San Franciscans say 'goodbye' to SF Centre as it permanently shuts its doors

San Francisco's beloved shopping hub, the San Francisco Centre, has officially closed its doors after nearly four decades of serving the city. The mall, a staple of local culture and commerce, will no longer be a destination for shoppers, diners, or socialites.

For many San Franciscans, including Theresa Benitez, who met friends at the mall while in college, the closure is a personal loss. "It's just sad to see a part of the history of the city just ending a chapter," she said, her voice filled with emotion. Sade Kellogg, another local, echoed similar sentiments, recalling fond memories of hanging out with friends in the food court. "We used to come out here and hang out with our friends... it was just a great place to be."

The mall's decline had been a long time coming, however. Years of slowing business and economic uncertainty took its toll on the once-thriving shopping center. In recent months, the mall was sold at foreclosure auction, and the new owners ended the remaining tenant leases.

Mayor Daniel Lurie acknowledged the change, stating that "the market is going to dictate who comes in there." While this may signal a new era for the property, many locals will miss its presence. Gregory Murray, another San Francisco resident, noted that the mall was an iconic part of the city's landscape. "It's like a lot of things in San Francisco... things have been changing."

As news of the closure spread, social media was flooded with posts calling for impromptu celebrations at the mall on Sunday. Antwan Shelbua, who sparked the movement, encouraged fans to show up and play music together. His message resonated with many, who saw the closure as an opportunity to create one last memory.

The future of the San Francisco Centre remains uncertain, but its impact on the city will undoubtedly be felt for years to come.

I'm really saddened by this news πŸ€•. The San Francisco Centre was more than just a mall, it was a gathering place that brought people together. I can imagine how nostalgic and emotional Theresa's comment must have been, reminiscing about meeting friends there while in college. It's disheartening to see the decline of such an iconic institution, but at the same time, it's fascinating to witness how communities come together in times like these 🌟.

The idea of a spontaneous celebration is actually quite brilliant πŸ’‘, and Antwan Shelbua's message was infectious. It highlights the mall's cultural significance and its role as a hub for social interactions. The fact that the new owners are allowing fans to take over the space for one last hurrah is a testament to the power of community engagement.

It's also interesting to consider the broader implications of this closure on San Francisco's urban landscape πŸ—ΊοΈ. As Gregory Murray noted, change is inevitable, and it will be fascinating to see how the city adapts to the loss of this beloved institution πŸ€”

I'm so sad about this πŸ€• San Fran is losing a piece of its soul... I mean, who doesn't have fond memories of hanging out with friends in the food court or browsing through those iconic stores? It's like they're erasing part of the city's history πŸ“š I get that times change and businesses shift, but it feels like we're saying goodbye to a part of ourselves πŸ˜” I love how the community is coming together to make one last memory though πŸ’– let's make it happen! πŸŽ‰

it's a bummer that the sf centre is closing... been around for so long and it's like a big part of san francisco's history is getting erased πŸ€•. i remember going there with my friends when we were in high school, eating at the food court and just chillin' out. it was always poppin'. but at the same time, the mall was never the same after it started losing tenants and stuff... it was like it was just trying to hold on for too long.

i'm not sure what the future holds for the sf centre, but i hope whoever takes over can find a way to keep some of that old vibe alive. i mean, we're all gonna miss it πŸ˜”.

πŸ™οΈ I think its kinda weird that a place thats been around for so long is just closed down like that... i mean, i get it, shopping centers arent as popular as they used to be what with online shopping and all but you would think there was a way to keep it alive πŸ€”. anywayz, its def sad for the ppl who grew up going ther or still go ther now lol 😐

πŸ˜” I just heard about the closure of the San Francisco Centre and it's kinda bittersweet. Like, you can understand why they had to close it down due to all the financial struggles, but at the same time it's like losing a part of our city's history & culture πŸ“šπŸ’• I've seen pics of people trying to grab one last photo op at the mall before it closed and it's just so nostalgic 😍. Now that there's talk of impromptu parties, it'll be interesting to see how that all goes down πŸŽ‰. I guess you could say the San Francisco Centre was more than just a shopping mall - it was an iconic part of our city's identity πŸŒ†πŸ’–

omg 😱 i'm literally dying over here! the sf centre has been a staple of my childhood/friendship memories 🀣 what's next? is the pier gonna get torn down too?! 😩 it's not just about the mall, it's about the nostalgia and culture that comes with it. we're losing a part of san francisco's identity here 🌊 i'm all for progress and change but sometimes i wish we could just preserve the old stuff for old times sake πŸ’”

omg did u see this 🀯 san francisco centre just closed its doors after 40 yrs what's gonna happen 2 the people who worked there? i feel so sad 4 every1 who has memories of hangin out dere in college like theresa & sade πŸ’” it's not just a mall it's a part of history πŸ•°οΈ

