The Ashes: Joe Root hits masterful century before England sloppiness allows Australia to fight back in Sydney

England's Joe Root produced a masterclass hundred before his team's batting was marred by incompetence, allowing Australia to claw back into the Ashes series.

Root notched up his second century of this series with a strokey innings that featured 52 runs with Will Jacks. The Yorkshireman reached his milestone on day two in Sydney after opening partner Harry Brook edged out for just six more runs than he had scored overnight, and then was nicked off for an 11-ball duck.

Australia seamer Michael Neser had ended the England session with impressive figures of four wickets for 60 runs. His first victim was Zak Crawley, who fell to Jamie Smith, before Root came off a new ball that allowed him to score freely for a further 100 runs.

Neser's only real blemish on the day was being hit by Joe Root after having previously bowled him lbw and then caught Josh Tongue for a duck. His partner Jake Weatherald added just 21 more runs to his overnight total, before Ben Stokes trapped him lbw with a ball that nipped in.

Travis Head then continued Australia's momentum, posting his third fifty-plus score of the series after adding 105 with Marnus Labuschagne for their second wicket. The former posted his third fifties of this Ashes and added 21 to his overnight total before getting out at gully off Ben Stokes.

England seamer Matthew Potts struggled to contain Australia's counter-attack, giving away 58 runs in just seven overs. But the most dreadful dismissal came for England's Jamie Smith, who was hammered by pundits after gifting his wicket to part-time bowler Marnus Labuschagne. The Yorkshireman survived on 22 after clothing to cover but couldn't avoid a bouncer that straight shot to extra-cover.

The series now lies at 3-1 in favour of Australia with the final Ashes Test scheduled for next week, following their comfortable win at Brisbane and the loss at Perth and Adelaide.

Ugh I'm so bummed for England ๐Ÿค•! Joe Root was on fire though ๐Ÿ”ฅ, his century was pure magic โœจ. But seriously, that team's batting is just a mess ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. One day they're scoring tons, the next they're getting wiped out ๐Ÿ˜ฉ. And what's up with all these wickets? It's like they're giving them away for free ๐ŸŽ. Australia's got this series in the bag and I'm not sure England can turn it around ๐Ÿค”. The Aussie bowlers were on point ๐Ÿ“ˆ, especially Neser ๐Ÿ‘. Poor Joe Root, he was doing his thing but couldn't save the team from collapsing ๐Ÿ˜”. Bring on the final Ashes Test, I guess ๐Ÿคž!

man... aussies are just showing us all how it's done ๐Ÿ˜…. like root went out there and put on a show, but australia's team effort is what's got them back in this series. they're playing smart, not just relying on one or two players to save the day. we can learn from that, don't get caught up in individual performances, look at how the whole team's working together! and yeah, england's batting looks super weak atm ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ gotta step it up if they wanna turn this series around.

omg u guys can u believe joe root just put on a show ๐Ÿคฉ! he's literally the king of cricket right now! i swear his batting skills are getting better with every game ๐Ÿ™Œ. and that australia team is just so annoying ๐Ÿ˜’. i mean, michael neser should've bowled him lbw for sure ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ but root just makes everything happen ๐Ÿ’ช. ben stokes though ๐Ÿ‘Š he's my man! and josh tongue u r dead to me ๐Ÿ˜‚ if u didn't catch that duck then what r u even doing with ur life?! anywayz the ashes series is getting intense ๐Ÿ”ฅ can't wait for the final match next week ๐ŸŽ‰

Mega bummer for England! ๐Ÿค• Joe Root was on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, but it wasn't enough to stem the tide against Australia's top form ๐Ÿ’ช. That Aussie bowler Michael Neser is pure gold โšก๏ธ, no wonder he took 4 wickets for just 60 runs ๐Ÿค‘! But seriously, what was going through Jamie Smith's mind when he gave away his wicket so easily? ๐Ÿ˜‚ It was like a comedy of errors out there! The Ashes series is all but done and dusted ๐ŸŽ‰, can't wait to see the final Test next week โฐ. England needs to regroup and come up with a new strategy if they wanna make it interesting ๐Ÿ”!

