The Long Shoe by Bob Mortimer audiobook review – typically quirky cosy crime

In 'The Long Shoe', Matt Giles is having a rough patch. Lately, he's lost his job as a bathroom salesman, and to make matters worse, his girlfriend Harriet has left him after finding out he's been spending all their money on video games. A note from Harriet informing her decision only adds salt to the wound.

However, just when it seems like life can't get any worse for Matt, he receives an unexpected call from a stranger who offers him a job with a luxury apartment - an opportunity that makes him wonder if his luck is finally turning around. Maybe Harriet will come crawling back if she knows they have a fancy new home?

As the story unfolds, the narrative alternates between Matt's chapters, Arabella Weir's voice for their sharp-tongued neighbour Carol, and Diane Morgan's deadpan delivery as Harriet. Carol's penchant for flirting with younger men gets her into trouble, while Harriet is revealed to be the victim of a crime.

Despite some plot contrivances holding it back, 'The Long Shoe' is elevated by its surreal humour and sharp performances. The quirky touches abound, from Matt's cat Goodmonson to whimsical metaphors that add to the offbeat charm of the story.

Overall, this cosy crime novel is a fun, lighthearted listen - perfect for those looking for something entertaining but not too taxing. With its engaging cast of characters and witty banter, 'The Long Shoe' is sure to keep you hooked until the very end.

I gotta say, I was low-key rooting for Matt from the get-go... I mean, who hasn't been there right? Feeling like a total failure after losing the job & getting ghosted by your partner 🤦‍♂️. But, in all seriousness, I think what really drew me to this story is how it doesn't shy away from the messy parts of life. The characters are so well-written, especially Harriet - she's not just a 'drama queen' or whatever, but a real person who made some questionable choices. And that stranger offering Matt the job? Perfectly set up for a wild ride 😏. The cast is so lovable & quirky, I'm already looking forward to the next one...

I just finished listening to 'The Long Shoe' and I gotta say it's been a wild ride 🤪! Matt Giles's struggles are relatable, but at the same time, who can't resist those video games? 😂 And then that phone call from the stranger... game on! I loved how the story jumped around between different perspectives - Carol's sassiness had me laughing out loud, and Harriet's situation was so unexpected. The cast of characters is just so quirky and lovable. Goodmonson the cat stole my heart 🐱! The only thing that kept it from being a perfect listen for me was some plot points feeling a bit convenient, but honestly, I was too busy enjoying the ride to care 😅. All in all, 'The Long Shoe' is a fantastic, lighthearted mystery novel - can't wait to see what's next for Matt and company! 👍

I'm loving the vibes of this new crime novel "The Long Shoe" 🎧😄. I mean, who wouldn't want to listen to a story about a guy trying to turn his luck around after getting dumped and losing his job? The cast of characters sounds hilarious, especially that sassy neighbour Carol 🤣👵. And the fact that it's got a mix of surreal humour and sharp performances is just what I need to brighten up my day ☀️. I'm also curious about the plot twists - is Harriet really the victim of a crime? 🤔💡

OMG I'm so invested in Matt's story already 🤯! The twist with Harriet being a victim of crime is SO surprising 😱. And Carol's character has me dying laughing every time she flirts with those younger guys 😂. But what do you think about the video game addiction aspect? Is it too common or relatable for people who have spent way too much time playing games themselves? 🤔

🤔 I'm not really sure about this one... I mean, who spends all their money on video games? 😂 I get it, Matt's got some issues, but come on! Harriet sounds like a pretty understanding girlfriend, especially if she was spending her own cash too 🤑. And what's up with the "luxury apartment" job offer? Sounds like a dodgy deal to me 🤦‍♂️. But hey, I guess it's entertaining, and that cat Goodmonson is hilarious 😸! The story seems pretty lighthearted, so if you're looking for something fun to listen to while doing chores or whatnot, this might be the ticket 👍.

This whole thing just reminds me of the old saying "you can't put a price on happiness" - especially when it comes to relationships 🤑... I mean, Matt's been spending all their money on video games? That's like politicians who can't even balance their own budget! 😂 But seriously though, have you ever thought about how this relates to the whole class struggle? Is Harriet just a product of her upbringing or was she truly in control of her decisions? And what about Matt - is he just a victim of circumstance or has he been foolishly chasing materialism his whole life? 🤔

And then there's Carol, the sharp-tongued neighbour... isn't she a bit like our own politicians who love to speak their mind but ultimately serve their own interests? 💁‍♀️ It's all about perspective, right? The line between right and wrong gets blurred in this story, just like it does in real life. 👀

The classic tale of "Rags to Riches" - a story that echoes our society's obsession with social mobility. I mean, think about it, folks! If we just offer someone a chance, like this mysterious stranger did for Matt, can't they turn their life around? 🤑 But here's the thing, is it fair to say that those who are struggling, like Matt, should be given a second chance, especially if they're willing to put in the work? Or is it just about providing opportunities and letting the free market sort things out?

