SEPTA Unveils New Regional Rail Schedule, Boosting Service with Leased Cars
Starting next week, Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) Regional Rail riders will notice a change in their morning and evening commute. The authority has introduced new schedules on several lines, reflecting the arrival of 10 leased cars from Maryland's MARC system. These additional vehicles are expected to alleviate overcrowding during peak hours.
The Wilmington/Newark line, Trenton line, and Chestnut Hill East line will see entirely new schedules in effect, with increased train frequencies on some routes. The West Trenton and Trenton lines will benefit directly from the new arrivals, as the 10 MARC cars will be integrated into service to ease congestion during rush hours.
While these changes bring a boost to Regional Rail services, SEPTA acknowledges that significant enhancements are still pending. Federally mandated inspections on the aging Silverliner IV fleet have been ongoing since October, following multiple electrical fires raised safety concerns. The repairs are expected to be largely completed, with most of the remaining cars undergoing longer-term maintenance.
SEPTA is planning a comprehensive overhaul of its fleet, estimating that the process could take up to a decade. To accelerate the process, the authority has leveraged funds allocated by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and secured leases from MARC and Montreal's Exo system. As part of this plan, three bus routes β 201, 204, and 206 β will experience slight adjustments to their morning schedules.
New schedules can be viewed online, providing Regional Rail riders with a better understanding of upcoming service changes. With the arrival of these new leased cars, SEPTA aims to enhance its services and alleviate overcrowding on its lines.
