The Storm Whale review – touching tale of a little leviathan's surprise visit

A Little Leviathan's Heart-Warming Visit to the Seaside

The Storm Whale, an adaptation of Benji Davies' 2013 picture book, has arrived on stage, bringing with it a touching tale of a young boy named Noi and his heartwarming encounter with a stranded whale. The production, directed by Matt Aston, skillfully conveys the theme that solitude need not mean loneliness.

The story revolves around Noi's lonely days spent waiting for his father to return from fishing. His life takes an unexpected turn when he befriends a washed-up whale, and together they form an unusual bond. While the script is often poignant, it sometimes falls flat with repetitive and solemn dialogue that may test young audiences' attention.

However, the production shines in its imaginative flights of fancy, such as Noi's vivid description of what strawberries might taste like if he licked a lighthouse. The use of puppetry is also noteworthy, particularly the endearing whale puppet crafted by Keith Frederick, which captures the sense of wonder with its quivering tail and glinting eyes.

The creative team has done an excellent job in bringing the story to life through Hayley Del Harrison's choreography, Julian Butler's lively music, and Jason Salvin's lighting design. The tempest that washes up the whale is beautifully rendered, accompanied by stirring sea shanties.

While the show remains a heartwarming tale of friendship, it could benefit from wilder humour and more adventurous spirit to truly make it stand out. Nevertheless, The Storm Whale is a delightful production that will captivate young audiences with its poignant story and creative staging, making it an ideal choice for children aged four to eight.

I just saw this play and I gotta say, the puppetry was mind blown 🤯! Keith Frederick's whale puppet was so adorable, I almost wanted to take it home 🐳❤️. But what really got me was how the show tackled loneliness in a way that felt super relatable, especially for kids who might be feeling left out or struggling with quiet days at home. The music and lighting were also top notch - I loved how they used sea shanties to create this stormy vibe 🌊🎶. Maybe next time they could add some more laughs and excitement, but overall, it was a super heartwarming show that left me feeling all the feels 😊.

Ugh, I was really looking forward to watching this show, but the puppetry design is so last season 🤣. I mean, a quivering tail and glinting eyes? Really? Can't they do better than that? 🙄 And don't even get me started on the music – it's just a bunch of generic sea shanties strung together without any real flair. 😴 I get it, the show is supposed to be heartwarming, but can't they bring some actual excitement to the table? 🤔 The Storm Whale feels like a missed opportunity to be truly magical and engaging for young audiences... *sigh* 😐

I just watched this show "The Storm Whale" and I gotta say it's super cute 🐳❤️! The story about the boy Noi and his whale friend is so heartwarming and reminds me of my own childhood days at the beach 🏖️. What really stood out for me was the puppetry, oh man it was like having a real-life whale in front of me 🤯! But what I think would've made it even better is if they added some more funny moments to balance out the sadder parts 😂. Still, I loved how creative and imaginative the whole production was! The music and lighting were so cool too 💡🎶. Overall, it's a great show for kids aged 4-8, I think my little ones would've loved it 👧🏼🐳

omg 😍 I just watched this show and i'm literally crying 🤧 the puppetry is insane!! Keith Frederick's whale design is so adorbs 🐳👀 but yeah, some parts felt a bit too sappy for me 🙄 it's like, come on kids, let's have some fun 😂 wilder humour would've taken it to the next level but overall, i loved it 💖

I'm not sold on this one 🤔... I mean, don't get me wrong, the story's sweet enough, but I feel like it's a bit too 'on the nose' with its whole loneliness vs isolation theme. And can we talk about how predictable the plot is? 😴 I'd have loved to see some more unexpected twists and turns to keep me engaged. The visuals are definitely something else though - that whale puppet is adorable 🐳! But, in all honesty, I think it's a bit of a 'meh' production. Not bad by any means, but not exactly blowing anyone away either 😐

I just saw this show about a kid who befriends a whale 🐳🌊 and I gotta say, it's super cute! The puppetry is adorable 🤗, especially the whale one! It was like having a little friend on stage 😊. But yeah, some parts felt a bit slow 🕰️, like when Noi talks about his life and stuff. I wish they added more excitement to it 🎉, but overall it's still really sweet ❤️. The sea shanties were so cool too 🌊💨! It would be awesome if they could add some funnier moments to make it even more engaging 😆. Still, I think the show is great for little kids 👧🏻👦🏻 and their parents will love it too 👫!

I just watched this adorable show called "The Storm Whale" 🐳🌊 and I gotta say, it's such a sweet story about a boy named Noi who befriends a whale that washed up on the beach 🤗! The puppets are so cute, especially the one for the whale - it's got this adorable quivering tail and sparkly eyes 🎨! The music is also really fun, like those sea shanties they sing 🌊🎶. But, I think the show could be more exciting if they added some more laughs and thrills 😂🤩. Still, it's a great choice for little kids aged 4-8, and it teaches them that even when you're feeling lonely, friendship can come in unexpected ways ❤️!

omg i just watched this show w/ my niece n she's literally gonna die from the cuteness of that whale puppet 🐳💖 i mean i was a bit skeptical at first 'cause the dialogue can get pretty sappy, but the puppetry n choreography n lighting are EVERYTHING 🎭🌊 what really got me tho is how they show Noi's loneliness isn't just about being alone, it's about feeling like u don't fit in w/ the world 🤯 anyway, if u have kids aged 4-8, get 'em to watch this ASAP

🌊 I'm so here for the Storm Whale's quirky charm! The puppets are literally adorable 🐳❤️, especially that quivering tail on Keith Frederick's whale puppet - it's too cute! But yeah, some parts of the script feel a bit meh... like Noi's constant loneliness is kinda boring. Can't they've added more humor and excitement to balance out the sadder moments? Still, I think kids aged 4-8 will love it 🎉! The creative team did an amazing job bringing this tale to life - Hayley Del Harrison's choreography is insane 💃, Julian Butler's music is so uplifting, and Jason Salvin's lighting design is stunning!

