Supermarché sweep: the treats we love to buy on holiday in Europe

When traveling abroad, many of us have a weakness for local treats that can't be replicated back home. In Europe, this shopping obsession is taken to new heights. From Belgian mustards and French jam to Italian sweets and German bread, the aromas and tastes are an integral part of what makes traveling special.

In Belgium, cycling enthusiasts can't get enough of Meli honey waffles and cake, which have become a staple in the country's supermarkets. For those with a sweet tooth, there's no better place than the 19th-century mustard shop on Ghent's Groentenmarkt, where wooden vats create a soothing aroma that will leave you wanting more. And for coffee lovers, Mokabon's home-roasted beans are a must-try.

Meanwhile, in France, the middle aisle of supermarkets is an art form, with perfectly aligned labels facing forward and enticing customers to linger. The Bonne Maman jam section offers Gallic flavors such as mirabelle intense, coings (quince), figues violettes (fig) and reines-claudes (greengage). Cheese enthusiasts will be spoiled for choice, with countless varieties from Normandy, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Bourgogne-Franche-Comté.

In Italy, a country that loves its sweets, the supermarket experience is an Aladdin's cave of candies. Fruit jellies are a particular favorite among tourists, who can buy huge bags to take home. No trip to Italy would be complete without several boxes of Baci chocolates, with their nutty filling and hazelnut-topped dark chocolate. And for those looking to stock up on groceries, olive oil, pasta and balsamic vinegar are must-haves.

For Irish expats on a trip home or international tourists visiting the Emerald Isle, stocking up on Barry's tea and Tayto crisps is almost mandatory. However, there's more to Ireland than these two staples – from farmhouse cheeses like Gubbeen and Durrus to Boyne Valley Bán, a magnificent hard goat's cheese that's worth tracking down.

In Germany, in-store bakeries are a treat for those who miss the country's freshly baked bread rolls, such as Brötchen with cream cheese or meat. The regionally-inspired deli counters offer a taste of Bavaria, northern Germany and Hamburg, each with its own unique flavors. And from Ritter Sport chocolate to Katjes gummy bears, there's no shortage of sweet treats to take home.

Lastly, for those who value sustainability, the German deposit system is a game-changer – returning plastic bottles and cans to the supermarket and getting up to 25 cents back is an environmentally-friendly habit worth adopting. Whether it's Belgian mustards, French jam or German bread, Europe has something special when it comes to local treats that will leave you wanting more.

You guys I just got back from Europe with my family and OMG we are still eating those Belgian waffles 🤩! Like for real the honey is LIFE.CHANGING. And can we talk about how much we bought in Germany? 25 cents back on our plastic bottles is a total game changer 🌎💚. My kids are totally hooked on Ritter Sport chocolate and I am so here for it 😂. We also got some amazing Irish cheese like Gubbeen that's literally the best thing since sliced bread 🧀. But honestly, what we loved most was how relaxed we felt trying all these local treats. No judgments at supermarkets just pure foodie heaven 🌴.

OMG, have you tried those Belgian meli honey waffles yet 🤯?! They're literally the best thing since sliced bread! I mean, who wouldn't want a crispy waffle filled with sticky, golden syrupy goodness? And don't even get me started on that 19th-century mustard shop in Ghent... I'm totally down for a taste of those wooden vats creating this amazing aroma 💡. On the other hand, France is all about luxury vibes – I mean, have you seen those perfectly aligned labels on the supermarket shelves? 😂 It's like they're trying to give us a taste of their high-end lifestyle. But let's be real, it's not just about the fancy labels... those Bonne Maman jams are pure gold! 💛

