Voter turnout on pace to reach historic high for NYC mayor’s race

New York City Sees Historic Voter Turnout in Mayor's Race, Breaking Record of '69

As the polls closed on Tuesday evening, New Yorkers flooded to the voting booths, shattering records and giving a glimpse into what could be one of the city's highest voter turnout rates for a mayoral election. The early signs are ominous: over 2 million voters have cast their ballots before the polls closed at 9 p.m., marking a level of participation not seen since 1969.

The surge in voting comes after an already impressive early-voting tally, with a staggering 735,000 New Yorkers casting their ballots ahead of Election Day. This is a far cry from the disappointing turnout witnessed in the 2021 mayoral race, where only 23% of active registered voters participated – roughly 1.15 million people.

The current momentum could potentially push the total turnout past 2.5 million voters, reminiscent of city elections from the 1960s, including a 1969 election that saw John Lindsay secure re-election with more than 2.46 million votes. That level of engagement has not been seen in any mayoral election since then.

The contrast between this year's turnout and previous mayoral races is striking. The 2021 election, marked by the contest between incumbent Eric Adams and challenger Curtis Sliwa, saw a dismal voter turnout, with only 23% of eligible voters casting their ballots. In comparison, the current election has witnessed unprecedented participation, reflecting the city's growing civic engagement.

While it remains to be seen whether this trend will continue as the polls close, the early signs suggest that New York City is witnessing a historic moment in its mayoral election process – one that could have lasting implications for the future of democracy in the city.

🚨🗳️ This voter turnout in NYC is crazy! 2 million+ people already voting before Tuesday and it's like they're trying to break some kind of record 📚💥 I mean, what's driving this? Is it the candidates? The issues? The fact that people are finally feeling heard? Whatever it is, let's hope it keeps going strong and we get a real representation of the city's will 💪🌆

idk why ppl r making such a big deal about voter turnout... 2 mil voters or whatever, it's still not that impressive 🤷‍♂️. like, we're living in an era where online shopping and streaming services are way more convenient than voting... shouldnt be that hard to get ppl to the polls? 💸

just saw this news about nyc voting turnout and i'm thinking what's going on here? 2 million ppl voting before polls even closed?? like, how did they organize this? 🤯 also super impressive compared to 2021 where it was only 23% of active voters. does anyone know if this is all because of the new voting system or changes in civic engagement? curious to see how this plays out

Ugh, I'm not buying all this sunshine and rainbows about the record-breaking voter turnout 🌞😒. I mean, think about it, 2 million people who voted early already? That's like, what, 20% of the total eligible voters? It's still a far cry from actual civic engagement. What's going on here is just some fancy marketing and social media manipulation to boost turnout 📊👀. And don't even get me started on the "growing civic engagement" nonsense... it sounds like just another PR stunt 🤥. Mark my words, this whole thing will blow over once the election is done, and we'll be back to square one 🙄.

🤯 2 mil voters already and it's not even done yet? That's crazy! 🤩 I'm loving this vibe, it feels like people are actually taking politics seriously again. What a contrast to 2021, that was super low key. 😐 The fact that people are so engaged is awesome, fingers crossed it keeps going strong until the end. 💪 Can't wait to see who comes out on top! 🎉

omg 2 million voters already 🤯 thats like 50% of new york city cant wait to see if they actually stick with this voter turnout or just a bunch of people voting out of habit 😂 anyhoo, glad to hear its not gonna be another 2021 mayoral disaster lol what's next? free pizza for all voters? 🍕👀