🌊 I gotta say, the puppets in this show are SO CUTE 🤩, especially the whale one! Keith Frederick did an amazing job on that. I love how the production uses puppetry to bring Noi's imaginative world to life. The music is catchy too, but I can see what you mean about it being a bit too serious at times 😐. Adding some more humor and wild adventures would've made the show truly unforgettable 🌈. Still, for a heartwarming tale of friendship that'll resonate with young minds, The Storm Whale's a solid choice 👍

omg i just watched the storm whale stage show w/ my niece n it was SOOO adorable!!! 🐳🌊 i loved how the puppetry was on point esp that whale puppet it looked so real n the choreography by hayley del harrison was so cool! 🤩 but idk if its really for me lol i mean its def cute but its like 45 mins long n not exactly laugh out loud funny 😂 maybe they can add some more action packed scenes or comedic relief? still, its a great choice for kids aged 4-8 👧🏻🎭

I took my kiddo to see this show and I gotta say, the whale puppet had me in tears too! 😊 It's so nice to see a story that shows you don't have to be alone even when things feel really tough. My little one was totally absorbed in Noi's adventures with the whale and loved all the silly parts, like the strawberry tasting bit 🍓👅. The stage design was also super cool, I loved how they used light and sound to bring the stormy sea to life ⛈️. A couple of parts felt a bit slow for my restless kid, but overall we had an amazing time! 👫

I went to see this show last weekend with my kiddo & I gotta say, the puppetry was insane 🤯! That whale pup had me feeling all the feels 😊. I loved how they used movement & music to bring the story to life, especially that part where Noi describes strawberries - it was like I was right there with him 🍓🌟. But yeah, some parts felt a bit slow for my little one's attention span... maybe add some more laughs or action? still, 8/10 would watch again, would def recommend! 👍

I just saw the most beautiful puppet show with my kid 🐳🌊 The whale puppet was so cute, I almost cried! I loved how they used music and lighting to bring the stormy sea to life, it was like we were right there with Noi and his friend 😊. I'm a bit sad that some parts felt a little slow, but overall it was such a magical experience for my little one ❤️. Maybe next time they'll add more fun and adventure, but for now, I'm just happy we got to share this special moment together 🌟

man i just watched this show with my nephew and it really made me think about how we perceive loneliness... like noi's life seems so bleak at first but then he finds this whale and suddenly his days are all about him and his new friend 🐳🌊. it's like our minds can make us feel alone even when we're surrounded by people. the puppetry was insane tho 😱 i mean who makes a whale puppet that looks like it's gonna cry? anyway, it's clear they put a lot of love into this show and that shines through, but yeah maybe some more humour would've been nice to balance out the seriousness... still, it's def worth checking out if you're looking for something sweet and inspiring 😊

🐳 I'm not sure about the show being perfect but i think the puppetry is 🔥👏 especially that whale puppet it's so lovable! i mean who wouldn't want a best friend like Noi and his whale buddy 🤗? anyway, what really stood out for me was how they made the tempest look like it came straight from nature...that stormy lighting design was ⛈️ wow. the music too was catchy 🎵. maybe they could've added some more fun moments to keep it wilder but still, it's a great show for little ones 👧🏻👦

🌊 just watched the show with my niece and she absolutely loved it! I think the puppetry was amazing 🤩 and Hayley Del Harrison's choreography was so whimsical. But honestly, what struck me most was how much the show makes you feel - all warm and fuzzy inside 😊. The set design was also incredible, loved the lighthouse detail 🏠. Maybe a bit slow for some younger ones, but overall a great experience 🎉

omg u guys i just watched the storm whale & i'm still reeling from the experience 🤯 it's like they took a perfectly good story & turned it into a masterpiece 🎨 noi's journey is so beautifully heartbreaking, i felt every single one of his emotions 😭 especially when he befriends that whale, i was literally crying along with him 💔 but what really got me was the puppetry tho, that whale's eyes are EVERYTHING 👀 keith frederick u r a genius 🙌 and can we talk about hayley del harrison's choreography tho? it's like they took this simple story & turned it into a wild adventure 🌪️ i mean, who comes up with 'strawberries might taste like lighthouses'? genius, that's who 💡 anyway, the only thing i'm gonna say is that maybe, just maybe, they could've added a bit more oomph to the humour & the adventure vibes 🤔 but overall, it's still a total masterpiece 👏

I think the show sounds really cute! 🐳😊 I love how it's about friendship and not being lonely even when you're alone. The puppetry looks amazing too! 👀 The only thing that would make me want to watch it more is if there were some funnier parts - maybe a silly whale dance or two? 😄 But overall, it sounds like a great show for kids! 👍
