Trump to pardon ex-Puerto Rico governor Vázquez in campaign finance case, official says

President Trump is poised to grant a pardon to Wanda Vázquez, the former governor of Puerto Rico who pleaded guilty last year to campaign finance charges. According to a White House official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Trump intends to issue a pardon in Vázquez's case, which has been pending since August.

Vázquez, a Republican aligned with the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, is accused of accepting a promise of a campaign contribution that was never received. Her plea deal included agreeing to plead guilty and cooperating with investigators. However, prosecutors had sought a harsher sentence of one year behind bars, which Vázquez's attorneys argued was unjustified.

The decision to pardon Vázquez has been met with criticism from Puerto Rican politicians, including Representative Pablo José Hernández, who condemned the move as "impunity that protects and fosters corruption." Hernández claimed that the pardon would undermine public integrity and shatter faith in justice.

Vázquez's case involves allegations of bribery and a scheme involving former FBI agent Mark Rossini and Venezuelan banker Julio Martín Herrera Velutini. Authorities say that Vázquez demanded the resignation of Puerto Rico's Office of the Commissioner of Financial Institutions in exchange for support in her campaign, which allegedly led to her appointment of a new commissioner.

The pardon is expected to be Trump's first major move on his final day in office. It is unclear when exactly the pardon will be issued, but it has already been reported by CBS News as part of a pattern of pardons that Trump plans to issue before leaving office.

I don't get why Trump is doing this 🤔. I mean, it's like he's trying to make her look like a victim or something. Wanda Vázquez was definitely in the wrong, accepting that bribe and all. It just shows how corrupt some politicians can be, you know? Like, if she wanted to be seen as clean, she shouldn't have taken the money in the first place 🤑. And now this pardon is gonna make everyone think that justice doesn't matter in America anymore. I'm so worried about the message it sends to others who might want to take a shortcut like her 💔. It's just not cool, man.

🤔 I'm just thinking... if Trump gives a pardon to Vázquez, does that mean she's not going to jail? 🚫 Like, what happens to the money or whatever that was supposed to be in exchange for her support? 😕 And isn't it weird that Trump's pardoning his buddy's friend's wife and stuff? 🤷‍♀️ I mean, I'm all for people getting second chances, but shouldn't there be some kinda public explanation about why this pardon is happening? 📊 Can someone explain how pardons work again? 😅

its pretty wild that trump thinks he can just pardon wanda vazquez like shes above the law lol 🤣 i mean dont get me wrong vazquez did plead guilty and all but come on she was supposed to do some hard time for corrupting puerto rican politics meanwhile trump is trying to send a message that he can just let people off scot free if theyre his buddies. its all about politics and who's got the power in this case 🤝

just another example of how politics and power play out 🙄. someone who pleaded guilty already seems like they're getting off easy. think about all the other people who've gone through similar situations... not just puerto rico, either. what's being protected here? the system or the people in power?

🤔 so like what's going on here? Trump is gonna give Wanda Vázquez a free pass for some campaign finance stuff and everyone's all like "no way, this is corrupt" 🚫 i get why they're upset, but at the same time it seems like Vázquez was already saying sorry by pleading guilty and cooperating... isn't that kinda the thing you do when you break the law? 🤷‍♀️ what's the deal with Trump's pardon spree, is this just a way to go out with some bang or are there more surprises in store? 🤫

omg can u believe this?! so trump is gonna grant a pardon 2 wanda vazquez like what did she even do? accepting a campaign contribution that never came thru? and now ppl r saying it's just another example of corruption and impunity... i mean, hernandez said it straight up - "impunity that protects and fosters corruption" 🙄👎. and ain't this the kinda thing we didn't need more of? like, isn't there already enough distrust in gov? anywayz, looks like trump's makin a big move on his last day out tho... can't say i'm surprised tho

the pardon for wanda vazquez just came out and ppl r really divided about it 🤔... some say it's justice for her having served time, while others think it's an abuse of power & undermines faith in gov 🙅‍♂️... i dont know what to think, but maybe the fact that she pleaded guilty & cooperated with investigators should count 4 something? 🤷‍♀️ still not sure if trump is doing us a solid or just trying 2 avoid controversy before leaving office ⏰

🤔 I'm thinking this pardon thingy is gonna be super awkward for Trump's legacy. Like, what if Vázquez takes the heat and spills all the tea on Mark Rossini and Julio Martín Herrera Velutini? That would be a major scandal right under his nose! 🤯 Also, it feels like a pretty calculated move to try and save face before he leaves office. Newsflash: pardoning someone who's guilty doesn't exactly win you friends among the public... 🙅‍♂️

Ugh I'm getting so frustrated with POTUS and his pardoning spree 🙄💔 He's like "oh I know you did something bad, let me just erase it all and you're good to go!" Meanwhile, Puerto Rico is still struggling after Hurricane Maria and this is what we get? 🌪️ A slap in the face. I'm not saying Vázquez didn't do anything wrong, but come on! She's a politician, she should know better than to play with fire 🔥. And now she's just gonna waltz out of prison with a big ol' pardon and people are gonna be like "oh well, corruption is just part of politics" 🤷‍♀️ Newsflash: it's not! I'm all for second chances, but this feels so unfair 😐. I'm watching from the sidelines and I gotta say, I'm not impressed with Trump's legacy on this one 👎

Ugh I'm so divided about this... 🤔 Like, on one hand I get why Vázquez made some questionable moves, and if she really did do what the prosecutors say she did, then yeah I guess a pardon might be fair, but at the same time it's like Trump is basically setting a precedent for just, I don't know, being able to waltz out of trouble whenever you want? 🙄 It's not exactly reassuring to hear him's gonna start handing out pardons left and right on his last day in office...

