Reeves criticises budget leaks and says income tax decision taken 'in partnership' with PM

UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has slammed "unacceptable" leaks before her budget announcement, revealing that an income tax U-turn was agreed in partnership with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The chancellor, defending her tax and spending plans to MPs on the Commons Treasury committee, expressed frustration over "leaks that were clearly not authorised", which she said had caused significant damage and IT security issues.

Reeves acknowledged that there were leaks before her November speech, but insisted that an income tax rise was never a certainty. Instead, she revealed that she and Starmer had been working together to prepare for an announcement about increasing tax rates, but ultimately decided against it due to other measures raising sufficient revenues.

The chancellor maintained that the decision was made in "close partnership" with the prime minister, who met her two to three times a week before the budget. This contradicts earlier reports suggesting that the plan had been dropped despite no authorised briefing.

Reeves defended her fiscal rule, which includes leaving almost Β£22bn of headroom against the target. She acknowledged that she reserves the right to take further action if necessary, but downplayed the likelihood.

The chancellor also announced several key policy changes, including scrapping plans for capital gains tax on primary residences and the pensions triple lock in the current parliament. However, economists have warned that her budget plans may be subject to scrutiny over their deliverability, particularly given concerns about the credibility of revenue-raising measures.

Reeves assured investors that the government would introduce legislation to enact tax changes at the earliest possible opportunity, including a new council tax surcharge on properties worth more than Β£2m and an electric vehicle levy.

Ugh 🀯... another budget leak... can't these people keep secrets for once? πŸ˜’ it's like they're trying to make the government look incompetent. newsflash: if you don't want something to leak, don't agree to the details with your boss, genius πŸ’‘. also, Β£22bn of headroom against the target? sounds like a recipe for disaster 🚨. and what's up with the council tax surcharge? another way for the wealthy to get even wealthier πŸ˜’.

I'm shocked that those " authorised" leaks happened 🀯. I mean, can't people just keep their mouths shut for one sec? πŸ˜‚ It's like, what even is the point of having a budget if you're just gonna leak all the details out there and cause a ruckus? And now they're saying it was all part of a "close partnership" between Rachel Reeves and Keir Starmer? That sounds like something outta a rom-com πŸ“Ί. I don't know, man...my grandma could've predicted this stuff back in 2018 πŸ˜‚. The thing is, though, those budget changes do sound kinda necessary, like increasing that council tax surcharge on properties worth more than Β£2m might actually make people think twice about buying some of these overpriced places πŸ πŸ’Έ. And I guess it's good they're scrapping the pensions triple lock and all that...people are always complaining about how expensive things are already 😩. But still, leaks? Really? Can't we just have a smooth announcement like everyone else for once? πŸ€”

πŸ€” just thinkin... if you're gonna leak some info before the big announcement, better make it sound like u got clearance lol... and what's up with this budget plan tho? πŸ€‘ seems like there's still a lot of uncertainty around how much revenue they'll actually raise... maybe Reeves is tryna set expectations low so she can exceed them later on? πŸ’Έ anyway, good to see some changes comin' down the pipe like scrappin' cap gains tax on primary homes πŸ‘

"Budgets are like bad relationships - you think they're going to end in disaster, but sometimes it's just a surprise 🀯. Looks like Chancellor Reeves got played by the PM, and we're all paying for it πŸ’Έ. The U-turn on income tax is just the tip of the iceberg... or should I say, the tip of the fiscal deficit πŸ“‰."

Umm okay I dunno... I mean, leaks are just gonna happen, right? πŸ€” Can't really blame Rachel for getting frustrated, especially if they were unauthorised. But at the same time, can't we trust a government to keep some things under wraps until the big reveal? πŸ’Έ It seems like there was a bit of a back-and-forth with Keir on this income tax thingy... wonder what's really going on behind closed doors 😏. Also, Β£22bn headroom? That sounds like a pretty generous buffer if you ask me πŸ€‘. Not sure I buy the whole "we can afford it" narrative just yet πŸ’ΈπŸ‘€

πŸ€” so yeah i'm not surprised about this leak thingy, politics is all about spin control right? like Reeves is trying to deflect blame but it's actually good that some info came out... about the income tax u-turn tho, i think it's cool that she and Starmer are working together 🀝 on the budget. but at the same time, economists are already questioning whether this plan will work out πŸ’ΈπŸ“Š

😐 this whole thing is just so frustrating... like, we're supposed to trust our leaders now? Rachel Reeves is basically saying that her budget plan was just "agreed upon" with Keir Starmer, but I'm not buying it πŸ€‘ the fact that she's slamming leaks and trying to cover up a U-turn on income tax just feels like more of the same old politics. And what really gets me is that economists are already warning about deliverability... meanwhile, Reeves is just glossing over all these concerns with her "close partnership" nonsense πŸ’β€β™€οΈ it's not like she's being transparent or anything 🀐 and by the way, who exactly did these leaks hurt? The public? Not really πŸ™„

aww don't be too hard on Rachael Reeves lol she's just doing her job πŸ€— I think it's good that she's owning up to those leaks and being transparent about the process...it sounds like a lot of backroom deal-making went into that income tax u-turn 😊 anyway, nice move on scrapping that primary residence capital gains tax and pensions triple lock - some much needed relief for people! πŸ’ΈπŸ‘

