With Precision and Playfulness, ‘La Fille du Regiment’ Considers Love, Loyalty and the Absurdities of War

La Fille du Regiment, Laurent Pelly's 2008 production of Gaetano Donizetti's opera, is a sidesplitting comedy about love, loyalty, and the absurdities of war. The show boasts a clever script, whimsical sets, and an exceptional cast that brings the story to life with infectious energy.

The plot revolves around Marie, a strong-willed young woman who defies convention by embracing her rugged side and rejecting traditional feminine norms. Her love for Tonio, a charming soldier, ignites a series of hilarious misadventures as they navigate their relationships amidst the chaos of war.

Peter Kálman shines as Marie's doting father Sulpice, bringing warmth and humor to his role with a running gag about forgetting the Marquise de Berkenfield's name. Erin Morley takes center stage as the feisty Marie, delivering a stunning vocal performance that showcases her impressive coloratura skills. Her comedic timing is impeccable, as she brings the house down with a karate-chop-filled laundry scene.

Lawrence Brownlee, as Tonio, is equally endearing, bringing his natural charm and charisma to the role. His chemistry with Morley is undeniable, making their romance a joy to watch.

The supporting cast is equally impressive, with Susan Graham delivering a deliciously over-the-top performance as the haughty Marquise de Berkenfield. Sandra Oh brings her signature wit and sass to the role of Duchess du Krakenthorp, providing some of the show's most memorable moments.

Director Laurent Pelly masterfully balances humor and heartache, creating a production that is both hilarious and touching. Giacomo Sagripanti conducts Donizetti with boundless energy, bringing out the opera's crisp wit and wit.

The Met Opera chorus delivers a thrilling performance, their stomp-and-dance routine in the final scene leaving the audience beaming with delight. With its winning combination of humor, music, and drama, La Fille du Regiment is an unforgettable night at the opera that will leave you smiling long after the curtain falls.

The cast is insane, Erin Morley's voice gives me goosebumps every time 👏. And Peter Kálman's antics as Sulpice are just too much 🤦‍♂️. I loved how the opera balanced humor and drama, it was like a big ol' hug for my heart ❤️. The Met Opera does it again! 🎉👏

Omg I just saw this production of La Fille du Regiment and I am DYING 💀🎵!!! Peter Kálman as Sulpice is a total scene stealer, his running gag about forgetting the Marquise's name had me LOLing 😂😂😂. And Erin Morley as Marie? WOW! She brings so much energy to the role, I was literally on my feet cheering her on 🤩. The chemistry between her and Lawrence Brownlee is undeniable, they're like two peas in a pod 💕👫. But what really got me was Susan Graham's performance as the Marquise de Berkenfield - she's just so extra 😂😂😂 it's amazing! Anyway, kudos to Laurent Pelly for bringing this hilarious and touching production to life 🎉.

I just saw this production of La Fille du Regiment and OMG it was SO funny! 🤣 I mean, who wouldn't laugh at a guy forgettin' his ex-wife's name for like 10 minutes straight? Peter Kálman is hilarious as Marie's dad Sulpice. And Erin Morley as Marie is just incredible, her vocals are insane but she's also got this crazy energy that makes you wanna jump up and dance along with her. 🤸‍♀️ Lawrence Brownlee as Tonio is so charming, I was rooting for those two from the get go. The whole cast is talented but Susan Graham's performance as the Marquise de Berkenfield had me dyin' over here 😂. And that finale with the chorus? Give me all the sass and stompin' 🤩 it's a total feel-good opera experience. I'm so glad they're still performin' this show, it's like a breath of fresh air after all those intense operas

I just saw the most AMAZING production of La Fille du Regiment at the Met Opera!!! 🤣🎭 It's a total LAUGH RIOT, but also has a lot of HEART! The cast is SO talented, I loved how Erin Morley and Lawrence Brownlee played off each other as Marie and Tonio - they're just MEANT to be together! 😍 And Peter Kálman as Sulpice is just the BEST, his running gag about forgetting the Marquise's name had me DYING 🤣. The sets are also SO clever, I loved how whimsical everything was. And the chorus at the end is just pure JOY 🎉! I'm still grinning from ear to ear and can't wait to see what else they do next!!! 😆

🤩 I just watched La Fille du Regiment and OMG, it's a total laugh fest! 😂 The sets are so whimsical and the cast is absolutely amazing! Peter Kálman as Marie's dad is giving me LIFE 🤣 his running gag had me dying of laughter. Erin Morley as Marie is stunning, her vocals are insane and she's got some serious comedic chops too. Lawrence Brownlee as Tonio is so charming, I'm shipping them hard 💕. And can we talk about Susan Graham as the Marquise de Berkenfield? She's giving me all the sass and drama 🤣 this show has everything - music, comedy, heartache... it's a perfect combo! 👏

