Chris Gotterup stunned the golfing world at the WM Phoenix Open after emerging victorious in a thrilling play-off against Hideki Matsuyama.
The Danish golfer, who had won previously in Hawaii earlier this year, produced an incredible 64 to propel himself into contention, with five birdies in the final six holes catapulting him to a total of 16 under par. His closest rival, Matsuyama, was left in his wake as he failed to capitalize on a putt on the 18th hole to seal the win.
Gotterup's stunning victory came after Matsuyama had an opportunity to take control, only for it to slip away from him. Gotterup seized the moment, sinking a lengthy putt to card a birdie and secure the championship in style.
"It didn't even cross my mind until now," Gotterup beamed, as he celebrated his third win of the season with loved ones watching on. "I really have no idea what's going on. I'm just having such an amazing time playing right now."
Despite missing out on the top spot, Scottie Scheffler was still a force to be reckoned with, carding a remarkable 64 in his final round to finish third in the standings.
"I put myself in a tough position after the first round, but three really solid days," Scheffler reflected. "Today was another really good round. I'm going to fall a few shots short it looks like, but overall proud of the fight this week and did some good stuff."
Fellow Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick rounded off his tournament in ninth place, finishing with three birdies in his final five holes.
