Trump says Xi assured him China won’t take action on Taiwan

US President Donald Trump has revealed that Chinese leader Xi Jinping assured him during their meeting last week that Beijing will not attempt to unify Taiwan with mainland China as long as he remains in office.

According to Trump, during their face-to-face meeting for the first time in six years, the issue of Taiwan "never even came up". The conversation instead focused on US-China trade tensions. In an interview with CBS's 60 Minutes program that aired on Sunday, Trump stated that Xi has openly said China would not take action on Taiwan while he is president because they are aware of the consequences.

When asked if he would order US forces into action if China moved militarily on Taiwan, Trump demurred, saying that "you'll find out" if it happens and adding that Xi understands the answer to that.

The 1979 Taiwan Relations Act, which governs US relations with Taiwan, does not require the US to intervene militarily but makes it policy for the US to ensure Taiwan has resources to defend itself and prevent any unilateral change of status by Beijing.

However, Trump's comments have raised concerns about the potential implications of his meeting with Xi. US officials have long been worried about the possibility of China using military force against Taiwan, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.

Wow 🤯, I'm kinda surprised Xi Jinping would make such a deal without pushing for reunification... Interesting 👀 how Trump seems to be downplaying the whole situation and keeping mum on whether he'd intervene if China went all in on Taiwan 😏. It's like he thinks Xi's word is law now? 🙄

I'm a bit uneasy about this whole thing 🤔. I mean, think about it - we're basically telling our allies that they don't need to worry because the other guy won't bother them... yet 😬. What's to say Xi Jinping changes his mind after he leaves office? It feels like we're putting all our eggs in one basket here and hoping for the best 🥚. And what about the Taiwan Relations Act - is it just a nice-to-have or do we actually have a plan in place if things go south? I wish Trump would give us some real clarity on this instead of just saying "you'll find out" 😐.

This is a pretty interesting development 🤔... I mean, it's one thing to think that China won't take any action on Taiwan while Trump's in office, but what happens when he's not? 🕰️ It's like saying "we'll leave the lights on for you" and then turning them off 🚫. I'm not sure if I trust Xi's word on this one... what if there's a change of power or something? 🤷‍♂️ It's also weird that Trump didn't push harder on this issue, considering how much it affects US interests in the region 🌎. Anyway, hope China keeps its promise ⚖️ and we can all sleep better tonight 😴...

Just saw this and I'm like what did we just miss lol? So Xi Jinping is saying he won't touch Taiwan while Trump's in office? That sounds like a pretty big deal but at the same time it feels like a classic diplomatic move 🤔. I mean, who wants to risk a confrontation with the US right now? China needs trade with us and they know it. But on the other hand, this raises so many questions... what's the real reason behind Trump's comments? And what does this mean for Taiwan's future? It feels like we're just being fed a line of reassurance here 🙃

🤔 Trump just spilled all the tea and it looks like Xi Jinping is not a fan of taking down Taiwan's door... for now 😅 "Diplomacy has made me an expert at patience." - Theodore Roosevelt

I'm not sure if we should be celebrating this "diplomatic breakthrough" or having our eyebrows raised. It sounds like Trump just gave China a free pass to do whatever they want with Taiwan as long as he's in charge 🤷‍♂️

I'm a bit confused about what's going on with China and Taiwan. So they're saying that if Trump stays in office, China won't try to take over Taiwan right? 🤔 But at the same time, there are some people who think this might be just a trick, like China is waiting for an opportunity to strike when no one's looking. It sounds like it could all go either way... I don't know if I trust what Xi Jinping said to Trump or not. Can someone explain it in simpler terms, please? 🤷‍♂️

🤔 this is a total game-changer for trade relations between the 2 superpowers... but what's really going on here? why did xi never even mention taiwan during their meeting 🤷‍♂️? it feels like trump got played somehow... and what's with him dodging the question about military intervention? either be upfront or not say anything at all... but "you'll find out" isn't exactly reassuring 💁‍♀️.

omg u wont bliev whats goin on w/ china & taiwan 🤯 so like trump just had a meetup w/ xi jinping and apparently xi said nothin bout unifying taiwan w/ mainland china 4 the rest of his term lol what kinda move is that tho? im thinkin its more like china dont wanna risk a war w/ us rn... but at the same time, u got these ppl in washington who r worried sick about china takin military action on taiwan 🤔 like, what's the diff between them?? anywayz, i guess this is good news 4 taiwan, but we'll c how it all plays out 💯