πŸ™„ I'm all about layout and structure, so let's get straight to it - the leaks before the budget announcement are literally a mess πŸ“‰πŸ’Έ. Reeves is getting roasted by economists saying her budget plans might not deliver πŸ’ΈπŸ˜¬. The whole income tax U-turn thing had me confused too πŸ€”. And what's with all these policy changes? Like, how are they supposed to work together? 🀝🏻

And can we talk about the IT security issues for a sec? πŸ˜‚ Like, how do you expect everything to be so secretive when there are leaks everywhere? 🀫 It's just so... 2020s πŸ“†. Reeves needs to step up her game and get some better info-security 🚨. And what about the credibility of those revenue-raising measures? πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ That's a whole other can of worms πŸ”ͺ.

Anyway, Reeves is sticking to her guns πŸ’ͺ, but I'm still not convinced πŸ€”. The government needs to be more transparent and get their act together before they start making big announcements πŸ“’.

πŸ€” I think it's pretty weird that there are leaks before a big announcement like this... I mean, you'd think that if they were gonna drop a plan, they'd tell everyone involved first? πŸ€‘ But I guess that's just how politics works now. πŸ’Έ

So the Chancellor is saying that she and Keir Starmer worked together on the budget plans, but it sounds like there was some confusion about whether to include an income tax rise. That's kinda interesting... I wonder if there were some disagreements between them? 🀝

I'm also a bit curious about the capital gains tax on primary residences being scrapped... does that mean people won't have to pay taxes on their houses anymore? 🏠 It sounds like it could be a big deal for some folks.

Anyway, it'll be interesting to see how this all plays out... economists are saying that the budget plans might not add up, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens. πŸ’Έ

OMG I just saw this news 🀯 like what's going on with the budget announcement? First of all, leaks before the big reveal is super annoying πŸ’” especially when they're not even sanctioned by the gov't. I get that there was a u-turn planned but it feels like the plan got leaked and everyone freaked out πŸ˜…

I'm kinda curious how this whole thing went down... did Rachel Reeves really work closely with Keir Starmer or is it just spin control? πŸ€” I mean, it sounds pretty suspicious that she's saying they met up all the time if there was no authorised briefing πŸ™ƒ

Also, what's up with all these policy changes? The scrapping of capital gains tax on primary residences and pensions triple lock seems like some big wins for certain groups... but are economists just gonna sit back and let her ride this out? πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

idk why ppl expect govts to keep all info under wraps lol πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ u think rachel reeves is worried about some ppl spilling the beans? she's right, leaks are bad, but like, come on... a budget announcement should be more than just some random number πŸ€‘. and btw, an income tax u-turn? who knew that'd happen? 🀯 guess the plan was to make it seem like they're trying to help ppl with inflation, but actually just lining their pockets πŸ’Έ. anywayz, glad she's keeping her fiscal rule, don't wanna see those headroom funds disappear 😬

Ugh 🀯, I'm so done with these budget leaks! Can't they just keep their promises for once? πŸ˜’ It's like they're trying to sabotage Reeves' whole thing. And now she's got to deal with the fallout... it's a nightmare. πŸ’₯ The fact that Starmer was working with her behind closed doors is suspicious, tbh πŸ€”. I don't trust these politicians as far as I can throw 'em. πŸ’ͺ Anyway, let's see how this all plays out... fingers crossed Reeves can get her budget done without any more leaks! 🀞

πŸ€”πŸ’Έ The Meme Dropper: when a budget leak happens, the chicken comes home to roost πŸ“πŸ˜‚! Starmer and Reeves had a ' close partnership' but it looks like they were secretly having a budget picnic πŸŽ‰ without the public's knowledge 🀫. Economics 101: you can't just announce a tax U-turn and then blame leaks πŸ™„. Reeves is trying to butter up investors with new council tax and EV levies, but will her budget be a 'yes' or 'no'? πŸ€žπŸ“Š

πŸ€” So I'm thinking, leaks can be super frustrating for anyone in a high-pressure role like a Chancellor... especially when you're trying to present a clear plan to the country. But what's interesting here is that Rachel Reeves seems pretty calm about it all πŸ™. She's not getting defensive or apologetic, which suggests she knows there was no actual breach of trust with Keir Starmer.

I also wonder if the "unacceptable" leaks might've been more than just a PR stunt to distract from the real policy changes... Like, what else could be at play here? Is it possible that some folks within the government were trying to sabotage the income tax U-turn plan without actually having the power to do so? 🀝 The way Reeves is framing it, though, makes me think she's trying to own the narrative and spin this as a positive development.

Economists are already warning about the potential deliverability of her budget plans... but I think Reeves' approach might just be the right one πŸ’Έ. By scrapping some tax measures and introducing new ones, she might actually create more revenue without making things too painful for ordinary people. It's all about finding that sweet spot, right? πŸ€‘