I'm not surprised about this one... Trump's always had a way with words and some people just love him for it 🤷‍♂️. I mean, think about it - Wanda Vázquez is a Republican, which means she's probably got some good connections on the inside. And if Trump really wants to make a statement, then maybe this pardon thing is gonna be big news. But to me, it just feels like more of the same old politics... you do something for someone, and then they do something for you. It's all pretty murky if you ask me 🤔.

🤔 I don't get why this is even happening, you'd think after she pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate, a pardon would've been the last thing on her mind... or should I say, Trump's mind lol? 🙄 Anyway, it just feels like another example of how politics can be super messy. Like, if she was guilty, why not face the consequences? And what's with all these pardons before he leaves office? Is that some kind of last-minute power play? 🤯 I'm not saying I agree or disagree with Trump on this one, just thinking it's weird...

🤔 This pardon decision just screams 'you can do whatever you want and get away with it' 🙅‍♂️. I mean, come on, Wanda Vázquez is guilty of accepting a campaign contribution that never materialized? It's like she thought the campaign was gonna deliver 💸, but instead, she got caught 🤦‍♀️. And now Trump's just gonna wave his magic wand and make everything disappear? Not cool, dude 🙅‍♂️.

I get it, Puerto Rican politicians are salty about this 🤯, but can't they just let it go? I mean, the guy who's leaving office is still a huge fan of Trump 🤪, so what does he care about justice or fairness? It's all about saving his skin and being a good buddy to Vázquez 👫. The last thing we need is more cronyism and corruption 🤑.

🤣[Image of a picture of Wanda Vázquez with a "Wanted" sign and a big X through it]

Trump's pardon machine is in full speed 🚀! Who needs integrity when you can just say "I'm the President, I'll make pardons happen"? 🙄[GIF of a snake shedding its skin]

Mark Rossini and Julio Martín Herrera Velutini, huh? Sounds like they're having a very bad day... and Trump's pardon is their ticket to "innocence" 🚫👮‍♂️[Image of a "Not Guilty" verdict with a big red X through it]

This pardon thingy... I get why some ppl are upset about it 🤔. On one hand, Vázquez did plead guilty and cooperate with investigators, so she's already shown accountability. But on the other hand, she's been charged with serious corruption stuff that affects the whole island. It feels like Trump is giving her a free pass just 'cause he wants to go out with a bang before leaving office. I'm not convinced it was the right call 🙅‍♂️.

I mean, what if this sets a precedent for other ppl in similar situations? Is Trump trying to send a message that corruption won't be punished? It's like he's trying to leave office with a legacy of "I pardoned Wanda" instead of "I kept the country safe and fair". Not sure I agree with that approach 😕.

this pardon thingy is gonna ruin puerto rico's rep 🤦‍♂️ what's next, a free pass for all the corrupt politicians who think they can get away with stuff? Vázquez's case was pretty clear cut - she pleaded guilty and now she's getting off scot-free... it's just not right 😒 i mean, i'm no fan of trump or his pardoning ways, but this one takes the cake 🍰. all those politicians who were all for her when she was on the down low are gonna have to answer to their constituents - they gotta live with this 💔

😒 this pardon thing is just so shady... i mean vázquez plead guilty and all, but still a year in jail seems way too harsh for her, especially considering what her friends are capable of 🤯 like, mark rossini and julio martín herrera velutini? those guys should be behind bars if anyone! and now trump is gonna set them free too? it's just so messed up...

the pardon for Vázquez just raises more questions 🤔...i mean, what's the real motive behind this move? is trump trying to burn some bridges with his base or make up for past favors? it's also interesting how hernández and other politicians are already condemning it as a sign of "impunity"... maybe they're just worried about being next in line for a pardon 💸. but at the end of the day, one has to wonder if trump really believes that a presidential pardon will somehow make Vázquez's questionable actions disappear into thin air 🔮...and what does this say about the state of justice and accountability in our country? 🤷‍♂️

man this pardon thing is just crazy 🤯 i mean wanda vázquez is guilty and everything but trump's gotta go all out with the pardon right? it's like he thinks she's gonna get away with everything or something. and the fact that puerto rico's politicians are all upset about it too... it's just another example of how corrupt politics can be in this country 🤕

i think what bothers me is not so much the pardon itself, but the message it sends to people who are already struggling under the weight of corruption and injustice. like, if trump really cares about justice then why's he giving a free pass to someone who broke the law? it just seems like more of the same old hypocrisy to me 🙄
