were doing NOTHING about it. Like, how do you even handle this kind of thing? I guess we need stricter regulations and better oversight, but like, where do we start? 🤔 It's just so frustrating knowing that some places are putting our kids in harm's way without even realizing it...

man this is just heartbreaking 🤕, i mean what kind of environment can you create where kids feel like they're not safe or being taken care of? it's like, we as a society have this idea that daycare centers are supposed to be these nurturing spaces for kids, but clearly that's not the case here. and it makes me wonder about the people who run these places, what drives them to neglect their responsibilities like this? is it just a lack of resources or oversight? it's a really complex issue and i think we need to have some tough conversations about how we're holding our childcare providers accountable.

and yeah, stricter regulation might be part of the solution, but it feels like that should've been done in the first place. like, shouldn't there be checks in place to prevent situations like this from happening? it's not just about punishing the people who are bad, it's about creating a system that prevents bad things from happening in the first place.

anyway, my heart goes out to all these families who've been affected by this...

😟 oh man, this is so disturbing... I mean, who expects that at a daycare? 🤯 it just makes me wanna question the whole system, like how can they let all these kids be in a situation where someone's just grabbing them around like that? 😷 and eating lunch on the floor without proper supervision? 🍔😝 that's just crazy!

I think we need to make sure the authorities are taking this super seriously and not just letting it slide because the center is closed. Like, what about all these parents who trusted this place and now their kids are traumatized? 😨 shouldn't they be getting some kinda support or something?

And yeah, stricter regulation would definitely help... like, how can we even trust a daycare if there's no one watching over everything? 🤔 it's just too many questions about how all these things went down.

😩 this is a total nightmare for any parent, you're supposed to feel safe when your kid is at daycare, not traumatized... the fact that they were eating lunch on the floor like it was no big deal is just appaling 💔

and what's up with the owner denying anything and saying she took "all necessary measures" after learning of the incident? that just comes off as a weak excuse 🙄

🤕 This whole thing is a total nightmare, fam! I mean, how can you just close down an entire daycare without even doing your due diligence? It's all about those politics, you feel me? Councilmember Hudson's got the right to be upset, but we gotta ask ourselves, what's gonna stop this from happening in other centers? We need stricter regulations and oversight, stat! 🚨 I'm not saying Shareese Dukes is off the hook or anything, but we gotta get to the bottom of this. And those parents who enrolled their kids in excess of capacity... that's just a whole 'nother can of worms. We need accountability, not just for the center, but for the entire system. This case needs a full-blown investigation, and fast! 🔍

man I'm so disappointed this has to happen 🤕 like what kind of world are we living in where our kids have to be scared to go to daycare?! I got friends who send their little ones there and they're literally shaking with worry right now. the fact that the owner is denying anything is just infuriating 🙄 but you gotta give credit to the parents who spoke up, those videos were super brave of them. I mean yeah city officials are all over this like "we need stricter regulations" but come on it's about time, we shouldn't have to live in fear of sending our kids off to school... or daycare 😩

Ugh this is so messed up 🤯 what kinda place just throws kids on the floor for lunch?! I mean I know accidents happen but if someone's gonna do that it should be reported ASAP not just sent to parents later like they're trying to sweep it under the rug. And 14 kids in one room? That's a recipe for disaster! They need to get their act together and figure out what went wrong before they open back up. Fines or penalties better be on the table too, I don't care who you are, that's just not okay 🚫

🤕 This is such a disturbing turn of events. I mean, can you even imagine sending your little one to daycare thinking they're going to be safe? 🙅‍♀️ It's just not right that some places are prioritizing profits over people and putting kids in harm's way.

I think it's crazy that the owner is denying any wrongdoing despite all these allegations. Like, what does she have to lose at this point? The center is shut down, her reputation is ruined... but still she's trying to spin this and make herself look innocent. 🙄 It's just not going to fly.

And can we talk about how the licensing capacity was way exceeded in that daycare? That's like, a recipe for disaster. How were parents supposed to know their child wasn't being properly cared for with all those kids crammed into one space? 🤯 It's just another example of how broken our system is.

I'm so frustrated by this whole situation and I don't think it's going to be easy to fix. We need to take a hard look at how we regulate childcare providers in Brooklyn and make some serious changes. This isn't about blaming individual employees or owners, it's about creating a safer system for all the kids who deserve it. 💪