OMG u guys what's goin on?? England's batting is a total mess rn. They cant even handle one day of Aussie pressure. I'm talkin 200 runs lost to some Aussie bowler who's not even top tier. It just shows how weak our team is right now ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ฅ๓ ฎ๓ ง๓ ฟ

And Root's innings was amazing but can we please get some consistency from the rest of the team? They cant just rely on one player to save them. It's like they're not even tryin ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. And that Australian bowler Neser is a beast! He's killin us with those yorkers ๐Ÿ˜จ

We need to get our heads together as a team and stop makin these silly mistakes. We cant just blame the Aussie team for takin our wickets, we gotta take responsibility ourselves ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

This Ashes series is such a joke ๐Ÿคฃ. One day England's batting is on point and Root gets his hundred, but then what? The rest of the team just can't even get out of their own way. I mean, 4 wickets for 60 runs by Neser? That's insane! And what's with Jamie Smith? He gives away his wicket to Labuschagne like it's no big deal ๐Ÿ˜‚. I need to see some stats or footage on this guy's struggles. Is he even a good bowler?

And the way Australia is piling up runs, 58 in just 7 overs from Potts? That's not normal ๐Ÿค”. And they're still only 3-1 down? It's all looking pretty bleak for England.

I'm calling BS on this series. Where are the experts? Where are the analysis videos? I need some real insight before I can even believe what's happening here ๐Ÿ˜’.

I THOUGHT AUSTRALIA WAS GONNA WIN THIS SERIES FOR SURE BUT ENGLAND JUST BANGED OUT A MASTERCLASS FROM JOE ROOT!!! HE PLAYED LIKE A PRO AND I WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE TO SEE IT IN PERSON!!! AUSTRALIA SEEMED TO BE IN CONTROL AFTER THAT, BUT ENGLAND'S BATTING COLLAPSED AT THE WRONG TIME AND NOW THEY'RE FIGHTING FOR EVERY RUN ๐Ÿคฏ๐Ÿ

omg what's going on with england's batting tho ๐Ÿคฏ they're literally giving australia all the opportunities to come back into the series and i'm just here for joe root's masterclass ๐Ÿ™Œ 52 runs with will jacks is a thing of beauty, but then you have harry brook getting out for like 6 more runs than he had last night... what happened? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ and then it gets even worse with jamie smith gifting his wicket to marnus labuschagne ๐Ÿ˜ฉ 58 runs in 7 overs is just a mess, man. australia's counter-attack is on fire though ๐Ÿ’ฅ i'm still rooting for england (pun intended), but they need to sort out their batting issues ASAP ๐Ÿคž

Ugh I'm still reeling from that one ๐Ÿ˜ฉ! I mean, England was on top with Joe Root's masterclass hundred but then it all fell apart. The way they dropped those wickets was just frustrating ๐Ÿคฏ. I mean, what was going through their heads? It felt like a complete turnaround after getting Australia back in the game... and now it looks like the series is slipping away from them ๐Ÿ’”. They need to get their act together for that final test or else it's gonna be a 4-1 loss ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

man this aussie team is on fire ๐Ÿ’ฅ they were so down but came back like that's what I love about cricket ๐ŸŽพ australia is really taking control now 58 runs in just seven overs by matthew potts is insane ๐Ÿคฏ i mean england had a chance with root scoring his second century but still couldn't stop the aussie counter-attack ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ travis head and marnus labuschagne are killing it ๐Ÿ‘Š can england somehow turn this around in the last test? ๐Ÿค”

Wow ๐Ÿคฉ Australia's comeback is on fire! Neser was pure class on day two, but that one-bouncer to Jamie Smith is just...ouch ๐Ÿ˜ฑ. You can't let your wicket gifted away like that, mate. Root was a thorn in the Aussies' side, and their batsmen just couldn't respond after his departure. England's batting collapse is just ridiculous at times ๐Ÿคฏ. They need to sort it out for the final test or it'll be 4-1 ๐Ÿ˜ณ.

I think its crazy how one player can single-handedly change the game like Joe Root did today ๐Ÿคฏ. He was on fire with those 152 runs against them and it really showed how unprepared they were to handle a strong batting line-up. Neser's performance was impressive though, but sometimes when you're doing well, you get caught out by one bad ball - that lbw LBW thing happened to him ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. The real question is what will England do about this series? Can they claw back or are they done for ๐Ÿ“Š.

