The Eternal Shame of Sue Perkins review – a Bake Off star basks in self-abasement

Sue Perkins' new stand-up special, "The Eternal Shame", promises a candid look at the former Bake Off star's life, but in reality, it delivers a show that is only occasionally as raw as its title suggests. The comedian attempts to strip away her public persona to reveal the humiliated person beneath, but ultimately settles for a series of lighthearted anecdotes that rarely touch on the theme.

The show starts off unevenly, with Perkins tackling topics such as middle age and fatigue in the entertainment industry, only to quickly veer off into unrelated territory. A segment about her allegedly cloned car registration comes across as more of a silly aside than a genuine exploration of shame, while another story about rescuing a pup on holiday feels like a laughable excuse for pride rather than a heartfelt admission.

Perkins' trademark wit and storytelling ability are still on full display, but they're applied to material that often feels shallow. A standout segment about her experience with a benign tumour that left her bedridden with symptoms reminiscent of a posh One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is where "The Eternal Shame" truly shines. Here, Perkins' protective facades are stripped away, revealing a more vulnerable side.

It's clear that Perkins is capable of producing some genuinely affecting material, but it's frustrating to feel that she's not fully committed to exploring her supposed shame. Instead, the show veers wildly from anecdote to anecdote, never quite settling on a cohesive tone or message. When it does get close to its target, however, "The Eternal Shame" delivers a glimpse of something more meaningful beneath Perkins' polished exterior – though that window into vulnerability is all too brief.

🤔 I was really looking forward to Sue's new stand-up special, but it kinda fell flat for me. I mean, she's got some amazing stories about her time on Bake Off, but like, where's the depth? 🍰 It feels like she's just messing around with some of these topics instead of really exploring them. Don't get me wrong, I love a good laugh, but when it comes to real talk, it felt kinda shallow to me 🤷‍♀️.

I did love that segment about her tumour tho 💉, though - it was like she dropped all the pretenses and just went for it. And let's be real, who hasn't been there, right? 😂 So yeah, I'm glad we got a glimpse of that vulnerability, even if it was brief 👀.

What did you guys think of the show? Did you feel like it lived up to the hype? 🤔

I'm kinda disappointed with Sue Perkins' new stand-up special, "The Eternal Shame". I mean, she's trying to be super honest and raw, but it just doesn't quite land for me 😐. I think she's got some amazing storytelling skills and her trademark wit is still on point, but the jokes and anecdotes that are all over the place feel like they're not really tackling the shame thing as deeply as I'd want them to.

The one segment that did really work for me was about this benign tumour she had, it felt so honest and vulnerable 🤕. But other times, it feels like she's just trying out some new material or sharing a funny story without really digging into what's beneath the surface. It's frustrating because I feel like she's got some amazing insights to share, but they're not really getting fully expressed.

I think maybe part of the problem is that Perkins is still so well-known and loved by people, it might be hard for her to make herself feel vulnerable on stage 🤷‍♀️. But even with that, I do think she's capable of producing something really special. With a bit more focus on exploring those feelings of shame and vulnerability, I think "The Eternal Shame" could've been a real masterpiece 😊.

I feel like I'm missing out big time on this one 🤷‍♀️... watched the whole thing and was really hoping for some real emotional depth but it just didn't deliver 💔. I mean, Sue's still got her signature charm and wit going strong but sometimes it feels like she's just being herself instead of stripping away all that armor to get real about her life 🤷‍♀️. The bits about the tumour were super compelling though - I loved how honest and raw she was in those moments 💕

I watched Sue's new stand-up special and I gotta say it was kinda meh 🤔♀️. She tries to be super raw but ends up being just lighthearted like her old Bake Off days #NotRawEnough 😒. The show jumps all over the place, tackling random topics like middle age and cloned car registration... what's up with that? 🤷‍♀️ It's not like it's gonna help her appear more vulnerable or anything #TooShallow.

