X is also launching Bluesky-like starter packs

X, a social media platform with a growing user base, is set to roll out "Starterpacks" - a feature that allows new users to curate their own personalized compilations of accounts based on their interests. The move comes on the heels of similar features launched by other platforms, including Bluesky's popular tool.

In a recent announcement, X's head of product, Nikita Bier, revealed that his team scoured the globe to identify top posters in various niches and countries, before compiling them into curated lists. According to Bier, the goal is to provide new users with a starting point for discovering high-quality accounts across different areas of interest.

The new feature is notable not only for its similarity to Bluesky's "starter packs", but also for how it differs in terms of user agency. While Bluesky allows ordinary users to create and share their own lists, X takes a more hands-on approach, compiling pre-curated collections that are tailored to specific interests.

This isn't the first social media platform to launch its own take on the "starter packs" feature - Threads, which rolled out in late 2024, offers similar recommendations in users' feeds, while Mastodon introduced its version earlier this year. However, X's implementation is notable for its focus on user discovery and curation, providing a fresh spin on the concept.

I think X is trying to be different but honestly it sounds like they're just copying others 🤔. I mean, who needs personalized recommendations when you can have curated lists of accounts that might not even be super relevant? Don't get me wrong, I love a good discovery feed as much as the next person, but this just feels like another way for them to try and keep users engaged without actually giving us any real control over what we see. Plus, it's just so... curated 😒. Can't we just have a feed that shows up whatever we want? 🤷‍♀️

Ugh, great, another social media platform trying to milk us dry with "curated" content 🤯... I mean, who even needs these "starter packs" when you can just browse through all the noise yourself? It's like they think we're too lazy or too clueless to figure out what's good on our own. And what's up with Nikita Bier and his team scouring the globe for top posters? Sounds like a bunch of marketing speak to me... "high-quality accounts" = corporate propaganda 🤷‍♂️. Can't wait to see how they're going to monetize this feature, I'm sure it'll be a subscription-based thing or a treasure trove of ads 🤑...

so i think x's starterpacks thingy is actually kinda cool 🤔. it's like they're trying to make social media more discoverable, you know? instead of just seeing what your friends are posting, you can explore new accounts that are all about a specific topic. and the fact that they scoured the globe for top posters is pretty neat too 💡. but at the same time, i'm not sure if it's entirely user-friendly... like, do we really want some algorithm deciding which accounts to include in our starterpacks? 🤷‍♀️ still, it'll be interesting to see how users respond to it 👀

I think its kinda cool that x is trying something new with starterpacks 🤔...i mean, who doesnt love getting personalized recs of accounts they might like? but at the same time, i'm curious about how this'll play out in practice... will users just click on whatever's been handpicked for them or try to make their own lists too? and what's the point of having starterpacks if x isnt gonna let users customize 'em much? 🤷‍♀️ also, i wonder if they're gonna monetize this feature somehow...

🤔 I think this is a classic case of 'platform creep'. One platform tries to outdo another by copying their idea, but in doing so, are they really innovating or just playing catch-up? 📈 X's approach seems like a safe bet for new users, but I wonder if it stifles user agency and creativity. I mean, where's the fun in having curated starter packs when you can't even create your own? 🤷‍♂️ It's almost like they're trying to control the narrative instead of letting users take ownership of their online experiences. 💻 The question is, will this be seen as a positive move or a step back for user autonomy? 📊

ugh what's with all these new features 🤯 i'm still trying to figure out how to use x without getting lost in endless scroll feed... but i guess starterpacks could be cool if it helps me find new accounts that actually interest me 📚💻 anyone know how to create a starterpack tho?

idk why ppl need starter packs on social media like thats gonna help them discover new accounts lol 🤔. i mean whats wrong with just searching for hashtags or following people who seem cool? x is trying to be all "oh we've got u covered" but really its just another way to feed us algorithmic content that might not even match our interests. and whats the point of pre-curated lists when anyone can already create their own playlists on spotify? 🎶 i'm all for innovation, but sometimes less is more, right?

🤔 I think what's really interesting here is how this feature highlights the importance of community and curation in social media. It's not just about giving users a bunch of random accounts to follow, but actually curating a selection that can help people discover new content and connect with like-minded individuals.

It got me thinking, what if we applied this same principle to our own lives? We don't always have the time or resources to seek out every single piece of information on a topic that interests us. But by finding trusted sources and experts in our niche, we can create our own personalized learning paths and connect with others who share similar passions.

It's all about having a good 'starter pack' of people and resources to turn to when we're just starting out or looking for inspiration 📚💡

I'm not sure about these curated lists on social media platforms 🤔. I mean, shouldn't we be discovering new accounts organically, you know? Like, stumble upon someone who's just posting fire content and follow them because it's actually good 😅. Not because some algorithm says "Hey, you're into this thing, check out our handpicked list of people who are also into that thing".

I'm all for user discovery, but let's not forget that algorithms can be super misleading 🤖. What if these curated lists just end up showing us people we already follow or accounts we've seen before? Where's the surprise factor in that? And what about when you want to explore something new outside of those curated lists? Do you get lost in a sea of recommendations trying to find something authentic?

I'm not saying X's Starterpacks aren't cool and all, but let's keep things in perspective 🤓. Maybe I'll give it a try, see how it goes 🚀

omg i'm so hyped about x's starterpacks!!! 🤩 like how they took the idea from bluesky but put their own twist with it, giving us users actual curated content to discover new faves 📸❤️ its all about creating a community vibe, right? and i love that nikita bier said they scoured the globe for top posters, that's so cool! 🌎💻 now i just wanna dive into all these starterpacks and find my own fave accounts to follow 🤗👍 x is really stepping up their game this year

I don’t usually comment but I think it’s kinda cool that they’re trying to make discovery easier for new users 😊. I mean, who doesn’t love finding new accounts to follow? But at the same time, I wonder if it's too curated? Like, what if you're into, say, anime and manga, but they only curate accounts from Japan 🤔? Would be awesome if X could incorporate more global perspectives 💡. And also, how much do these "starterpacks" cost, like, will there be a premium option or something? Want to know more about it! 👀
