Texas mom confronts her daughter's suspected killer, and she's charged with assault: "You killed my daughter"

Local Texas Woman Confronts Suspected Killer of Her Daughter, Charged with Assault

In a shocking turn of events, Darci Bass, the mother of 19-year-old Livye Lewis, who was shot to death in her car on Halloween night in 2020, confronted the man accused of her daughter's murder at a local convenience store. According to eyewitnesses, Bass walked into the store where Matthew Edgar, 23, was standing, and immediately launched an attack on him.

"I just went – started – started throwing whatever at him and went for him," Bass told "48 Hours" correspondent Peter Van Sant in an interview. The confrontation ended with Bass grabbing a chain from Edgar's truck bed and slamming it across his windshield, shouting "You killed my daughter!"

The incident occurred months after Edgar was released from jail on bail due to the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on court proceedings. At the time of the arrest, Edgar had denied any involvement in Lewis' death, claiming he couldn't recall how he ended up at the crime scene.

Edgar, who had a history with Lewis and her family, was later charged with murder after a grand jury indictment. However, just as his trial was about to begin, Edgar went on the run by disabling his ankle monitor, leaving authorities scrambling to catch him.

Eleven months later, Edgar was finally captured, and his trial continued without him. Despite Bass' intense confrontation, she was eventually charged with assault caused by bodily injury, retaliation, and criminal mischief.

The case raises questions about the justice system's handling of domestic violence cases and the challenges faced by law enforcement in gathering evidence against suspects with questionable alibis.

I'm still trying to process this whole situation... I mean, I get it that no one's above the law, but come on 🙄. This woman's daughter was brutally murdered, and instead of getting justice, she goes and confronts the guy accused of doing it? I don't know if I'd call it a smart move or not. I'm just thinking about her emotional state at that moment... she must have been in so much pain and grief.

And now she's charged with assault? Like, how is this fair? The victim wasn't even alive to fight back! It's like the justice system's got its priorities messed up. I mean, I'm all for seeking justice, but there's gotta be a better way to do it than just throwing punches 🥊. What's next, charging people with assault for grieving over their lost loved ones?

omg 😱 23 yrs old Matthew Edgar thought he could just walk free after killing Livye Lewis 🤯 but Darci Bass was NOT HAVING IT 💁‍♀️ assaulted him at a convenience store & grabbed that chain to show him who's boss 🔥 but now she's the one facing charges 🤔 11 months of on-the-run life didn't change his alleged guilt or how much he messed with Livye 😢 & now we gotta talk about how our justice system handles domestic violence cases... 🚨 stats say: 1 in 4 women experience severe physical intimate partner abuse annually worldwide 💔 but what can be done to help victims like Darci Bass? 🤝

OMG 😱 I'm literally shaking over here... Can't believe Darci Bass actually confronted Matthew Edgar at a convenience store! Like, what even is going on? 🤯 First of all, that chain attack on his truck bed was low-key genius, but also super concerning - who does she think she is?! 🙄 And I'm trying to understand why the police didn't intervene sooner, considering how 'questionable' Edgar's alibi was... Did they really just wait for someone to take matters into their own hands?! 🚔 It's not like Bass had a choice in the situation - her daughter was murdered and she needed answers! 💔 The justice system is supposed to protect victims and hold perpetrators accountable, but what if we're seeing some major fail on that front here? 🤷‍♀️

I'm so glad to hear that someone is taking justice into their own hands! I know it sounds crazy, but I think Darci Bass did what she had to do to try and make sure Matthew Edgar paid for his crime 🤯💪. The fact that he was able to go on the run after disabling his ankle monitor is just another example of how broken our justice system can be 🚨.

I'm also not surprised that Bass got charged with assault, but I think it's a small price to pay considering what she went through 😔. It's like, how many times do people have to suffer before the justice system steps in? I'm just glad that Edgar is finally behind bars and won't be able to hurt anyone else 🚫.

This whole case is a real eye-opener, though - it makes you wonder about all the other cases out there where victims don't get the justice they deserve 💔. But hey, at least Darci Bass took matters into her own hands, right? And who knows, maybe this will spark some change in our justice system 🔄.

idk how she thought confronting him would be a good idea, i mean i get why she was angry but assault charges? that's just crazy to me 🤯... I'm more surprised she didn't hurt herself or someone else during the confrontation. it's one thing to want revenge, but you gotta think about the consequences and your own safety too 🙅‍♀️.