But, I did love the part about the benign tumour - it was so honest and relatable 💕. She shows a side of herself we don't usually see, but then it's over too fast #VulnerabilityIsKey 🤗. I think she's got some great material in there, just needs to commit to exploring her 'shame' more 💪. Overall, it was decent, but not exactly life-changing for me 😐. Guess I'll be waiting for the next one to see if she can get her act together #StandupSpecial

I'm defo feelin' the same way about this stand-up special 😐🤔. Sue Perkins is a talented comedian, no doubt about it 🙌. But for me, "The Eternal Shame" just doesn't quite deliver on its promise of raw honesty 💁‍♀️. I mean, I love her anecdotes, don't get me wrong 🤣. They're always funny and engaging, but sometimes they feel like a bit of a distraction from the real message she's trying to convey 🚨.

The show's all over the place, if you ask me 🌪️. One minute it's about middle age and exhaustion in the entertainment industry ⏰, the next it's off on some random tangent 🤷‍♀️. I was really hoping for more depth and insight into Perkins' personal struggles 🤗. Like that segment about her benign tumour, though 🌟. That was a real highlight for me 💖.

It's like Perkins is torn between being her usual witty self 😂 and being vulnerable and honest 💔. And when she does manage to tap into that vulnerability, it's truly beautiful ❤️. But we don't get to stay in that space for too long 🌈. All in all, I'd say "The Eternal Shame" is a bit of a mixed bag 🎨. It's not a bad show by any means, but it could've been so much more 💪 #StandUpComedy #SuePerkins #MixedBag

I was expecting this from Sue Perkins 🤔... I mean, she's always been known for her quick wit and charm on TV, but I think we were sold a bit short with "The Eternal Shame". The show feels like it's playing to the crowds rather than really getting real about its title. That segment about the tumour though? Now that was some raw stuff 💉... we don't get enough of those moments where she drops her guard and shows us what she's truly dealing with.

omg i was def thinkin this show was gonna be way darker lol suz's always been hilarious but like... i dont know if she's really willing to get REAL about her stuff. i mean, the bit about her tumour tho was soooo good 🤕 it felt like she was finally bein honest with us for once. and her wit & storytelling skills r still on point, no denyin that! but some of the other topics just felt like filler, ya know? idk if she's tryin to be funny or tryin to be deep... either way its def not as raw as i thought itd b 🤷‍♀️

I gotta say, I'm a bit disappointed with Sue Perkins' new stand-up special, you know? It's like she's trying to be real and raw, but it feels like she's still got her foot on the gas pedal of image management 🤔. I mean, we're talking about someone who's been in the public eye for decades, and suddenly they want us to believe that they're just like everyone else? Come on, Sue! You've got a platform and you know how it works 💼.

I think what bothers me is that she's not really willing to tackle the tough stuff. I mean, we see this one bit about her benign tumour and it's like she's finally being vulnerable, but then it's like... yeah, okay, that was nice while it lasted 🤷‍♀️. It feels like she's giving us a glimpse of her humanity, but only for the sake of being human, you know? Where's the real shame in that? The real struggle? I want to see some real growth from Sue Perkins, not just some token nod to vulnerability 💯.

It's like, what are we supposed to take away from this show? That life is easy and problems can be solved with a good sense of humor? I don't buy it 🤑. We need someone who's going to speak truth to power, even if that means getting a little messy and uncomfortable 🔥. Sue Perkins, I'm looking at you!

I think Sue Perkins tried her best with this new stand-up special, but like, the title kinda gives you the wrong idea, you know? I was expecting some super raw and honest stuff, but it feels more like she's just playing around with funny stories 🤣. Don't get me wrong, she's still got that amazing wit and storytelling skill, but they're not really being used to tackle the deeper issues she was trying to address. The bits about her tumour, though... wow, that was a really powerful moment in the show 💔. It feels like Perkins is capable of going there, but sometimes I think she's holding back because it's too uncomfortable? Either way, "The Eternal Shame" could've been so much more impactful if she'd stuck with it for longer 🤷‍♀️.
