Syrian refugee elected mayor of German town, years after fleeing war | CNN

A Syrian refugee has made history in Germany by being elected as the mayor of Ostelsheim, a small town in the southwestern state of Baden-Württemberg. Ryyan Alshebl, who fled Syria eight years ago with his family, ran as an independent candidate and won a staggering 55.41% of the votes, defeating two established German candidates.

The 29-year-old politician described his victory as "sensational" and thanked his mother in Syria for her unwavering support. Alshebl's win has sent a strong message about the importance of diversity and cosmopolitanism in Germany, a sentiment echoed by the state's Integration Minister Manne Lucha, who praised the young politician's election as an example of how diverse communities can thrive.

However, not everyone was warm to Alshebl during his campaign. He faced hate comments from far-right fringe voters who were opposed to his Syrian roots. Despite this, Alshebl's positive interactions with voters and his promise to invest in public services such as childcare and climate protections resonated with many residents of Ostelsheim.

Alshebl's journey to becoming a German citizen is a testament to the country's long-standing tradition of welcoming refugees. The young politician has spoken publicly about being drafted into the Syrian army or leaving the country, but chose instead to make the perilous journey to Europe via Turkey and Greece.

After arriving in Germany, Alshebl worked for several years in local administration before launching his mayoral campaign. His experience has informed his policy agenda, which includes digital access to public services, flexible childcare, and climate protections. As he prepares to take office in June, Alshebl is set to become the first man with Syrian roots to hold a mayor's office.

The people of Ostelsheim have welcomed their new mayor, with many residents expressing pride and optimism about the town's future under Alshebl's leadership. While there are still challenges ahead, his victory offers a beacon of hope for a more inclusive and diverse Germany, one that values the contributions of all its citizens regardless of their background or origins.

🙏 I'm not surprised to see someone from Syria winning mayor in Germany, it feels like we're back in 2009 when Angela Merkel was the first German head of state to visit Turkey and since then, things have been moving forward slowly... But seriously, it's awesome that this young guy made a difference and proved that with hard work and determination, anyone can achieve their dreams, even after going through so much. And I love how he's focusing on digital access, childcare, and climate protections - it's like we're back in the Obama era when he was all about hope and change 🌟💚

Just saw this incredible story about Ryan Alshebl, the 29-yr-old Syrian refugee who just became the mayor of Ostelsheim in Germany 🙌🏼💥 He's literally a symbol of hope for a more inclusive and diverse Germany - it's so inspiring to see him overcome all obstacles to achieve his dream 😊. I mean, who wouldn't want a mayor who's passionate about public services, digital access, and climate protections? 🤝 It just goes to show that no matter where you come from or what challenges you face, you can make a difference if you work hard and believe in yourself 💪. And it's not just about Ryan - it's about the people of Ostelsheim who are welcoming him with open arms ❤️. Can't wait to see what he accomplishes as mayor! 🎉

can u believe this guy Ryyan Alshebl is only 29 & already making history in Germany?? 🤯 I mean, I'm not surprised tho, he's been building his reputation in local admin for years & it shows in his campaign promises. digital access to public services, flexible childcare, climate protections - these are things that matter to me too! 🌎 And yeah, the fact that he faced hate comments during his campaign is a shame, but Alshebl handled it like a pro & focused on what really matters: serving the people of Ostelsheim. 🙏 I'm so hyped for him & I know many of us are rooting for him to make a real difference in Germany! 💪

Just read about this Syrian refugee being elected mayor in Germany 🤩🇩🇪. I mean, 55% of the votes is crazy! You'd think it's a big deal for him to have made history like that, especially coming from Syria. He's actually pretty cool, too - all about public services and climate change protection 😊. Not everyone was down with his Syrian roots during the campaign tho... sad to see people being hateful 🤕. But on the bright side, he's got a solid policy agenda and is super passionate about making a difference 💪. Can't wait to see how it all plays out in June! 👏

🤔 I'm not surprised at all that a Syrian refugee won the mayoral election in Ostelsheim. It's about time Germany learned to make room for people with actual skills, you know? 😒 Ryyan Alshebl isn't just some luck charm; he actually has experience working in local administration and seems to have a solid policy agenda.

