Screening at Sundance: Gregg Araki’s ‘I Want Your Sex’

Gregg Araki's "I Want Your Sex" is a return to form for the director, despite not quite hitting all the right notes. This racy workplace sex farce is reminiscent of Halina Reijn's more serious erotic drama "Babygirl," with which Araki has often been compared. The story follows Elliot (Cooper Hoffman), an introverted college graduate who finds himself ensnared by his seductive older boss, Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde).

The film starts as a campy mystery, with Elliot stumbling out of a daze to the mansion swimming pool of his employer only to find her naked and face down in the water. As he's interrogated by detectives, his recollections return to a few months prior, where we're introduced to the movie's major players. Desperate for a job, Elliot applies to be Erika's assistant, where he studies up on her verbose proclamations on modern art – delivered in the nude.

Wilde gives a marvelous performance as an unhinged sex monster whose sociopathic selfishness runs deeper and darker than you might expect. Despite dressing and behaving with a sense of sexual emancipation, her views on erotic photography seem to shift depending on who she's talking to. Meanwhile, Hoffman delivers a physically expressive performance that is both cutesy and comically perplexed.

However, the film's approach to sexuality can be clunky at times, hitting you over the head with finger-wagging conversations that feel self-defeating. Araki positions "I Want Your Sex" as a film of permission to let loose and live, but it's hard not to wonder if this is exactly the right venue for such a statement.

Despite these issues, there's a tremendous amount of fun to be had in the performances, particularly Wilde's, which hides pulsing anxieties in plain sight. The film may not have much to say about sex or relationships, but its livewire comic scenarios yield raucous and sexually charged entertainment seldom seen in Hollywood of late.

"I Want Your Sex" is a welcome departure from the self-imposed norms that stifle sexual expression, despite the cinematic ground broken by Araki and his ilk over several decades. The film may be a reminder that there's still room for raunchy, entertaining trash in the American indie scene – and Wilde delivers it with aplomb.

So i think araki's trying to say somethin here about sex work & power dynamics, but it feels kinda superficial? like he's more focused on makin it a wild party film rather than really gettin into the complexities of erika's character... 🤔

i love olivia wilde tho, she's so talented at playin this unhinged persona... 😏 and cooper hoffman is cute in his own weird way too. but sometimes i feel like araki is relyin too much on shock value rather than really subvertin the norms... 🚫

still, it's a fun watch & wilde shines in her performance... 🎥 and it's nice to see someone breakin the mold of what's considered acceptable in hollywood lately. maybe araki isn't tryin to change the world but he's definitely givin us somethin to think about... 💭

oh, and i love how wilde's character just kinda shatters all these expectations with her sociopathic nature... that's some freaky stuff right there 😳

U gotta love olivia wilde as erika tracy lol 🤣 she's like the ultimate sex monster 🍑♀️!!! cooper hoffman's performance is pretty cool too, i mean who wouldn't get all confused with that many weird vibes from his boss 😂. araki's definitely got some issues with sexuality tho, its like he's trying way too hard to be edgy 💁‍♀️🔪. but like, whatever, the movie's still fun and wilde is just straight fire 🔥

I gotta say, I'm a bit miffed that Gregg Araki didn't quite nail it with "I Want Your Sex" 🤔. The film's got some great moments, especially Olivia Wilde's performance - she totally brings the house down as that unhinged sex monster 💁‍♀️! But yeah, the whole finger-wagging thing can feel a bit forced at times, you know? It's like Araki is trying to say something deep about sex and permission, but it just doesn't quite land. Still, I love the energy of the film - it's like one big raucous party 🎉! And Wilde's just so much fun to watch, she's got this whole "anxious sociopath" thing down pat 😂. It's a bit of a messy film, but hey, that's part of its charm, right?

🤩 Interesting how Gregg Araki is trying to push boundaries with "I Want Your Sex" despite some clunky moments 🚫💦 Olivia Wilde shines as a complex and unhinged character 😏 her performance is truly captivating 🎬 I love how the film delivers raucous and entertaining comic scenarios 🤣 it's like a wild ride of sex, humor, and chaos 🌪️

I don't usually comment but I gotta say this movie "I Want Your Sex" by Gregg Araki is like a wild ride 😂. I love how Olivia Wilde plays this unhinged sex monster, she's so intense and charismatic on screen 🤯. Cooper Hoffman is pretty good too, his reactions are hilarious and you can tell he's trying not to get caught up in Erika's drama 🙃.

But honestly, the film feels a bit shallow at times? It's like Araki is just trying to say something about sex and relationships but doesn't really have much to say 🤔. And those conversations between Erika and Elliot can be super cringeworthy 😳.