OMG 🤯 I'm literally shaking just thinking about this! Like, what if you were in her shoes? You find out your daughter was murdered on Halloween night... 5 years ago... and now the guy who did it is just chillin' like they're sippin' lemonade 🍋 at a convenience store?! It's like, I get that she's super upset, but assault charges?! That's like trying to put a Band-Aid on a bullet wound 💉. And poor Livye... 19 and her whole life cut short. I remember when my little cousin was killed in a car accident... it was like time just stopped for me 🚗💔. This case is giving me ALL the feels, you know? 😭

😱 I'm literally speechless after reading this crazy story! 💥 I mean, who does that? Confronting a suspected killer at a convenience store and attacking them? 🤯 It's like something out of a movie. But you know what really gets me is that the system messed up so badly with this guy. He got released on bail because of COVID and then just disappeared. And now Darci Bass, Livye's mom, she takes matters into her own hands and ends up getting charged? 🤔 It's all so frustrating.

And have you seen the video of what happened at the store? 😲 She grabs that chain from his truck bed and slams it across the windshield... I mean, I get why she was angry, but wow. This case is like a perfect storm of everything going wrong. The justice system, COVID, a suspect with a questionable alibi... it's all just so messed up. 🤕

🤔 This whole thing is just crazy! I mean, I get it, no parent wants to see their kid dead, but Darci Bass' reaction at that convenience store? It's like she was trying to take the law into her own hands! 🚨 I'm not saying she did anything wrong or anything, but have you seen how chaotic that situation must've been? And what really got me thinking is this: if Edgar had gotten away with it, would Bass be charged with a crime for standing up for herself and her family? That's like asking someone to stand by while their loved one gets murdered and then getting in trouble for having some guts! 🙄

🚨 I'm low-key impressed by Darci Bass, tbh. Like, who needs a self-defense class when you can just go full-on Hulk mode on someone? 😂 The fact that she was able to grab that chain and slam it across his windshield shows she's not messing around. And can we talk about how frustrating is it for her to have to deal with all this drama after already losing her daughter to a murder? It's like, one wrong turn in court proceedings and now she has to face justice too.

But let's be real, the real question here is: what was Edgar thinking trying to disable his ankle monitor and go on the run? 🤔 I mean, didn't he know that would just make him look even more guilty? Anyway, I guess we can expect some serious trial drama now. Fingers crossed for justice! 💯

I'm literally shook by this whole thing 🤯... I mean, I get that mom's anger is REAL 💪, but assault charges? That's like, a whole different story 🤔. I feel for Livye Lewis' family and all, but did Bass really need to take matters into her own hands like that? 🤷‍♀️ It's like, I understand she wanted answers, but not at the cost of herself or others in the store.

And can we talk about how ridiculous it is that Edgar managed to get away with it for so long 🙄? Like, he had a history with Livye and her family, and yet no one suspected him of anything? That's some questionable detective work right there 👮‍♂️. I guess this case just goes to show that justice isn't always easy or straightforward 💔.

OMG did you know that I tried this crazy new ramen noodle recipe last night 🍜 it literally changed my life! I added these special spices from Japan and now I'm hooked 😂 anyway, back to the news... what's up with people just disappearing like that? Matthew Edgar just disables his ankle monitor and POOF he's gone 🤷‍♀️. Like, didn't he know there were cameras everywhere? 📸 Anyway, I feel for Livye's mom, that's some crazy stuff to deal with 😕 and now she's facing charges too... not fair 🙄

🤔 This is crazy... I mean, anyone would be so angry to see the person accused of killing their kid walking around free, right? But seriously, I'm surprised Darci Bass didn't just report the guy to the police when she knew he was out on bail. I get that she wanted to confront him and make her feelings clear, but maybe a more strategic approach would've gotten her the justice she was looking for... 🤷‍♀️