And what about our society's attitude towards women, particularly in situations where they've been wronged? Should we be holding them accountable for their choices, like Harriet did with Matt, or should we take a more nuanced approach? It's not about excusing bad behavior, but rather understanding the complexities of human relationships. The show "The Long Shoe" does a great job of exploring these themes, even if it is wrapped in some far-out plot twists 😂

I just finished listening to "The Long Shoe" and I gotta say it's a wild ride 🤯! I love how it's got this mix of dark stuff (like Harriet getting scammed) but also super funny moments, especially with Carol's sassy neighbor vibes 😂. The cast of characters is so quirky and lovable, even Matt, who's having a rough patch, feels kinda relatable 🤷‍♂️. And the voice acting? Wow! Diane Morgan's Harriet is super convincing as the victim, and I won't lie, I was rooting for her to get some justice 💁‍♀️. Overall, it's a fun listen, perfect for a road trip or something 😎.

I'm so done with Matt Giles right now 🤯! I mean, I feel bad for the guy, losing his job and all, but come on, spending all their money on video games? That's just poor life decisioning 😂. And to think he was wondering if Harriet would come crawling back because of a fancy new apartment... please 🙄. I need to know what happened to her, though - the crime thing sounds super intriguing 🕵️‍♀️.

And can we talk about Carol for a sec? Her flirting is on 10, but also super cringeworthy 😳. I love how she's got this sharp-tongued voice, but sometimes it feels like she's more annoying than funny 😒. And the writing is so good, but some parts feel like they're stretching it a bit too far 🤷‍♀️.

Overall, though, 'The Long Shoe' sounds like a super entertaining listen. I love that it's got this quirky charm and witty banter - perfect for a lazy day or road trip 🚗. Just be prepared to laugh at Matt's misfortune and maybe roll your eyes at Carol 😂👎

I'm really over how everyone's going on about this new show... it sounds super cheesy to me 🙄. I mean, a guy who gets kicked out of his relationship for playing too many video games and then thinks he can just woo his ex back with some fancy new pad? Give me a break! 😒 The plot seems super contrived to me - "surprise" job from a stranger? Please 🤦‍♂️. And what's up with the neighbour, Carol, being some kind of flirtatious weirdo? I'm not buying it 😏. But hey, if you're into that sorta thing, go for it... I'll stick to something else, lol 👎

you know what struck me about this whole story? it's like, we're living in a world where people are so desperate for a sense of security and status that they'll do just about anything to get it... matt's lost his job, spent all their money on video games, and now he's hoping harriet will come crawling back if she knows they've got a fancy new home 🤑 but what does that really say about us? are we just trying to fill this void inside ourselves with material possessions and superficial things?

and then there's the whole thing with carol and her flirtatious ways... it's like, people are so caught up in their own desires and insecurities that they're willing to hurt others to get what they want 💔 but what about the people who care about them? don't they deserve some consideration too?

anyway, i guess what i'm trying to say is that 'the long shoe' might be a fun, lighthearted listen on the surface, but it's also got some pretty deep themes running beneath the surface...

OMG I'm so with Matt on this one 🤣 like who hasn't spent all their cash on video games at some point lol I feel bad for Harriet tho, but also kinda root for her getting revenge and finding out she's not the only one who's been played 😏. And I love how it's not a super dark or serious show, just a funny and quirky listen that makes you wanna snuggle up with a cuppa ☕️ Matt's cat Goodmonson is literally the best thing since sliced bread 🐱😹

omg i am literally dyin over this new series!!! 😍 The way they've woven together Matt's struggles with Harriet's betrayal is so relatable i feel like im gonna cry while laughing at the same time lol Carol though 🙄 she's such a sass queen and her interactions with Matt are everything. And can we talk about Diane Morgan's performance as Harriet? 😩 it's like she nails every single emotion...i need to hear more of this! 💖

I'm totally loving how surreal this show gets! The cat's name, Goodmonson, btw 😂🐈, is already giving me life. And can we talk about Matt's video game addiction being a major plot point? Like, what's next? Will he get his gaming chair? 💥 But seriously, the cast of characters here is so well done. I love how Carol's character adds this whole new layer to the story with her flirtatious antics 🤣 and Harriet... poor girl 😔. The author must have really nailed the voice for each character because it feels like they're all just living their best lives (except Matt, of course). Anyway, what did you guys think of 'The Long Shoe' so far?

just watched that one, pretty wild ride 😂. think matt's struggles are super relatable tho, we've all been there with bad decisions & toxic relationships 🤦‍♂️. but the way it turns around at the end is just crazy 💥. also love how they don't take themselves too seriously, just a fun listen 👍

OMG I'm so glad I just heard about this new podcast! 🤩 The plot sounds like a real-life drama, but the surreal humour has me intrigued 😂. I love how it balances lightheartedness with some deeper themes - it's not too heavy or intense, which is perfect for a relaxing listen during your daily commute ⏰. And can we talk about the cast of characters? 🤔 Matt, Harriet, Carol... they all sound like such unique and quirky individuals! 💖 I'm definitely adding this to my playlist and giving it a go 👍

I just finished listening to 'The Long Shoe' 😂👠 and I gotta say it's been a wild ride! Matt Giles is definitely a lovable loser 🤦‍♂️, and I ship him and Harriet from day one 💕 (even though she ends up leaving him for reasons I get 🙄). The supporting characters, like Carol, are hilarious too 😂 - her flirtatiousness had me LOLing! 😆 But what really gets me is how the story tackles real issues, like Harriet's victimhood, without making it too heavy 🤗. Overall, 'The Long Shoe' is a super enjoyable listen that's perfect for a relaxing commute or a road trip 🚗🎧