Europe is literally a haven for foodies! 🤤 I'm obsessed with trying new local goodies while traveling. From Belgian waffles to French jam, Italian sweets and German bread, every country has its own unique flavors and aromas that make the experience so special. The way they showcase their products in stores is also super cool - perfect labels and displays that make you just want to linger. 🛍️ I'm a sucker for trying unique snacks like Mokabon's coffee beans and Ritter Sport chocolate. And have you tried those Irish biscuits? Barry's tea and Tayto crisps are must-haves in my book! 😂 But what really impresses me is Germany's deposit system - it's so eco-friendly and makes a real difference. 🌎

omg u guys i just read about this and its literally making me wanna take a trip to europe ASAP 🛫🍽️! belgian meli honey waffles cake are on my list already, cant wait to try mokabon's coffee beans too ☕️. france is like the ultimate jam heaven, bonne maman has so many flavors i need to try them all 🤯. italian sweets r my fave too, baci chocolates are my weakness ❤️. german bread rolls are a must have for me too, especially with cream cheese or meat 🍞. the german deposit system is so cool too, im def gonna start using it 💚

🍞️ Europe's got a sweet spot for local treats & I'm all about trying new stuff when I travel! 🤗 But let's be real, sometimes the packaging can be a total waste... all those unnecessary labels and wrappers can add up 📦💔. We should aim to buy in bulk or bring our own containers next time 🛍️👀.

omg u guys r gonna LOVE this!!! 😍 europe is like the ultimate destination for foodies!!! i mean, who needs replica brands when u can get the REAL DEAL 🤯 from belgian meli honey waffles to french bonne maman jam, italian baci chocolates and german katjes gummy bears... my sweet tooth is already watering just thinking about it 😋 and let's not forget about the supermarkets in europe - like, have u seen the labels in france? perfectly aligned and all that jazz 💁‍♀️ and don't even get me started on the german deposit system 📦💚 it's like, a game-changer for sustainability!!! anyway, if u haven't already, u need to start planning ur next europe trip ASAP - ur taste buds (and wallet) will thank u 😂🛍️

EUROPEAN FOOD IS JUST THE BEST!!! I MEAN, WHO NEEDS TO RECREATE THOSE LOCAL TREATS WHEN YOU CAN JUST BUY THEM IN THE COUNTRY WHERE THEY'RE MADE???? I'M ALL ABOUT THAT EUROPEAN SHOPPING EXPERIENCE!!! 🛍️🇪🇺
AND OMG, BELGIAN MELI HONEY WAFFLES AND CAKE?!?! THAT SOUNDS LIKE A DREAM COME TRUE FOR ANY CYCLING ENTHUSIAST OR COFFEE LOVER! 🚴‍♂️☕
AND HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF BOUNE MAMAN JAM? IT'S LIKE A TASTE EXPLOSION IN YOUR MOUTH!!! AND THE FRANCE CHEESE SELECTION IS JUST SPECTACULAR!!! 🧀🇫🇷

I'm so done with foodies thinking they can just waltz into any country and expect to find the exact same stuff they're used to at home 🤯. Like, have you even tried to get a decent baguette in the US? It's all about the experience, people! The smell of fresh bread wafting through a German bakery is one thing, but it's not the same as having a taste of that same bread in Paris or Rome 👀.

And don't even get me started on the hype around Meli honey waffles 🍓. It's just honey and waffles, guys! You can make that at home for half the price 💸. I'm all for trying new things, but when it comes to foodie obsession, let's take a step back and be realistic 🤷‍♀️.

What do you guys think? Am I just being too cynical about the whole foodie phenomenon? 😐

I'm totally obsessed with trying all these yummy foods while traveling abroad 🤗. But have you ever wondered why food shopping becomes such a big deal for us tourists? Is it because we just love the novelty of experiencing new flavors and textures, or is there something more to it? Like, do local treats really taste better in person, or can they be replicated at home?

And what's up with all these regional specialties, anyway? Why do certain areas have their own unique must-try foods? Is it because of history, culture, or just personal preference?

I also noticed that many European countries have an amazing supermarket experience 🛍️. Like, have you ever walked into a French supermarket and been like "wow, everything is so organized and pretty"? I mean, what's their secret?