๐Ÿค” England's Joe Root was on fire today ๐ŸŒŸ! He really showcased his skills as a batsman, playing an amazing innings that helped him score 100 runs. But it wasn't all smooth sailing for Team England... their batting was kinda messy after Root got out ๐Ÿ˜ณ. The way Australia clawed back into the series was crazy ๐Ÿ’ฅ!

I'm still trying to figure out what went wrong with Jamie Smith's dismissal ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. It looked like he gave away his wicket so easily! ๐Ÿ˜… But anyway, Australia really stepped up their game today and it's looking like they're gonna take this Ashes series 4-0 ๐Ÿ†. Not a great result for England, but still exciting to watch! ๐ŸŽ‰

Man, this series is like a perfect reflection of our politics - one team's on fire while the other's struggling to get back on track ๐Ÿค”. I mean, Joe Root's century was like a beacon of hope for England, but then they just got dismantled by their own teammates... it's like they couldn't even string two decent innings together ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ.

And Australia's counter-attack? That's like the opposition party bringing out all the big guns to knock down the incumbent government ๐ŸŽฏ. Ben Stokes and Travis Head are like the dynamic duo of Aussie cricket, just dominating everything in their path ๐Ÿ’ฅ.

But what really got me is how England's team management is just throwing their best bowlers at Australia's top order... it's like they're trying to win back-to-back elections by promising more of the same ๐Ÿ™„. Meanwhile, Australia's just playing smart cricket, adapting to the situation and taking calculated risks ๐Ÿ”ฉ.

This series is a reminder that in politics, as well as sports, momentum matters. If you can't build on your successes, you'll always be chasing catch-up. And right now, England's like they're trying to catch up with Australia... but it might be too late ๐Ÿ•ฐ๏ธ.

man i just caught up on this match ๐Ÿ˜‚ what a difference opening and closing partnerships make root was a total rockstar out there but australia's batsmen really struggled when they had chances to post big scores ๐Ÿค” labuschagne's batting is so underrated btw his game plan is always so clever ๐Ÿ’ก anyway can't believe england let it slip like that again

I'm low-key disappointed in England's batting display ๐Ÿค•. I mean, Joe Root was on fire ๐Ÿ”ฅ, but it felt like everyone else just got out of his way ๐Ÿ‘‹. Brook gets edged out for 6 more than he scored overnight? What's up with that?! ๐Ÿ˜‚ And then Jamie Smith gifts his wicket to Labuschagne... talk about a mental ๐Ÿคฏ moment. It's like they were all playing for the wrong team ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ. Australia's got them on the ropes now, and I'm not sure how England will claw back from this one ๐Ÿ˜ฌ.

the aussies r on fire rn ๐Ÿš€ they just kept pushing after england's batting collapse ๐Ÿ˜“ joe root put up a good show tho ๐Ÿคฉ but c'mon jamie smith u gotta do better than gifting ur wicket to labuschagne ๐Ÿ™„ anywayz, australia's momentum is hard 2 stop atm ๐ŸŒŠ can't wait 4 the final test ๐Ÿ†

OMG you guys, I'm low-key salty about this Ashes series lol ๐Ÿคฃ England's batting was straight up disastrous! Like, Joe Root puts on a masterclass hundred but then everyone else just can't seem to get it together ๐Ÿ˜‚. Harry Brook gets out for like 6 more than he scored the night before and Jamie Smith gives away his wicket to Marnus Labuschagne ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ. And don't even get me started on Matthew Potts, 58 runs in 7 overs is just insane ๐Ÿคฏ.

But despite all that, Australia's batting was still super solid ๐Ÿ™Œ Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne are having an amazing series! They're like the ultimate Ashes power couple ๐Ÿ’•. And Ben Stokes' wicket of Jake Weatherald was so clutch ๐Ÿ”ฅ. The series is now 3-1 in Australia's favour, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a last-minute England comeback ๐Ÿคž๐Ÿป Fingers crossed! ๐Ÿ˜…
