Study questions whether Detroit sales tax is worth it - Detroit Metro Times

I'm literally freaking out over this tax hike idea in Detroit... I mean what's next? 🤯 They're already drowning in debt and now they wanna add more taxes to the mix?! Like, have you seen the prices of living in Detroit?! It's like they're trying to suck every last penny outta people's pockets!

And don't even get me started on how this is gonna affect small businesses and families who are barely scraping by as it is... The thought of an extra 1% sales tax is just cruel, you know?! I'm no expert but from what I've read, the analysis suggests that the revenue might not be worth it and that it's better suited for counties or regional levels. Like, why complicate things?!

i dont think detroit needs more taxes lol they're already paying like crazy. im not sure how much of that $42m - $72m would actually make it to the people who need it most, you know? its like the city's gonna take a slice off your pizza money just to 'improve services' sounds like a bunch of bureaucratic mumbo jumbo 2 me 🤷‍♂️

I'm so done with these constant tax hikes 🙄. I mean, Detroiters are already paying a lot of taxes, it's not like they have an endless supply of cash just lying around 💸. And what's the point of raising more revenue if it's just gonna get lost in bureaucracy? 🤯 It seems to me that the city is just trying to sweep their problems under the rug instead of actually addressing them. I'd rather see some real, tangible improvements to services and infrastructure before we start throwing around new taxes like they're candy 🍬.

And what about all those online purchases that are supposed to affect the tax? 🛍️ Like, how exactly is the state gonna collect that on a city level? It just seems like a whole lot of hassle for not a ton of money. And the report's right, adopting a local sales tax is way too complicated – it's not like they're just gonna magically make it happen with some fancy constitutional amendment 💥.

I'm not sure what else Detroit can do at this point, but I think we need to be careful about throwing more and more money at their problems. Maybe instead of taxes, the city could try being more efficient or getting some outside help? 🤔

I gotta say, this tax hike thing in Detroit has got me thinking 🤔. I mean, the city's already feeling the pinch with all these local taxes, so adding another one seems like a recipe for disaster 💸. But on the other hand, we can't deny that they're struggling to keep up with services and debt payments ⚠️.

I'm not sure if it's worth going through all the hoops to get this sales tax passed, especially when you consider how much of a hit it'll have on local businesses and consumers 📉. And let's be real, we've got state laws that limit property taxes - so what's next? More taxes? It feels like they're just kicking the can down the road 👀.

I think Madhu Anderson makes some good points about this being a regional issue rather than local 💡. Maybe counties or something could take a stab at it and see if they can make it work 🤝. Either way, Detroit's gotta find a way to balance its books without breaking the bank 💸. That's just common sense, right?
