The Rip review – Ben Affleck and Matt Damon tear through flashy Netflix bro thriller

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon star in a high-octane, R-rated thriller on Netflix that pays homage to the big-screen action flicks of yesteryear. The film, titled 'The Rip', follows two Miami officers as they uncover a hidden stash of $20 million in a suburban home, prompting a tense game of cat and mouse over who can be trusted with the prize.

As expected from the pairing of two Oscar-winning actors at their peak, there's undeniable chemistry between Affleck and Damon as they take on lead roles that would typically go to action heroes like Gerard Butler or Jason Statham. They bring an air of gravitas to their characters' backstories, grounding the film in drama, even if some of their signature 'bro-y' theatrics feel slightly forced.

Supporting the duo are a talented cast, with notable turns from Teyana Taylor, Steven Yeun, and Catalina Sandino Moreno. While the women's roles are somewhat one-dimensional, they bring much-needed tension to an otherwise action-packed narrative that leans heavily on the leads.

Director Joe Carnahan is in his element here, delivering a film that feels like a love letter to '80s and '90s action cinema. The pacing is relentless, with a series of high-stakes set pieces that are both thrilling and occasionally crass. While the mystery at its core never quite lives up to its promise, Carnahan's expertise in doling out pulpy thrills shines through.

The Rip feels like a product of its time – a film that prioritizes spectacle over substance, with an emphasis on 'four-beers-in' entertainment rather than lasting cinematic impact. It won't be for everyone, but fans of the genre will find plenty to enjoy in this propulsive, if forgettable, thrill ride.

Ultimately, The Rip is a Netflix original that feels like it was made for this particular moment – when prestige films have all but disappeared from theaters and audiences are left with an appetite for something big-screen. With its A-list cast and Carnahan's direction, it's no surprise the film has been greenlit, even if it won't be remembered come next awards season.

idk why ppl r saying its forgettable lol i just watched it last nite w/ my bf and we were on the edge of our seats the whole time! ben & matt chemistry is REAL idc if the mystery didnt work out they stole every scene 🤣and those supporting actors? lowkey amazing, esp teyana taylor she brought so much sass to her role i feel like it was made for this particular moment tho, when ppl just wanna watch a big ol' action flick on netflix and not worry about awards season lol

I'm loving this Ben Affleck and Matt Damon collaboration so far! The chemistry between them is undeniable and they bring a level of gravitas to their roles that's awesome. I mean, who doesn't love a good old-school action flick with some drama thrown in? The cast is solid too, especially Teyana Taylor - she's always on point. The director, Joe Carnahan, is a master of delivering pulpy thrills and it shows here. The pacing is relentless, like a video game on steroids! 🤯 I'm not sure if I'd call it a masterpiece or something that'll be remembered for years to come, but as a guilty pleasure it's definitely got me hooked 💥

omg u guys i just watched 'The Rip' on Netflix & im hella hyped!! ben affleck & matt damon are literally unstoppable as the leads they bring so much chemistry to the screen its like a big ol plate of popcorn for ur eyes 🍿👊 but like, idk if i'd watch this again anytime soon it feels like a wild ride, but also kinda formulaic? 🤔 anyway, joe carnahan is a genius for pulling off that 80s action vibe & the cast is pretty fire too 💥 cant wait to see what other thrillers they drop next!

I gotta say, I was expecting more depth from this flick 🤔. While Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are awesome as always, their 'bro-y' moments do feel forced at times...I mean, can't we have some nuance in our action heroes? And yeah, the women's roles were pretty one-dimensional - it's like they just checked off the box for token diversity 🙄. The whole film feels like a love letter to old-school action flicks, but sometimes I think that's more nostalgia than actual craft. I mean, can't we have some substance behind the spectacle? But hey, if you're into that 'four-beers-in' entertainment vibe, I guess it'll be right up your alley 🍺👍. Still, not sure how this one holds up in the long run...

I'm so not impressed 🤔. I mean, another overhyped Netflix original that's all about style over substance 🎥. The Rip feels like just another generic action flick with some A-list names thrown in for good measure 🤑. It's got the usual formula - high-octane action, a bunch of explosions, and two leading men trying to prove they're still relevant ⚔️. And don't even get me started on how predictable it is 😴. I mean, come on, a hidden stash of cash in a suburban home? How original 🙄. Anyway, if you're into that sorta thing, I guess The Rip might be the movie for you... but only if you want to waste your time on something forgettable 🚮.

OMG, I just watched this one on Netflix 🍿💥 and I'm still reeling from the experience!!! Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are absolute perfection as these two Miami officers! Their chemistry is REAL 💕 and they totally bring that A-list vibe to their roles 🤩. And can we talk about Joe Carnahan's direction? 🙌 The man knows how to deliver some serious thrills and spills 🎢💥. Sure, it might not be the most complex film, but when you're having this much fun, who cares? 😂 It's like a love letter to old-school action flicks – I'm totally here for that nostalgia trip! 💖 And let's give it up for the talented cast, especially Teyana Taylor and Steven Yeun 🙌. Not bad at all for a Netflix original! 👍

omg i think this movie sounds so intense!!! 🤯 i love how ben affleck and matt damon are teaming up again, they always bring that chemistry to their roles! 😎 but yeah, the film does feel like a throwback to old school action flicks - in a good way? i'm kinda curious about it now, especially since joe carnahan is directing... he's got some awesome experience with pulpy thrillers. 🤪 and omg, $20 million hidden stash sounds like a plot twist goldmine! 💸

🎥 The Rip feels like a time capsule of '80s and '90s action cinema, with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon delivering solid performances as they navigate this high-stakes cat-and-mouse game 🕵️‍♂️. While it's not perfect – the women's roles could've been fleshed out more and some of the thrills feel a bit crass 🤢 – Joe Carnahan's direction shines through, delivering a film that's unapologetically pulpy and fun 💥. It's like Netflix is trying to fill the void left by prestige films' decline at the box office 🍿, and honestly, The Rip delivers on its promise of big-screen entertainment. If you're a fan of the genre, you'll love it – even if it won't leave a lasting impression after the credits roll 😊

🤯 just watched The Rip on Netflix 📺 and I'm still reeling from that intense 2hr thriller ride 😱 Matt Damon and Ben Affleck are absolute boss 👊 bringing the heat to their characters' backstories 💔 especially Steven Yeun's role 🤠 he totally brought the drama 😈 but Teyana Taylor and Catalina Sandino Moreno felt a bit one-dimensional 🙅‍♀️👯‍♀️ director Joe Carnahan is the master of high-octane thrills 🔥 pacing is relentless, set pieces are insane 🚀 but some scenes feel super crass 😳 still, it's an absolute blast for fans of 80s/90s action flicks 💪
