Oakham Man Killed in House Fire, Investigators Focus on Accidental Causes
A devastating house fire in Oakham has claimed the life of a 55-year-old man, identified as Ajay Batra. The tragic incident occurred at around 12:45 a.m., when neighbors reported heavy smoke and flames emanating from the residence.
According to local officials, investigators believe that accidental factors were behind the fatal blaze. They discovered a space heater in one of the second-floor bedrooms, where the fire is thought to have originated. Other possible ignition sources were also found in the area, which posed a challenge for firefighters as they attempted to search the damaged property.
The collapse of parts of the house made it difficult for investigators to examine the scene closely, prompting them to use drones to survey the debris. Fortunately, no signs of arson or intentional tampering with heating equipment have been detected, leaving officials to emphasize safety tips for home heating during winter months.
Oakham Fire Chief Timothy Howe cautioned that heating fires are particularly common during cold weather and warned residents about the dangers of combustible materials being too close to heating appliances. He also stressed the importance of using space heaters safely, such as plugging them directly into wall outlets and turning them off when not in use.
As firefighters worked to bring the blaze under control, frigid temperatures and icy conditions posed additional challenges. The emergency services team responded quickly to 911 calls from a neighbor, but the hazardous conditions prevented them from accessing the property immediately.
The Oakham Police Department, Worcester County District Attorney's Office, and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine have all issued statements to offer support to the family of the victim and assure the community that they are doing everything possible to determine the cause of the fire.