i wonder if they'll reopen it as somethin new or just leave it empty πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ maybe the new owners will listen 2 the fans' wishes & turn it into a park or somethin 🌳 but it feels like it's gonna be one of those buildings u can never get 2 know again πŸ˜”

man... i feel like this is gonna be a major loss 4 san francisco πŸ€• it's not just about the mall itself, it's about the memories & vibes that people had there πŸ˜” those were places where ppl came 2 hang out, grab food, & make life-long friends. now it's all gone & i'm sad 2 hear that πŸŽ‰ some ppl might see this as an opportunity 2 start something new, but 4 me, it's hard 2 imagine sf w/o the sf centre πŸ˜”

the sf centre was more than just a mall it was like a community hub πŸ™οΈπŸ’– my fave part? the food court was where i spent most of my uni days with friends πŸ΄πŸ‘« and i remember hearing about how they were gonna sell it off to whoever can afford it πŸ˜” not sure what's next but maybe we'll get a new spot that's even better 🀞

omg i just found out about this 🀯 san francisco centre closing down is like such a bummer i loved shopping there when i was a kid my mom would take me and we'd hit all the stores it's crazy how quickly things change in city life my friends and i would always have so much fun at the mall whether we were trying out new restaurants or just chillin' in the food court πŸ΄πŸ˜‚ what's next for san francisco centre will they ever reopen?

OMG u guys!! 🀯 can't believe my fave mall in SF is gone! I remember going there with friends after school, trying out all the food stalls and browsing through stores like H&M & Abercrombie. It's like a piece of our childhood history is being torn away. 😒 the closure is such a shame, especially since it's been slowly dying for years πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ but I gotta respect the new owners making moves to revamp the space. maybe we'll see some cool renovations & new tenants? πŸ€” still sad tho πŸ’”

πŸ€• it's a shame to see a piece of san francisco's history just fade away πŸŒ† the mall was more than just a shopping destination - it was a gathering spot, a place to make memories with friends and family... now that's just gone πŸ˜” i remember hearing my grandparents talk about how they used to take their kids to the food court when it first opened back in the 80s 🍴 those were the days... it's crazy to think that a piece of san francisco's past is being erased before our eyes ⏰

πŸ€” u guys can't even keep a mall open anymore it's just crazy. what happened to san francisco? used to go there with friends and family, now it's closed forever 🚫. i remember when the food court was still cool and not all touristy. those were the days. now its all gentrified and expensive πŸ€‘. anyway, impromptu celebration at the mall on sunday is a pretty sweet idea tho πŸŽ‰

man this is crazy 🀯... i mean i get it the mall was old news and all that but it's still sad to see a piece of history go πŸ˜”... like i've been to SF centre with friends and family and it's always a vibe πŸ’ƒπŸ½... plus it was more than just shopping it was an event place πŸŽ‰... but at the same time i think the city needs to adapt and move forward πŸ”„... we can't keep clinging to old things all the time πŸ‘€... but still gotta respect the nostalgia πŸ™... anyways gotta give props to Antwan Shelbua for getting people hyped about making memories one last time πŸ’₯

just a shame to see another oldie like this go πŸ™ the sf centre was always so lively and full of character... now it's just gonna be a hulk in the middle of the city πŸ€– gotta feel bad 4 all the memories that got made there πŸ‘«

πŸ€•πŸ˜” It's crazy how things can just vanish like that. I mean, I'm not surprised it happened to the SF Centre - lots of malls are struggling these days πŸ›οΈπŸ’Έ. It's so bittersweet though... one minute you're laughing with friends in the food court πŸ°πŸ‘«, and the next, it's all over. I hope whoever buys the property does something cool with it, like turn it into a community space or something 🀞.

man I feel so bad for SF... this place was like a part of the city's soul πŸ€• it's crazy how something that was once so vibrant and full of life can just fade away... the food court was literally where I met my first friends in college πŸ΄πŸ‘« i remember those were some amazing times, always laughing and making memories with our crew... it's wild to think about a place that had such an impact on people's lives being completely shut down πŸ˜”

and yeah, the business decline was coming for ages, but still, it's sad to see it go... I mean, you can't just put a price tag on history and all that stuff πŸ€‘πŸ’Έ i guess we'll have to wait and see what happens next with this property, maybe some new owner will come in and breathe some life back into it... or maybe it'll get some cool art installation or something πŸ€”πŸŽ¨

anyway, I gotta respect the fans who wanted to throw one last party at the mall... that's dedication right there πŸ’–!

πŸ€• I'm kinda sad about this... I mean, who doesn't love a good ol' fashioned shopping trip or just chillin' in the food court? 🍴 It's like, a part of our history is gone and it's hard to wrap my head around that. But at the same time, I get why the mall was struggling - times are tough, you know? πŸ’Έ The city's always changing and sometimes things just gotta make way for new stuff. πŸŒ† I'm not gonna lie, though... it's weird seeing all those old pics and vids of people hangin' out at the mall. It feels like a different era altogether. 😎