Oh, and one more thing: how do you choose the best local treats when you're traveling? Do you ask locals for recommendations, or just wing it and hope for the best?

Europe has some amazing local treats, don't they? 🍽️ I've been lucky enough to try a few of them myself, and let me tell you, there's nothing like having that authentic taste of somewhere you're visiting.

I think what really makes Europe special is the attention to detail when it comes to food shopping. From the beautifully laid out cheese counters in France to the delightful aroma of Belgian Meli honey waffles, every little thing seems to be designed to make your taste buds do the happy dance 😊.

And I have to say, I'm a big fan of the supermarket culture in Germany. Who wouldn't want to buy their own stash of Ritter Sport chocolate and Katjes gummy bears? 🍫👌 It's like they're saying, "Hey, we know you're going to be thinking about us soon enough, so why not stock up for later?" 😉

Anyway, if I had to pick one thing that really gets me excited about European food shopping, it would be the idea of sustainability. The deposit system in Germany is a game-changer – who wouldn't want to get some cash back for returning their plastic bottles? 🤑 It's just common sense, right?

All in all, I think Europe has some amazing local treats that are definitely worth trying out. And with so much attention to detail and a focus on sustainability, you can be sure that you're getting the authentic experience every time 😊

I think it's really cool how each country in Europe has its own unique food scene when it comes to shopping for treats while traveling. I mean, who wouldn't want to try some Belgian Meli honey waffles or French Bonne Maman jam? 🍞👌 It's all about immersing yourself in the local culture and taking home some goodies as a memento.

I also love how Germany has this awesome deposit system for plastic bottles and cans, it's like they're promoting sustainability without even making an effort to shout about it. And can we talk about Italy's Aladdin's cave of candies? 🍬🤩 I mean, who wouldn't want to stock up on huge bags of fruit jellies or boxes of Baci chocolates?

What I think is most interesting is how these little things make traveling so special. It's not just about seeing the sights and trying new foods (although that's a big part of it), but also about taking home some memories and experiencing the local way of life. 🌍👫

omg u r right europe does have the best snacks 🤩 i went to france last year and tried the bonne maman jam for the first time and it was love at 1st sight ❤️ their cheese selection tho is insane 🧀 anyone else know about boyne valley bán cheese?

🌿 Europe is literally my happy place! I mean, have you tried those Belgian waffles with meli honey? Mind blown! 🤯 And the French jam selection at Bonne Maman is like a party in your mouth 🎉. Italy's got its own magic too, from the fruit jellies to the Baci chocolates - I could eat them all day 😋.

But what really gets me excited is how Europe prioritizes sustainability 🌟. The German deposit system is genius! Who needs more plastic bottles when you can get paid for returning them? 💸 It's like, we should be doing this everywhere, not just in Europe 🤔.

And can we talk about the foodie culture here? From Irish Barry's tea to German Ritter Sport chocolate, there's just so much deliciousness to explore. But it's not just about the treats - it's about the experience of discovering new flavors and traditions 🎉.

omg u guys i just got back from europe 🤗 and i'm literally swooning over all the food they have there!! i mean have u ever tried meli honey waffles in belgium?? 🍞😋 they're like, totally divine!!! and don't even get me started on the french jam section at supermarkets - it's like a taste explosion in ur mouth! 💄🍰

and can we talk about the italian sweets? 🍫♀️ i'm obsessed with baci chocolates and fruit jellies, u guys know which ones i mean 🤣. but what really got me was when i went to germany and saw those adorable little bakeries in stores - brötchen with cream cheese is literally my new fave snack 😋👌

anyway, europe has seriously spoiled us on food and now we're all just like "um, where can i get that??" 🤔🍴 and btw have u tried those german deposit systems? it's so cool how they recycle plastic bottles and cans back to ur wallet 💸📦