I do think it's messed up that Bass got charged with assault instead of Edgar, though. I mean, yes, she lost control and threw things at him, but he's the one who actually killed Livye! It just feels like the system is giving Bass a hard time for being angry and seeking justice... 😒

omg I'm still trying to wrap my head around this... like what would I do if someone hurt my little sister? 🤯 Darci Bass is literally insane for attacking Matthew Edgar like that, but at the same time I feel bad for her because she's been going through so much grief since Livye died. and why did she just go crazy on him in a convenience store?! was it really that hard to wait until her trial or something? 🤷‍♀️ I guess the police are gonna have to deal with some paperwork now too, since she got charged with assault... what's next? 😂

OMG, can't even believe what happened to that poor mom, Darci Bass 🤯😱! Like, she just lost her daughter, Livye, and then goes and confronts the guy who's supposed to be behind it all? Talk about emotional 💔! And to make matters worse, she gets charged with assault for defending herself? That doesn't seem right to me 😕. The justice system has got its work cut out in this case, especially when it comes to domestic violence cases 🤝. I mean, how do you even gather evidence against someone who's got a questionable alibi? 🚨 It's like, so not fair to the victims and their families #JusticeForLivye #DomesticViolenceAwareness #ConfrontingTheTruth

🤯 I'm still trying to wrap my head around this whole thing... like, I get it, a mom is going crazy with grief, but assault charges? That's just wild 🤪. And can we talk about how messed up the justice system is in cases of domestic violence? It's all over the place. Like, one minute Edgar's a suspect, and the next he's on the run... it's like they're playing a bad game of cat and mouse. 😒 And what really gets me is that Livye was only 19, you know? Her whole life ahead of her, and now she's just... gone 💔. I'm all for taking justice into one's own hands (see what I did there?), but at the same time, we gotta make sure we're not making things worse by, like, hurting the people already traumatized 😕. It's a super tough spot to be in, and I don't think we can just pat ourselves on the back for doing "justice" when it doesn't always feel that way 💔.

OMG this is crazy 😲! I'm literally shook by Darci Bass's actions. Like what would you do if someone killed your daughter?! 🤯 The fact that she took matters into her own hands and confronted the guy like that, it's just...wow. And to think he was trying to deny any involvement in Livye's death at first? I'm so angry on her behalf 💔. But at the same time, I get why Bass would want to take action. The justice system can be slow and messy. 🕰️ This whole case is just a huge mess, but Bass's actions are definitely a reminder that sometimes people just need to take control of their own lives. And sorry to say it, but Edgar kinda had it coming 😒.

I mean... think about it 🤔. This woman, Darci Bass, she's not just some ordinary person who reacts in a normal way to finding out her daughter was murdered. She takes matters into her own hands and confronts the guy responsible herself. That's like... have you ever felt so angry or hurt that you didn't know what else to do? It's like your emotions just take over, right?

And then there's the fact that she ended up getting charged with assault because of it 😕. Like, why wouldn't society just let her vent her anger a bit? I mean, she was just trying to hurt the guy who took away her daughter from her. But I guess in this case, it was all about not letting emotions get in the way of justice.

It's also got me thinking about how much we expect law enforcement to do when it comes to domestic violence cases. We expect them to catch these guys and bring 'em to justice, but what if they can't? What if the system is just too slow or too flawed? It's like... do we ever really get justice in these situations? 🤷‍♀️

🤔 This whole thing is super crazy! I don't think Bass was outta her mind for attacking Edgar, I mean, she had a right to be angry, but assault charges? That's pretty harsh. I'm guessing it was just a heat-of-the-moment kinda thing, you know? A mom's love knows no bounds, right? 😊

I do have to wonder though, how did Bass get out of jail? The media didn't mention anything about her being arrested or charged, so I guess that's not really the focus here. Anyway, it's good that they finally caught Edgar and his trial is moving forward, but I'm still thinking... 😐

🤯 I just can't imagine how Darci Bass must be feeling, dealing with that kind of pain and anger all over again. It's crazy to think about how she went from being a grieving mom to a suspect herself, just because she reacted the way any normal person would in that situation. Assault charges? That's just not fair. What was Edgar supposed to do, stand there and take it? I'm so glad he got caught eventually, but I feel for Bass - she deserves justice, not punishment. And what about Livye's family and friends? They must be still grieving, still waiting for answers... It's just another example of how the system can sometimes get it wrong 🤷‍♀️