Still, I do think the movie has its moments and Wilde shines in it 💁‍♀️. It's like a raunchy party on screen and I'm here for it 🎉. Maybe not exactly deep but hey who needs depth when you've got a talented cast and some great comedic moments? 😊

I saw "I Want Your Sex" and I gotta say, Olivia Wilde is ON FIRE 🤯🔥 Her performance as Erika Tracy is so wild and unpredictable, it's like she's dancing on the edge of crazy 💃. But, for me, the film feels a bit... off. It's like Gregg Araki is trying to tell us something about sex and freedom, but he's not quite sure how to say it 😕. The conversations can feel a bit too preachy or self-righteous, you know? Like, I get it, let's have fun and live a little, but do we need to hit us over the head with it? 🤦‍♀️ Still, Wilde's energy is infectious, and she totally steals the show 🎬. The film may not be perfect, but it's definitely a blast 🎉. I'd give it 3 out of 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐

OMG 🤩 I'm so down for this one!!! I love how Olivia Wilde slays as Erika Tracy, she's like totally unhinged 😂! And Cooper Hoffman is adorbs as Elliot, his reactions are literally priceless 💀! The campy mystery vibes at the beginning are so funny and lighthearted 🌴. I'm with you on the film not hitting all the right notes tho...some of the conversations feel a bit preachy 😒. BUT overall, it's still SO much fun to watch and Olivia Wilde gives me LIFE 💁‍♀️! Can't wait to see more from Gregg Araki 🎬

omg i loved olivia wilde's performance in this flick she's like totally unhinged as erika tracy the way she plays it both empowered and sociopathic is giving me all the feels 🤯 her chemistry with cooper hoffman is also so on point they have great comedic timing especially when elliot is trying to figure out what's going on in his own life lol. but yeah araki can be a bit hit or miss for me - this one didn't quite land but i loved the overall vibe and tone of it 🎥

😊 i mean, wilde's performance is insane, she totally owns that sex monster role, but you're right about the film being clunky at times... i love how it tries to tackle sex and relationships but ultimately just ends up being a fun, raunchy romp 🤣. i also think araki's return to form is cool, he hasn't made anything i've really loved in ages, so this one's a nice surprise. still not sure if it's a game changer or just another example of american indies pushing boundaries for the sake of it... 😐

I'm so obsessed with how Olivia Wilde slays as Erika Tracy 🤯🔥! She's like a wild animal, unpredictable and unhinged at the same time... I love how she brings this sense of sociopathic selfishness to the role. And Cooper Hoffman's physical comedy skills are on point too 😂👀. But, gotta say, some parts of the film feel like they're trying way too hard to make a statement about sex and freedom 🙄. It's like Gregg Araki is shouting "look at me, I'm edgy!" instead of just letting the performances speak for themselves 🤷‍♂️. Still, it's fun to watch, and Wilde's performance is pure magic ✨. Give me more of that! 💁‍♀️

Gregg Araki is back at it again 🤣, pushing boundaries with another provocative film that's equal parts cringeworthy and captivating. I mean, who else but Araki could turn a story about workplace seduction into a raunchy farce that's both laugh-out-loud funny and disturbingly uncomfortable? The way he milks the tension between Elliot and Erika is like watching a train wreck - you can't look away!

Cooper Hoffman shines as the clueless assistant, bringing a lovable awkwardness to the role. And Olivia Wilde... oh man, she's unhinged in all the best ways! Her character's sociopathic tendencies are wickedly funny, but also make you wonder what's behind that façade of confidence and cool.

The real issue with this film is how on the nose it can be. I mean, who needs a conversation about consent when you've got a scene where Erika explains her views on erotic photography while doing a nude art class? It feels like Araki is trying to say something profound, but ends up coming across as self-righteous.

Despite its flaws, "I Want Your Sex" is undeniably entertaining. It's like a wickedly naughty fever dream that you can't help but indulge in. And when it comes down to it, isn't that what we're all looking for in Hollywood - something that's going to make us laugh, squirm, and maybe even think just a little bit?

i feel like i'm stuck in some kinda weird purgatory where araki is just trying to make this super campy sex romp but also subverting expectations at the same time 😂🤣 olivia wilde though, she's a whole different level of unhinged and mesmerizing. i love how she brings this complex character to life with such depth and nuance... but can we talk about how clunky some of the dialogue is? like, it feels like araki is trying too hard to be 'edgy' 😒 still, wilde's energy is infectious and makes me wanna watch this again just for her performance alone 💁‍♀️

I gotta say I'm loving this new Gregg Araki flick 🤪! Cooper Hoffman and Olivia Wilde are on point, their chemistry is electric 🔥. The way Wilde brings this complex, unhinged character to life is seriously captivating - she's got me both cringing and cheering at the same time 😂. I mean, who wouldn't want to watch a wild, raunchy romp with a performance like that? 🤣 The only thing that's keeping it from being a total masterpiece is maybe a few too many heavy-handed moments of "this is what we're saying about sex and freedom" - but overall, it's still a blast! 🎥💖
