Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A Syrian refugee has made history in Germany by being elected as the mayor of a small town in Baden-Württemberg. Ryyan Alshebl, who fled his home in Syria eight years ago, won the mayoral election with an impressive 55.41% of the votes, defeating two German candidates.

Alshebl's victory has been met with joy from locals, who described it as a "fairy tale come true." The 29-year-old politician welcomed the win, calling it "sensational" and saying that Ostelsheim had sent an example for broad-mindedness and cosmopolitanism to the rest of Germany. Alshebl also emphasized that this was not something that could be taken for granted in a conservative, rural area.

Born into a family of schoolteacher and agricultural engineer parents, Alshebl described his life as carefree until the age of 20. However, protests against the Syrian government that began in 2011 soon devolved into chaotic war, forcing him to flee with millions of others. Alshebl faced the difficult decision of being drafted for military service or leaving Syria, ultimately choosing the latter.

After arriving in Germany as an asylum seeker, Alshebl worked tirelessly to build a new life for himself. He drew on his experience and made digital access to public administration services one of his priorities, as well as flexible childcare and climate protections.

Alshebl's journey has been marked by both challenges and triumphs. Despite facing hateful comments from far-right fringe voters during the campaign trail, he remained steadfast in his commitment to serving the community. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's open-door policy in 2015 had sparked a backlash in Germany and led to the rapid growth of the far-right Alternative for Germany party.

However, Alshebl's success has offered a glimmer of hope for a more inclusive and accepting Germany. As the first man with Syrian roots to run for and win a mayor's office, he is paving the way for others like him to follow in his footsteps. His victory also highlights the importance of investing in one's future and creating opportunities for all citizens, regardless of their background.

As Alshebl prepares to take up his new role in June, he will be tasked with addressing some of Ostelsheim's most pressing issues, including improving public services and promoting sustainable development. With his experience and commitment to social justice, there is little doubt that he will make a positive impact on the community he has come to call home.

🙏 Ostelsheim just showed Germany it can be open-minded 🤝. Alshebl's win is like a breath of fresh air 💨 after all those years of hate & division. People need to see someone with Syrian roots in a position of power, breaking the mold & paving way for others like him 👥. We should be celebrating this, not wondering how it happened 😊.
