Trump's deployment of National Guard members to Chicago cost taxpayers $21 million, congressional report says

Federal Spending on National Guard Deployment Exceeds $496 Million in Trump-Era Cities

A recent Congressional Budget Office report has revealed that President Donald Trump's deployment of National Guard members to six major US cities cost taxpayers a staggering $496 million through the end of December 2025. The expenditure was primarily attributed to the deployment of approximately 375 Illinois National Guard members to Chicago, as well as another 200 Texas National Guard members sent to Illinois before returning to Texas.

The deployment, which began in October and lasted until January 21, incurred an initial $21 million cost for taxpayers. However, the report also notes that a significant portion of the total expenditure – approximately $4 million per month – is attributed to the remaining mobilized Texas National Guard members who are currently stationed on standby in Texas.

The Supreme Court's December ruling against Trump effectively blocked his efforts to deploy National Guard troops within Illinois until further notice. The decision was based on Trump's attempt to invoke a law requiring assistance from regular military forces, which was deemed insufficient by lower-court judges and the highest court.

The Congressional Budget Office report highlights the significant costs associated with these deployments, estimating that continuing them at their current size would cost $93 million per month. In other cities, such as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Memphis, Oregon, and Portland, the expenditures were significantly higher – ranging from $193 million to $26 million.

The lawmakers, who requested this report, have expressed their concerns over what they describe as an "abhorrent violation of the Constitution" and a "harmful diversion of federal resources." Senator Tammy Duckworth views the deployments as an "immense waste of taxpayer dollars," while Senator Dick Durbin labels them "harmful to our military's readiness, morale and resources."

omg did u guys know that avocados r getting super expensive now like i was at the store yesterday and they were like 15 bucks a pop last week they're like 20 now it's crazy 🤯 i swear i'm not made of money lol anyway back to this national guard thingy... isn't it weird how politicians are always trying to make things sound way more serious than they actually are? all that drama over a few million dollars and some folks gettin all upset about it 🙄

🚨💸 496 million dollars for Trump-era National Guard deployment is wild! 🤯 I mean, we're talkin' $4m per month for just 200 Texas guardsmen. That's like the entire budget of a small city! 🌆 And it's not even clear what the 'benefit' was for these deployments... was it really worth the cost? 🤑 The fact that Illinois got hit the hardest, with 375 guardsmen deployed and $193 million spent, is insane! 😲 What kinda planning goes into this stuff? 🤔 I mean, we should be investing in our communities, not blowing cash on troop deployments. 💸

🤯 So $496 million for National Guard deployment in 6 cities?! 🚨 That's crazy! 🤯 I mean, I'm all for keeping the streets safe, but come on! 😅 What else could we've spent that money on? 🤑 Like infrastructure development or something. 🚧 According to the Congressional Budget Office report, the estimated monthly cost if these deployments continue at their current size would be $93 million 💸 That's a lot of benjamins! 💳

Here are some fun stats:
- The deployment in Chicago alone cost taxpayers $21 million initially 🤑
- Oregon had the highest expenditure, with an estimated $193 million 💸
- Meanwhile, Portland only spent around $26 million 🤓 It's interesting to see how these numbers vary from city to city.
- We could've used that money for good things, like education or healthcare 🎓🏥

Anyway, it looks like lawmakers are speaking out against these deployments. Senator Tammy Duckworth and Senator Dick Durbin seem pretty concerned about the Constitution and federal resources 🤝

ugh $496 million? 🤯 thats crazy how much money was spent just on deployment... i mean i get it there are safety concerns but 4 mil a month? 😒 dont even get me started on the fact that supreme court had to step in lol what a mess... and those senator guys sound super annoyed 🙄 like they have a right to be tho, its a lot of cash

omg did you guys know that pineapple pizza is still a thing in some parts of the US? like what even is that? 🤯 i mean, personally i think pineapple on pizza is like eating a whole different flavor profile... but hey to each their own, right? anyway back to this national guard deployment stuff... $496 million is crazy! it's like, have we considered that money could be spent on something more productive than just putting guards in certain cities? 🤔

man I dont get why they keep deployin that many troops 2 these cities its crazy expensive like, $496 million? thats just nuts!! 🤑 and what r they even doin there?? Chicago had like 375 of them deployed for months? and texas got a bunch too? seems like alot of money 4 some kinda police action or somethin 😕. I mean i no the gov wants 2 keep those cities safe but c'mon can't we just use regular cops or sumthin? 🤔

omg can u believe this?? 🤯 $496 million just for Trumps stupid national guard deployments in chicago?! that's like, a fortune!!! and its not even like the guards are doing anything important or making us safer. they're just standing around causing unnecessary tension and wasting our tax dollars. i mean seriously who thought it was a good idea to send 375 guardsmen to one city for god knows how long? its like we're paying them to stand there looking patriotic 🤷‍♂️ and what really gets my goat is that the supreme court just told Trump no, you cant use the military for your own personal problems. like come on, dont be so entitled 🙄