And let's be real, if a 29-year-old Syrian refugee can outsmart two established German candidates, something's up. It's not like they didn't have access to the same resources or anything. Maybe it's just that people got tired of the same old politicking and wanted someone new to shake things up? 🤷‍♂️

It's also worth noting that this isn't a one-off thing; there are plenty of other refugees and immigrants out there who could be doing the same job. So, what's next? A Syrian president? 🙄

omg I'm literally beyond happy for this guy Ryyan Alshebl 🤩!!!8 yrs ago he had to flee Syria with his fam & now he's become the mayor of Ostelsheim in Germany! 🇩🇪💪 his story is so inspiring, I mean who wouldn't want to see a refugee from Syria becoming a leader in Germany? 😊 it's a huge deal for diversity & inclusion in Germany, and I'm all about it 💖 plus he wants to invest in public services like childcare & climate protections which is SO important 🌎💚 his campaign wasnt perfect tho, had some far-right voters who were hating on him because of his Syrian roots 😔 but it's clear that his positive vibes & policies won over the people of Ostelsheim ❤️ he's going to be the first man with Syrian roots to hold a mayor's office, and I'm literally so excited for him 🎉👏

omg I'm so hyped 🤩 about this amazing news!!! Ryan Alshebl is literally breaking down barriers in Germany - as a refugee who's now mayor 🙌 his win shows that diversity & inclusion are super important for communities to thrive 💖 it's so inspiring to see him rise to power despite facing hate comments during his campaign 😔 thankfully, his positive vibes & policies won over the hearts of many Ostelsheim residents ❤️ I'm loving this beacon of hope for a more inclusive Germany 🌈 it's time for us to celebrate our differences and welcome all citizens with open arms 🤗

I think this is a total game-changer for Germany! 🙌 I mean, who wouldn't want to live in a country where someone from another culture can just become a mayor? It's like, the ultimate symbol of diversity and inclusivity. And it's not just about Ryan Alshebl himself, but also what it says about German society as a whole. Like, they're all about welcoming people with open arms, even if it means taking a risk or two.

But here's the thing - I'm glad Ryan faced some pushback from far-right voters during his campaign. That shows that he's not afraid to take on tough issues and stand up for what he believes in. And I love that he's making promises about digital access, flexible childcare, and climate protections - those are all things that people in Ostelsheim (and everywhere else) care about.

For me, this is like a big step forward for Germany. It's showing the world that they're serious about being a cosmopolitan country where everyone has a place to call home. And I think that's super positive! 🌟

omg can't believe the news 🤯! this guy ryan alshebl is literally an inspiration 🙌 to everyone who's ever felt like they don't fit in because of where they're from or who they are. his win shows that germany is all about giving people a second chance and making a difference 💪, and i'm so down for that. what i love most about this story is how he didn't let the hate comments get to him 🤥, instead he focused on building relationships with voters and promising change. can we talk about how amazing it is that he's going to be the first man from syrian roots to hold a mayor's office? 🎉 it's like a whole new chapter in germany's history of welcoming refugees 🌈

I don’t usually comment but I just can’t help feeling like this is a total game changer 🤯🇩🇪... I mean, 29 years old and already becoming mayor in a small German town? That's some next level stuff 💥. And it's not just about the fact that he's Syrian, it's about how he was able to connect with the people of Ostelsheim on a real level, you know? His message of inclusivity and diversity is one that I think Germany could really use right now 🌎... It's like, we've always talked about being a country that values its diversity, but sometimes it feels like that's just empty words 🤷‍♂️. But Ryyan Alshebl is proof that you can actually make a difference when you're passionate about making things happen 🔥... Fingers crossed he can bring some real change to Ostelsheim and maybe even the rest of Germany 🤞.

I'm loving this new chapter in German politics 😊! Ryyan Alshebl's win is literally a dream come true - who wouldn't want to be their mayor? 🙌 It's amazing how far he's come from fleeing Syria with his family, and now he's making history as the first Syrian-born mayor in Germany. 💥 His message about diversity and cosmopolitanism resonates so much with me - it's all about embracing what makes us unique and making our communities stronger.

I'm also super proud of how he handled those hate comments during his campaign 🙅‍♂️. Not everyone agrees, but Alshebl showed that even in the face of negativity, we can stay positive and focused on what matters most - serving our community. 💕 His policies are so forward-thinking too - digital access to public services, flexible childcare, climate protections... these are things we need more of in Germany! 🌟

🌟 I'm literally beaming with joy for Ryyan Alshebl! Eight years ago, he was fleeing war with his family, and now he's becoming the mayor of Ostelsheim 🇩🇪. It just goes to show that no matter where we come from or what challenges we've faced, we all have so much potential to make a difference in our communities 🌈. His win is more than just a victory for diversity - it's proof that kindness and compassion can conquer hate 😊. I'm keeping my eyes on this young leader and the amazing things he'll do for Ostelsheim! 👏