Wow 🤣 this show sounds like so much fun! Interesting how they can make war a comedy, I'm intrigued by the karate-chop-filled laundry scene 😂 and the running gag about forgetting names is genius! I love how the cast brings their A-game, Erin Morley's vocals are insane 💥 and Sandra Oh's sass is on point 🙌. The way they balance humor and heartache sounds like a winning formula for me, let's go see it! 😄

I'm so over this latest production of La Fille du Regiment 🙄 it's just another cheesy rom-com with a bunch of melodramatic singing. I mean, come on, who writes an opera about a chick who does karate to do laundry? 😂 The sets are all clunky and the acting is super forced. Peter Kálman's running gag gets old after like 2 minutes 🙃 and Erin Morley's vocals are okay but not that impressive. Lawrence Brownlee is just phoning it in as Tonio... where's his charisma? 🤔 The supporting cast is just a bunch of caricatures, Susan Graham's over-the-top performance is more cringeworthy than hilarious 😳. And don't even get me started on the Met Opera chorus, those choreographed dance moves are so awkward 💃. Overall, I'd say this production is just another forgettable opera that tries too hard to be funny 🙅‍♀️

just watched this opa on youtube and omg it's so funny 🤣 i mean Marie's dad forgetting everyone's name is like every1s dad 😂 erin morley's vocals tho are insane 🎶 i wish they did a live stream of this thing tho would've loved to see the stomp-and-dance routine in person 🙌 [

Umm, I think this show is super overrated 🤣. I mean, the whole "strong-willed young woman defying convention" thing sounds like every other 'tough girl' movie ever made. And don't even get me started on how predictable it is - we all know the "feisty heroine" trope has been done to death 💁‍♀️. Plus, the whole opera thing can be a bit much for some people 🎶. I was expecting something way more nuanced and clever from Laurent Pelly... but I guess that's just not my cup of tea ☕️.

I'm so down for La Fille du Regiment this season! I love how it's a fun twist on traditional war stories 🤣♀️. Erin Morley and Lawrence Brownlee have amazing chemistry, and Peter Kálman is just too funny as Marie's dad 💁‍♀️. The sets and costumes look super cool too, all whimsical and war-time-y 🎨. I've heard great things about the chorus too, they always bring so much energy to the shows 💖. Can't wait to see it live! 👏

OMG 🤣 I just saw this La Fille du Regiment production at the Met Opera and it was SOOO funny 🤦‍♀️! The cast is literally on fire 🔥, especially Erin Morley as Marie, her vocals are insane 🎶 and she's got some serious comedic skills 😂. Peter Kálman as Sulpice is also hilarious, his running gag about the Marquise de Berkenfield's name had me dying 😂👏. The sets and script are so clever, it's like you're watching a witty rom-com 📺 but with opera! I loved how the show balanced humor and heartache, it was both laugh-out-loud funny and had me feeling all the feels ❤️. Can't wait to see what else Laurent Pelly and the Met Opera have in store for us! 🎭👏

🤣 I mean, have you seen this production? It's like a masterclass in comedy and drama all rolled into one! The way they balance humor with heartache is pure magic 🧙‍♀️. And can we talk about the cast? Erin Morley as Marie is absolute perfection – her voice is insane 🔥 and she's got comedic timing that'll have you dying laughing 😂. Peter Kálman as Sulpice is just pure gold 💃, and Lawrence Brownlee as Tonio is so charming it's hard not to get caught up in their romance ❤️. And let's not forget the supporting cast – Susan Graham's Marquise de Berkenfield is just ridiculous 🤣 in the best possible way! The Met Opera chorus delivers an amazing finale that'll leave you grinning from ear to ear 😄. I think what really makes this production shine, though, is its commitment to bringing a little bit of levity to an opera that could otherwise be stuffy and serious. It's just a feel-good show from start to finish 🌞

omg u guys i just saw la fille du regiment at the met and it was literally the most hilarious thing i've seen all year 🤣💖 erin morley's vocals were insane and peter kálman as her dad was killing me with his running gag lol 😂 and lawrence brownlee as tonio is just so cute 🙋‍♂️ but what really got me was the marquise de berkenfield's character, susan graham was perfection 💁‍♀️ i mean who else can make a scene about not knowing someone's name into a comedy goldmine? 😂