OMG 🤯 can u believe this?! $496 million is a lot of money, like, what r they even gonna do with it? 🤑 the deployment thingy seems so unnecessary 2 me. i mean, who needs that much tax $$$ spent on Nat'l Guard troops in cities? 😒 and it's not just chicago or illinois either, its all these other cities too! 🤯 the lawmakers r super worried about this too, like what's next?! 🙄

omg can u believe the cost of deploying national guard members in chicago? like $496 million?! thats crazy! i dont get why they had to deploy them in the first place. cant they just resolve issues with community policing or something? 🤷‍♀️👮‍♂️ i mean, im all for keeping our cities safe, but come on, that much money? and now they're stuck waiting on a supreme court ruling... 🕰️😩

🤔 Like, can't believe how much money is being wasted on this 🤑. $496 million? That's just crazy talk! 😱 And it's not like the cities are even benefiting from it... 🙄 I mean, what's the point of deploying 375 Illinois National Guard members to Chicago when they're already there? 💤 It's like throwing good money after bad, you know? 🤑 The lawmakers are right to speak out against this - it's an abhorrent waste of taxpayer dollars 💸.

I'm not surprised that Trump-era spending on National Guard deployments is getting more scrutiny. $496 million is a wild figure! 🤑 But I gotta wonder, what exactly were these troops doing in Illinois and Texas? Were they really necessary? The fact that the Supreme Court had to intervene raises some serious questions about the motivation behind this deployment. And now lawmakers are calling it an "abhorrent violation of the Constitution"... that's not a slight, that's a full-on concern! 🙄 I mean, $93 million per month is still a pretty penny, but if it was really meant to address some critical issue, wouldn't there be more transparency about what's going on? The lack of clear explanation just makes me think there might be more to this story than we're being told.

🤦‍♂️ I mean, come on $496 million for Trump-era deployments? That's crazy! 🤑 I'm no expert, but it seems like the government is throwing money at problems without really solving them. 🤔 What's the real plan here? Are these deployments even addressing the underlying issues in these cities? 📍 It feels like we're just patching up symptoms instead of tackling the root causes. 😒 And $4 million a month for standby troops? That's just insane! 💸 Can't they just find ways to reduce costs without having to deploy so many people? 🤷‍♂️ I'm all for supporting our military, but let's get smart about how we're using our tax dollars. 💡

I'm not sure about this... I mean, $496 million is a lot, but it's also kinda not that much considering all the other spending we do on our National Guard 🤔. But at the same time, it does seem like a big waste of money if they're just deploying them for short periods and then sending them back home ⏱️. I don't know, maybe I'm just thinking about this from the wrong angle? The fact that Illinois cost more than Texas is kinda weird though... did we really need that much extra help in Chicago 🤷‍♀️?

omg, $496 million for national guard deployment? that's crazy! 🤯 i feel so bad for taxpayers who are having to foot the bill for this. it's like, what's the real purpose of deploying guards to these cities? is it just a PR stunt or something? 💸 anyway, gotta give props to senators duckworth and durbin for speaking out against this waste of resources. they're trying to hold our leaders accountable and that's what we need more of! 🙌

I'm so done with these secret deployments 🤯. Like, what's the real reason they're sending National Guard troops to cities across the US? Is it just a PR stunt or is there something more sinister going on? The fact that we're spending over $500 million already and it's still ongoing is just mind-boggling 💸. And now, these lawmakers are coming for them saying it's an "abhorrent violation of the Constitution"... I'm here for the transparency, guys! Can't we get some answers about what's really going on? 🤔

🤯 I mean, $496 million is wild! It's crazy how much money we're spending on some National Guard deployments that aren't even making a huge difference. I get it, cities need help with protests and riots, but can't we find cheaper solutions? 🤑 Like, have you seen the size of those crowds in LA lately? A few hundred troops ain't gonna cut it. We should be investing in community programs and stuff instead of throwing cash at this problem. And what's up with Trump trying to invoke some law that says regular military forces gotta help out? Sounds like a bunch of BS if you ask me 🤔

🤯 Like, can you believe $496 million? 🤑 That's a lot of benjamins! 💸 The deployment costs are crazy high, especially since most of the troops were already stationed in Texas. 🌳 And now they're getting paid by taxpayers while chillin' back home, which is just wild. 🤪 It's not like it was worth the cost, right? 🤑
